Bill Hader describes ‘shock' of LA wildfires and the sweet way girlfriend Ali Wong helped him in the aftermath
Bill Hader was in Malibu filming a Volkswagen commercial with his former 'SNL' co-stars Kristen Wiig and Fred Armisen when a devastating wildfire began ripping through the Pacific Palisades, the affluent West Los Angeles neighborhood perched atop a peak overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
Hader opened up about seeing his community destroyed and his experience in the aftermath for the first time on a recent episode of Conan O'Brien's podcast, 'Conan O'Brien Needs A Friend.'
With help from a news crew, as seen in a viral clip, Hader made his way to his home and was grateful to see it was still standing. However, he said, it was 'unlivable' and filled with 'toxic stuff everywhere.'
'There's just devastation all around,' he said. 'It was no good. I was just in total shock.'
The once picturesque community was reduced to ash and rubble in January when multiple wildfires erupted in Los Angles. The Eaton Fire, which burned through Altadena on LA's East Side, and The Palisades Fire are considered the most destructive fires in LA history and killed 29 people.
Hader said he has a 'great support system of friends,' including his girlfriend, comedian Ali Wong, who supported him in the aftermath. Wong, he said, helped him go clothes shopping after his kids noticed he was still wearing only sweatpants.
'It was very sweet. It meant a lot to me,' he said. 'My kids are like, 'You're living in your pajamas,' like, they're very worried. And I told her about that and she was like, 'Let me take you to get some clothes.''
The hardest part, he said, was knowing his kids lost so much and 'just seeing the devastation in that community and everything, I was speechless.'
Hader has three daughters – Hannah, Harper and Hayley – who he shares with his ex-wife, director and screenwriter Maggie Carey. Hader said they have been 'resilient' throughout the ordeal.
'Everybody's like, are you there for your kids? And it's like, 'No, I'm getting more from them,'' he said. 'I'm so inspired by them and their ability to move and adapt and be positive.'

An ‘S.N.L.' Secret Weapon Retires After 50 Years
The Stiegelbauer workshop, where Stephen DeMaria coordinated the construction of sets for 'Saturday Night Live,' is in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, miles from 30 Rockefeller Plaza. Geographically, and in the minds of 'S.N.L.' fans, DeMaria's name was always far removed from the prestige and glamour of the show that has defined American comedy since 1975. But while most viewers have never heard of him, he has spent 50 years setting the scenes for the show's most memorable moments. And now he is done. DeMaria, known as 'Demo' in the shop, retired after the 50th season finale, May 17. The day before, the white-haired, 87-year-old carpenter was leaning over his drafting table, inspecting blueprints and fiddling with the No. 2 pencil usually found behind his ear. For DeMaria and his crew, the show had already begun. Stiegelbauer Associates Inc. is a cross between a shop class and a late-night museum: A Rainbow Room marquee hangs above a workbench; a leftover airplane set sits plastic-wrapped; photos of past sets installed in the show's Studio 8H are framed on every wall. During show weeks, sets are assembled all over the shop by an eclectic crew of craftspeople, many of whom have worked on 'S.N.L.' for decades. As the foreman, DeMaria coordinates the teams assigned to build the sets designed at 30 Rock. Then he oversees the construction, moseying through the shop and kicking up sawdust with his cane as he checks in at the workstations. The cane was the result of an injury he suffered at an end-of-season celebration last year: After a night of tearing up the dance floor, he fell off a curb and broke his hip. 'The best time of my life is the 'S.N.L.' parties,' he said. 'I'll be on the dance floor when I get there, and I won't leave until 5 in the morning.' His favorite, he said, was the 2012 end-of-season party, after an episode hosted by Mick Jagger. 'He was dancing all over the studio, so I got involved,' DeMaria recalled. Dakota Johnson's revealing dress derails 'Tonight Show 'interview: 'Does anyone have a blanket?'
Dakota Johnson could tell her revealing black mini-dress was going to be a problem from the very first moment she sat down on Monday's episode of The Tonight Show. 'Oh God,' the Materialists star exclaimed as she attempted to pull down the dress while also trying to keep its plunging neckline in place. When host Jimmy Fallon checked in to see if she was okay, Johnson promptly declared, 'This is the wrong outfit.' A laughing Fallon tried his best to show support for Johnson and her low-cut look. 'No, no. I think it's perfect, you look great,' he said. 'Just don't move.' Entertainment Weekly Johnson fully leaned into the absurdity of the situation, too. 'My eyes are up here,' she teased, leading a flustered Fallon to throw his head skyward. 'I can't even look there,' he confessed. 'I don't know what to do. I'm confused.' Fallon attempted to get their conversation back on track by reminding Johnson that the last time they saw each other was at the Saturday Night Live 50th Anniversary special in February, but the Madame Web actress remained fixated on her dress. 'Tell me if there's a problem,' she told Fallon about her outfit. In response, the SNL alum cast a wary eye toward her dress and, with one hand raised, noted, 'Right now, there's not a problem. There's almost a problem, but not quite — it's just… everything is going according to plan.' Johnson added that she'd also 'keep my posture real good' to prevent any potential wardrobe malfunctions before asking, 'Does anyone have like, a blanket I could wear? Just kidding.' With no blankets at the ready, Fallon instead offered Johnson a tissue that she quickly shoved into the front of her dress. 'That's perfect. No one will even know the difference!' he joked. 'You look great!' The host then noted that Johnson looked 'gorgeous' and that he didn't want to 'ruin your outfit' with his gag gift. When he offered to throw the tissue away for her, Johnson teased, 'You want to keep it?' Quick on his feet, Fallon fired that good energy right back at her. 'I'm putting this on eBay this evening!' He teased as Johnson laughed. 'You won't believe where this tissue's [been]! TMZ!' Johnson continued to adjust her dress and place a hand over her chest throughout the interview, which culminated in Fallon later gifting her a green sweater that her father, Don Johnson, once gave him. 'Like the Sisterhood of the…,' Johnson began, with Fallon finishing the sentence: '…The Traveling Cardigan, yes.' Johnson then dramatically threw the sweater across the front of her dress before relaxing deep into her seat and — now protected from any unwanted surprises — pretending to wipe the sweat from her brow. This isn't the first time that Johnson has expertly weathered an awkward outfit moment on a late-night TV show. She previously had to hold up her dress throughout her entire Jimmy Kimmel Live interview last June after its singular strap broke at the beginning of their chat. 'My dress just, it just fell off,' Johnson confessed at the time. 'Well, I'll just hold it.'
