Tragedy on tracks: Cricketer dies in pain on train; teammates say 'emergency calls ignored'

A devastating incident occurred aboard the Chhattisgarh Express when a 38-year-old disabled cricketer,

from Punjab, reportedly passed away while travelling from Delhi to Gwalior for a wheelchair cricket tournament.
Singh's health suddenly deteriorated during the journey, and despite numerous emergency calls, medical assistance failed to arrive in time.
He passed away before the train reached Mathura station, despite repeated efforts to secure help.

Singh and his teammates had boarded the Chhattisgarh Express from Hazrat Nizamuddin station on Wednesday night. He began experiencing severe pain shortly after departure, and his condition worsened rapidly as the train approached Mathura.
According to reports, an emergency call was made to the railway helpline at 4:58 am, urgently requesting medical support. Despite several follow-up calls, no help materialised.
The train was delayed by approximately 90 minutes and eventually reached Mathura station at 8:10 am. By then, Singh had already passed away.
'He was in pain in front of our eyes. We kept calling for help, but it never came,' recounted one of his distraught teammates.

At Mathura Junction, Government Railway Police (GRP) officials removed Singh's body and arranged for a postmortem. The GRP has initiated formal proceedings, while railway authorities have launched an internal investigation into the delayed response.
The incident has brought to light serious concerns about the effectiveness of

' emergency medical systems.
'This is not just a tragedy but a glaring reminder of the gaps in our railway medical emergency response,' said a senior player who was travelling with Vikram.
The tragedy has prompted widespread outrage from disability rights advocates and the sporting community, who are questioning Indian Railways' ability to adequately support differently-abled passengers in emergency situations—especially when timely intervention is critical.

With two new cases surfacing on Friday, the Covid tally has climbed to 18 in the district. A 22-year-old man and a 50-year-old woman were tested positive on Friday. While the man is reported to be asymptomatic, the woman has been reported to be mildly symptomatic. At present, there are 13 active cases in the district as three have recovered and two persons have died of the infection. Both deaths include co-morbid patients. The first death was reported last Wednesday. The 40-year-old man was suffering from a lung ailment before contracting Covid. The latest death was reported on Wednesday which was of a 59-year-old woman suffering from typhoid for the last five months. She was also reportedly obese, according to health officials. Both deceased were admitted to the Government Medical College and Hospital in Chandigarh. Besides the woman found positive on Friday, all other active cases, as per health officials, are asymptomatic. According to a senior local health official, requesting anonymity, apart from an 18-year-old, all other cases include people who have already been vaccinated for Covid. The department advised the public to continue using masks in crowded areas and consult the doctor if they have any flu-like symptoms. Punjab health minister Dr Balbir Singh, who was in the district to hold a meeting of health officials and a few NGOs, said there was no reason to worry. 'The situation is normal. Punjab is fully equipped to tackle any situation,' he said. The minister also advised immune compromised individuals, such as pregnant women, elderly and those with conditions like kidney disease, high BP, cancer or respiratory issues to wear masks when stepping outside as a precautionary measure. He underscored the importance of vigilance while affirming the state's preparedness to handle any health challenges. De-addiction-cum-skill centre to come up in Mullanpur Ludhiana: Punjab health minister Dr Balbir Singh here on Friday that a centre of excellence for drug de-addiction and skill development was being established in Mullanpur here in collaboration with NGOs. Holding a meeting with members of over 35 NGOs, Dr Balbir Singh said that apart from saving the addicts from drug abuse, the centre would also help them in developing skills which would allow them to have a better livelihood. He said the aim of holding a meeting with the NGOs was to improve coordination and to get feedback from the members. Dr Singh stated that the centre in Mullanpur is being established in collaboration with Helpful NGO and a number of other NGOs have also stepped forward. The minster also stressed upon 'Har Shukarwar Dengue Te Vaar' campaign wherein residents are being sensitised regarding cleaning and drying desert coolers, flowerpots, water containers, fridge trays, tank water and water storage containers, etc., every Friday to prevent mosquito breeding. The minister highlighted the state-wide efforts under the campaign, noting that 20,000 ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activist) workers are actively inspecting homes across Punjab every Friday.

Caregiver support scheme likely for those with benchmark disabilities
New Delhi: To help persons with benchmark disabilities having serious mobility issues, Delhi govt is working on a proposal to provide them with financial assistance to avail themselves of the services of caregivers. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Delhi social welfare minister Ravindra Indraj Singh told TOI that his department was working on a scheme and would soon bring a proposal before the council of ministers for its approval. "The project was discussed in the cabinet once. We will finalise the proposal soon and place it before the council of ministers again for approval," Singh said. The minister added the kin of persons with a benchmark disability of 80% or more would be provided with financial assistance, benefitting nearly 1,000 families. The department will soon conduct a survey on the number of people who will get the aid. Though the exact amount of the aid was yet to be finalised, the minister said, it could be around Rs 5,000. Delhi govt currently provides a monthly pension of Rs 2,500 to the disabled, but this amount is often too little for people from disadvantaged sections. Persons with benchmark disabilities are those who have not less than 40% of a specified disability, as per the disability certificate or the UDID card. There are 21 disabilities categorised, including locomotor disability, intellectual disability, mental illness, autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, among others.

Disabled cricketer dies on Chhattisgarh-bound train in UP, Railways orders probe
A 38-year-old cricketer with disability died on the Korba-bound Chhattisgarh Express he had boarded to go to Gwalior, railway officials said on reportedly complained of a severe headache and anxiety shortly after the train left a station from Delhi. He had left for Gwalior from Ludhiana to participate in a cricket tournament, and was travelling in the Divyangjan coach with five other team Srivastava, PRO of the Agra Division of North Central Railway, said some fellow passengers called for medical assistance when Vikram's condition deteriorated. The call, initially connected to the Bilaspur division, was subsequently forwarded to the Delhi division. However, by the time the information was relayed, the train had already crossed Ballabgarh station."It was conveyed to his fellow passengers that medical facilities would be available at Mathura Junction, as Railway doctors are available at major stations," Srivastava said that no further request had been made by the passengers regarding the urgency of the situation."Had we been told the condition was so serious, we could have thought of alternate arrangements or could have taken civil administration's help," the PRO train made a stop at Ajhai Station, approximately 21 km from Mathura Junction, where a guard gave first aid to the ailing cricketer and informed railway the time the train reached Mathura Junction station, Vikram was dead, and was so declared by the railway Railways have ordered an inquiry into the incident, said the PRO.
