RTE GAA pundits argue over who started halftime row as Cork eventually topple Limerick in Munster final epic

THE halftime whistle in the Munster final only served to add to the drama as both coaching staffs harangued the referee.
It took 94 energy-sapping minutes and a penalty shootout to eventually decide a winner as Cork ended Limerick's six-year provincial reign.

Ref Thomas Walsh adopted a less is more approach when it came to blowing for fouls.
According to Joanne Cantwell he only blew for six fouls in the whole first half.
This led to both sides feeling aggrieved at times with the Cork fans especially vocal in expressing their frustration.
What was surprising though was that Rebels boss Pat Ryan did similar as he marched over to Walsh the second he blew it up.

His counterpart John Kiely and his staff spotted him doing so and raced out onto the centre of the pitch to cut him off from Walsh.
Tempers frayed as both sets of staffs mouthed off at one another before things did disperse after around 30 seconds.
RTE's pundits dissected it before the second half got underway.
Initially Liam Sheedy outlined that Walsh had contributed to a massively entertaining spectacle in a sport that is too fast to nail every single call.

The ex-Tipperary boss emphasized: "It got very heated here as you can imagine. Looking back on the first half, I think Thomas Walsh did a great job.
"In a high-intensity match like this, it's hard to get all the calls right.
Tipperary GAA star 'had to do live apology on RTE' the day after cursing during All-Ireland interview -
"They got pulled on one end for a throw pass that ended up in Cian Lynch's goal being disallowed.
"It was hard to see separation for Brian Hayes's handpass and that one stood and ended up in the back of the net."
Kilkenny icon Henry Shefflin then spoke for most observers with his analysis of who'd initiated the kerfuffle.
He said: "I thought Limerick were reacting to it, to be honest with you. They were saying 'we can see he's going for the referee'.
"In fairness the players are letting him alone, they're hurling."
When Donal Og Cusack's turn came, he acknowledged he may well be viewing things through red-tinted glasses but maintained that he felt it was the other way round.
He reckoned: "I may sound biased now, but when we analyse that back again. I think it was the other way. I genuinely do.
"I'm telling you I do. It was Kiely and Kinnerk going out, and straight away Wayne Sherlock and Pat Ryan.
"Their focus was to say, 'hold on a second here, he's refereeing the game. Why are ye trying to referee it?'
"And I guess that can be seen as a biased point of view, but that was my view of it."
It's worth noting that when Walsh ultimately succumbed to a cramp in extra-time and had to be replaced by James Owens, he received a nice ovation from the Gaelic Grounds crowd.

John Kiely: Limerick loss not on penalty-takers

Limerick manager John Kiely said his side's defeat was not on the three players who missed penalties in the shootout as they finally surrendered their Munster crown against Cork at TUS Gaelic Grounds. Darragh Fitzgibbon's equaliser from a '65 deep in injury-time of extra-time sent the Munster SHC final to a penalty shootout for the first time in history. After Nickie Quaid had given the defending champions an early advantage in the shootout with a save from Fitzgibbon, misses from Barry Murphy, Tom Morrissey and Declan Hannon saw Cork end Limerick's bid for seven-in-a-row in the province. It was a first defeat in a final for Kiely's Limerick after 16 final victories in seven years - six Munsters, five All-Irelands, three National Leagues and three Munster Leagues. "There is no dress rehearsal for this, there is no practicing for this," Kiely said of the shootout afterwards. "It is just put your best foot forward. "You are taking a shot on behalf of the group, it is not on the lads. "I thought Declan, Tom, and Barry, manfully, put their hand up to take these penalties. "As far as we are concerned, it was Limerick senior hurling team that lost this afternoon. It wasn't anything to do with Barry, Tom, or Declan for sure." As to whether penalties should decide a Munster hurling final, Kiely responded: "I think everybody would agree that it is normal play that a game should be finished. "Listen these are the rules, these are the procedures, and we have to go with that. Fair play to Cork. They took the penalties when they came around." Declan Hannon misses his penalty as Cork win the shootout 3-2 to be crowned Munster champions. #rtegaa 📺 @rte2 & @rteplayer 📻 Saturday Sport on @rteradio1 📱Updates: — The Sunday Game (@TheSundayGame) June 7, 2025 While Kiely praised the performance of the original match referee Thomas Walsh, he did express some bemusement at the amount of injury-time added on in the second half of extra-time. By that time, Walsh, who reffed the game throughout normal time and the start of extra-time, had to be replaced after suffering from cramp and James Owens took the whistle for the remainder of the contest. "We felt there was three minutes gone, it is hard to find three minutes of added time in a 10-minute half. There was only one minute in the first-half. "As I said, we'll have to go back, watch the tape, analyse it, break it down before we formulate a concrete opinion of it. But it was a little difficult to understand. "I thought Thomas did a great job. It was a pity that he got injured. He did a fantastic job. We have to move on. That is the end of the Munster championship for us." As for the game itself, Kiely cited Limerick's reduced scoring efficiency from their round robin victory over Cork as a key factor but reiterated his pride in his players after what has been a mammoth, unprecedented run in the province. "Our efficiency overall wasn't where it was at against Cork the first day. Our efficiency was just a bit down today. We were creating scoring opportunities, but it was a very difficult wind as well. It was a swirling breeze, and hard to score for both teams. "Cork had 24 scoring chances in the first-half but only 15 scores in the opening half. Their shooting efficiency was low as well. "We have a great record in extra-time. I thought we played exceptionally well, I thought we were the better team in extra-time. "I think we created 14 scoring chances to their 8 in extra-time, so I thought we had enough done to win the game in that extra-time period. I think Cork got a really good rub of the green there just in that last piece. "All told, I have just to be super proud of our fellas for the effort they put in. It was just an incredible effort.

Lauren Walsh slips back after a challenging day on the greens in Tenerife

The Castlewarden star (24) fired rounds of 67 and 68 to claim a two-shot lead at halfway at Abama Golf. But she bogeyed four of her first 11 holes in round three before making a double bogey six at the 15th in a 34-putt round. The Carton House touring professional fought back with a birdie at the par-five 17th, but at four-under, she's tied for tenth, four strokes behind the Czech Republic's Sara Kouskova. 'It was nice and steady today,' said Kouskova, who shot 69. 'Patient, I would say. Lots of solid shots and a great save at the 18th. 'I think yesterday was tough towards the end. I struggled to keep my focus when I was finishing. So it was nice to get it going today. I'm looking forward to some rest!' Kouskova claimed her maiden win in the Jabra Ladies Open at Evian Resort in her last start two weeks ago, but she is not getting ahead of herself in the Canaries. 'I try not to think about it [winning again],' she said. 'I'm just happy that I'm hitting good shots and we're making good decisions. We'll see what tomorrow brings.' Walsh still has a chance to record her maiden win, but with the top 12 players covered by just four strokes, it may require a low final round. Spain's Ana Pelaez Trivino, Singapore's Shannon Tan and Finland's Noora Komulainen are just a shot off the lead on seven-under-par. Germany's Helen Briem, Austria's Emma Spitz, Italy's Alessandra Fanali and New Zealand's Amelia Garvey lie just two strokes behind, while India's Diksha Dagar sits a shot further back on five-under-par. Walsh rounds out the top 10, four shots behind alongside Order of Merit number one Mimi Rhodes from England and Germany's Patricia Isabel Schmidt.
