School IT worker took 'upskirting' photos
A man took photos up the skirts of female victims in the secondary school where he worked as an IT technician, a court has heard.
Lewis Lawson-Brett, 22, was caught on CCTV following several victims up staircases when they were walking alone at St Bede's and St Joseph's Catholic College in Bradford, before "upskirting" them with his phone.
After he was arrested in May 2024, police found around 1,000 indecent images of children on his phone, Bradford Crown Court was told.
Lawson-Brett, who had previously admitted three charges of voyeurism, three charges relating to indecent images and one count of possessing an extreme pornographic image, was sentenced to a 36-month community order.
Prosecutor Lydia Pearce told the court the defendant started working at the Bradford school in early 2024 as part of an apprenticeship programme.
His duties included fixing computers, printers and improving the school's CCTV systems.
It was said that in May 2024, concerns about Lawson-Brett's behaviour were raised and staff then observed him on camera upskirting several females, all of whom it was said were oblivious to what he was doing.
The court was told a decision had been taken not to tell Lawson-Brett's victims what he had done and they remain unaware they were targeted.
In testimony read out in court, the defendant's line manager said he had "abused the trust" of those at the school.
Mitigating, Jayne Beckett said Lawson-Brett, who had no previous convictions, felt "ashamed" and "disgusted" by his own behaviour.
It was said that while he was keen to take responsibility for his actions, he had denied they were sexually motivated.
Lawson-Brett, of Church Street in Cullingworth, appeared in court from HMP Leeds, where he had been held on remand for 11 months.
Judge Kirstie Watson said that she had initially intended to sentence Lawson-Brett to more time in prison, but decided his rehabilitation would be better served out of jail.
As part of his community order, the defendant was told he would have to attend a sexual awareness programme and complete 50 hours of unpaid work.
He was also made the subject of a sexual harm prevention order.
Addressing him directly, Judge Watson said: "I make it absolutely clear to you that this is a direct alternative to custody.
"If you break any part of this order, or if you break the sexual harm prevention order in the terms set out, you will be back in this court and you will go back to custody for a longer period of time."

Blackmail arrest in Bradford murder inquiry
A 17-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of blackmail by officers investigating the fatal stabbing of a man in Bradford. Murder suspects remanded in custody accused of killing boy, 16
Two men charged with murdering a 16-year-old pedestrian in a hit-and-run and three counts of attempted murder have appeared in court. Zulkernain Ahmed, 20, and Armaan Ahmed, 26, were not asked to enter any pleas when they were remanded in custody at Sheffield Magistrates' Court accused of killing Abdullah Yaser Abdullah Al Yazidi. The teenager was walking along Staniforth Road in the Darnall area of Sheffield last Wednesday when he was hit by an Audi car and suffered fatal injuries. Police said officers understood that the Audi had driven towards three electric bikes, colliding with one rider, an 18-year-old man who suffered serious but non life-threatening injuries. District Judge James Gould was told that the two defendants are both charged with the same offences, all alleged to have been committed on Wednesday June 4. The judge told Ahmed and Ahmed, who appeared alongside each other in the glass-fronted dock: 'The next hearing in your case in respect of all of these charges is the 10th of June at the crown court in Sheffield. 'You have no right to apply for bail at this stage and accordingly you are remanded in custody and you will appear tomorrow at the Crown Court.' During the three-minute hearing on Monday, the men, both of Locke Drive, Darnall, spoke only to give their names, dates of birth and address. Details of the attempted murder charges were not read to the defendants, who were both represented by the same defence lawyer. Relatives of Abdullah said last week that he had recently arrived in the UK from Yemen 'for a better future' and was devoted to his family. He arrived in the UK two or three months ago, and was enjoying learning English ahead of starting at college in September. Abdullah's relative Saleh Alsirkal said: 'His dad brought him over to change his life, to get a better future for his son, but this has happened and destroyed everything.' Mr Alsirkal added that Abdullah was a 'kind boy' who just wanted to look after his family, including his three sisters. Two people, a man aged 46 and a 45-year-old woman, arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender, have both been bailed pending further inquiries, police said.

Cat owner horrified after pet 'shaved in attack'
A cat owner has been left shocked after her beloved pet returned home with missing fur, which is believed to have been shaved. Jacqui Field, who lives in Gosberton, near Spalding in Lincolnshire, said she found her cat, Bertie, was missing a "big lump of fur from his side" on 7 May. Mrs Field said: "I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Someone must have held him down to do it and it's just a horrible, horrible feeling. It's disgraceful." Lincolnshire Police said it would encourage anyone who is aware of any incidents to report them to the force and to the RSPCA. Mrs Field said the attack on her cat, which is three years old, had left the animal "very, very subdued" and needing to be "persuaded to come for food". She said: "He didn't want to come near anybody, which is very out of character because he normally comes, jumps on my lap and loves a cuddle. "It felt like he was shying away from everyone in case they were going to hurt him." Mrs Field also said that she thought more than one person would have been involved because her pet would have "wiggled and run away if he wasn't held down". Similar attacks were reported on other pets in Pinchbeck, near Spalding, and Kirton, near Boston, in February. It is not known if the incidents are linked.
