Josh Emmett reacts to being the betting underdog at UFC on ESPN 65: 'Bet the house'

USA Today03-04-2025

LAS VEGAS – Josh Emmett has no issues with being an underdog at UFC on ESPN 65.
Emmett (19-4 MMA, 10-4 UFC) returns against unbeaten rising featherweight contender Lerone Murphy (15-0-1 MMA, 7-0-1 UFC) in Saturday's (ESPN, ESPN+) main event at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.
Emmett is as big as a +265 underdog in some sportsbooks, with Murphy as big as -345 as a favorite in others. The former interim title challenger relishes the role to play spoiler.
'Vegas, they like to make money,' Emmett said at Wednesday's media day. 'I love it. It's like my friends, the people that are betting, they love it when I'm a huge underdog. What, +275? Bet the house.'
Emmett hasn't competed since his brutal knockout of Bryce Mitchell in December 2023, which snapped a two-fight losing skid. The long layoff was partially intentional, but the Team Alpha Male fighter thinks with the way he fights, he can jump right back into the mix with a win.
'I've never been in a boring fight,' Emmett said. 'I know what the UFC wants to see. I know what the fans want to see. They're excited when I'm on a card because every strike I throw, I'm trying to finish the fight. I don't think I have to go out there and make a statement, but I'm going to. The goal is to be a world champion. That's always the goal.
'Murphy wasn't the original opponent that I wanted because he is behind me (in the rankings). It's a high risk for really no reward. But at the end of the day, I've never turned down a fight. I've always fought these fights. I've fought the best in the world, so I should be able to go out there, handle business and see what's next.'
With devastating knockouts over the likes of Mitchell, Ricardo Lamas, and Michael Johnson on his resume, Emmett has something special in store for Saturday.
'I feel like I've not been at my best in every fight, I was getting worse,' Emmett said. 'I'll tell you now, though: Over the course of the last 14 months, we've been working on my power and everything, and I can promise you, I'm so much more powerful than I was. So wait till that right hand connects.'

Merab Dvalishvili lauds ex-champ Aljamain Sterling for UFC 316 title prep

Merab Dvalishvili lauds ex-champ Aljamain Sterling for UFC 316 title prep Show Caption Hide Caption UFC 316: Merab Dvalishvili post-fight interview UFC 316 winner Merab Dvalishvili spoke to MMA Junkie and reporters post-fight after his bantamweight title defense over Sean O'Malley. NEWARK, N.J. – Merab Dvalishvili has set the bar high for gifts at his pal Aljamain Sterling's upcoming wedding. Dvalishvili (20-4 MMA, 13-2 UFC) on Saturday defended his bantamweight title in a rematch with ex-champ Sean O'Malley (18-3 MMA, 10-3 UFC) in the UFC 316 main event. Dvalishvili beat O'Malley with a dominant decision this past fall, and made things look even easier with a third-round submission in the rematch. Afterward, the champ credited his longtime good friend and training partner, former bantamweight champ Aljamain Sterling, for working with him during training camp – and pledged to give him half of his $50,000 Performance of the Night bonus as a wedding gift. When Sterling was champion, Dvalishvili said he was content to not fight for the belt as long as his friend held it. But O'Malley was the one who dethroned Sterling, which paved the way for Dvalishvili to make his title run – and sent Sterling to featherweight. "In this training camp, my friend Aljamain Sterling helped me so much," Dvalishvili said at his post-fight news conference at Prudential Center. "He doesn't have a fight (booked) – he's getting married. He doesn't really like sparring, but he was sparring with me three times a week (to mimic O'Malley). He was two times better than Sean O'Malley's striking. He was not trying to shoot on me, take me down. "That proves again that it's not always the best fighter who wins. O'Malley got really lucky against Aljo. But I'm grateful for my friend Aljamain Sterling." Dvalishvili has become known for his relentless pace and cardio – but also has been criticized for the lack of finishes on his resume. The submission of O'Malley broke a streak of five straight decision wins for the champ. Overall, 15 of his 20 career wins have gone the distance. His only UFC finish prior to the O'Malley rematch came against Marlon Moraes in 2021. Check out Dvalishvili's full post-fight news conference above.

Missouri Tigers Crack Top 25 of ESPN's Power Index Rankings

Missouri Tigers Crack Top 25 of ESPN's Power Index Rankings originally appeared on Athlon Sports. In recent rankings from various analysts, the Missouri Tigers have been left out of the top 25. In ESPN's recent Football Power Index (FPI) rankings, however, Mizzou made the cut. Advertisement The FPI estimates each FBS team's strengths on all three sides of the ball, and it takes into account all roster movements during the offseason. Those strength projections are then run through a simulation of the team's upcoming schedule 20,000 times to calculate average projections for their success throughout the season. Missouri ranks No. 23 for projected strength, and they've been given a projected win-loss total of 6.9-5.2. As has been the trend in recent seasons, the defense has continued to turn heads. The Tigers' defense is ranked No. 17 in the country with an FPI score of 6.2. Mizzou is also projected to compete in one of the "most anticipated" games of the season, based on ESPN's game quality analytics that gauge both team's FPI scores. Advertisement In Week 7, the Tigers will host Alabama, ranking No. 23 out of the top 25 matchups of the season. The game earned an 89.2 rating, and it'll mark the first time since 2020 that Mizzou has hosted the Crimson Tide. Of the 16 schools in the Southeastern Conference, 13 of them ranked within ESPN's top 25 with Texas, Georgia and Alabama taking No. 1, 2 and 3, respectively. The simulations projected an average of 4.6 teams from the SEC will make the College Football Playoff, and Missouri made the Playoff in 9.2 percent of the simulations. Missouri Tigers mascot Truman dances on the sideline against the Iowa Hawkeyes during the second half at Nissan Roberts-Imagn Images As the FPI rankings show, the Tigers' defense has a real shot at being one of the best units in the country, but there's less confidence on the other side of the ball. Especially with new starters at quarterback, running back, wide receiver and three offensive line spots. Advertisement Regardless, summer has arrived and the 2025 season is right around the corner. Missouri's motto of having 'something to prove' will need to hold up. Marlins pitcher Ryan Weathers was terrifyingly struck in the head by catcher's throw

Marlins pitcher Ryan Weathers has gone through countless warmups during his baseball career, but Saturday's freak accident with catcher Nick Fortes had to be a first. With Weathers going through his regular routine ahead of Miami's game against the Rays, he finished his final warmup pitch and started walking across the path of the mound. That was when Fortes' throw over to second struck Weathers right on the head. Advertisement Weathers immediately went down in pain and understandably so — that was incredibly scary. The trainers took to the field to attend to Weathers, and at the time, he said he was fine to stay in the game. But after three innings, Weathers was taken out of the game. He described feeling increasingly worse as the game went on, via ESPN: "I just felt very disconnected out there a little bit just with like, just all that adrenaline left me," he said. "... It was kind of like that episode of 'SpongeBob' where like everything's on fire inside of his brain and I just felt like I was in pure chaos after that happened. So it was just kind of the right time to come out of the game there." Given the circumstances, it could have been much worse. He was cleared of a concussion on Saturday, and the Marlins won, 11-10.
