HRF seeks immediate repeal of Waqf(Amendment) Act, 2025

The Hindu23-04-2025

The Human Rights Forum (HRF) A.P. State Committee, has demanded immediate repeal of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, which enables the State to acquire the properties of religious organisations.
The amendment provides for violation of equality and religious autonomy besides allowing encroachers to own the waqf lands. It also gives scopes for outbreak of riots at Masjids, Dargahs and Muslim burial grounds. The amendment, which questions the very existence of the Muslim minorities, is an 'attack' on the basic structure of the Constitution, HRF State president K.V. Jagannadha Rao and general secretary Y. Rajesh alleged in a statement.
While Parliament has the right to amend the Constitution, the Supreme Court had clarified on various occasions in the past, that Parliament has no right to change the basic structure of the Constitution. The HRF leaders sought immediate cancellation of six guidelines in the Waqf Act. These include repeal of the amendment pertaining to appointment of non-Muslims in Waqf Board or the council, upholding Section 40, and strengthening of the rule that 'Once a Waqf, always a Waqf'.

Last Updated: In addition to the revised salary, both top parliamentary officials will receive a 50% temporary allowance, a report claimed. The Pakistani government significantly increased the monthly salaries of the National Assembly Speaker and Senate Chairman to ₹1.3 million, a sharp rise from the previous figure of ₹205,000, as per a report by Samaa TV. The Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs issued the notification on May 29, but details of the raise surfaced publicly only on Friday, as per the report. In addition to the revised salary, both top parliamentary officials will receive a 50% temporary allowance, pushing their monthly compensation even higher. The new salary structure will be applied retrospectively from January 1, 2025, the report added. Salaries Of Pakistan's Government Officials Raised This pay hike comes amid a broader trend of increased remuneration for government officials. In March, salaries and allowances for federal ministers, ministers of state, and advisers were also raised- by as much as 188%- following an amendment to the Federal Ministers and Ministers of State (Allowances and Salaries) Act, 1975. After the revision, federal ministers now earn ₹519,000 per month, up from ₹200,000. Earlier this year, Pakistan's Finance Committee approved salary increases for National Assembly members and senators as well, raising their monthly salaries to ₹519,000. The salary hikes come at a time when Pakistan continues to grapple with economic challenges, including inflation and pressure from international lenders for fiscal restraint. Officials must treat transgender persons with respect, says Udupi DC

Udupi: Deputy commissioner Vidya Kumari K stressed that officials must treat transgender persons with dignity and respect when they visit govt offices and ensure their work is carried out as per the rules. At an awareness workshop on transgender rights held at the deputy commissioner's office in Rajathadri, she said, "Everyone is equal before the law. The Constitution prohibits discrimination based on caste, community, or gender. Any disrespectful behaviour towards transgender persons by govt staff will invite legal action." The DC noted that the govt has introduced various schemes and welfare programmes for the upliftment of the transgender community. She said awareness must be created about these schemes so that transgender persons can benefit from them. "They are also eligible for guarantee schemes. They must be ensured access to benefits such as housing and employment," she added. Bajrang Dal warns protest in Karnataka

Mangaluru: Bajrang Dal zonal coordinator Prabhanjan Soorya said that a statewide protest will be organised if police book Hindutva activist Bharath Kumdelu in the murder case of Abdul Rahiman. Addressing media persons here on Saturday, Soorya accused the govt of misusing police in connection with the murder case of Abdul Rahiman. "Efforts are being made to fix Bharath Kumdelu in the murder of Rahiman from Kolthamajal. The govt is targeting Hindutva organisation leaders and activists through fabricated evidence in the murder investigation, due to pressure from Muslim groups, by misusing the police department. The Bajrang Dal condemns this very strongly," he said. The Congress govt once planned to ban Bajrang Dal to ensure votes of Muslims during the election. Further, the govt has been trying to bring a bad reputation to the organisation by filing false cases against activists and leaders. In the coastal district, the govt continued its agenda by adding the names of Bajrang Dal leaders to the list of rowdy-sheeters and goonda elements, he said. "Bajrang Dal is a nationalist organisation engaged in hundreds of activities including the protection of cows, women, children, and other initiatives. If Kumdelu's name is included in the case, we will hold protests in all district headquarters and villages," he warned. Police visiting Hindu activists at midnight is an effort to suppress the organisation. He condemned police search at Kumdelu's house. Further, he urged police to find the actual reason behind the murder of Abdul Rahiman to ascertain whether he was killed because of personal enmity. Bajrang Dal leaders Bhujanga Kulal and Puneeth Attavar were present.
