Vietjet doubles Airbus A330 order in US$8b deal for Asia, Europe expansion plans
HANOI, May 26 — Vietnamese airline Vietjet Air said Monday it will buy 20 widebody Airbus A330-900 planes, doubling its order from the aviation giant in a deal worth an estimated US$8 billion.
The budget carrier's chairwoman Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao signed the deal with Airbus as French President Emmanuel Macron looked on as he made an official visit to Hanoi.
The carrier said the order was part of its plans to expand its operations in Asia as well as introducing future long-haul services to Europe.
The announcement comes on top of the 20 A330-900s ordered by VietJet in February last year.
The airline said the A330s would enable it to 'increase flights on high-capacity routes across the Asia-Pacific region, as well as to introduce future long haul services to Europe'.
The list price of the aircraft was around seven billion euros (US$8 billion), an Airbus source told AFP.
'Vietjet remains dedicated to delivering greater connectivity and sustainable air travel for millions of passengers in Vietnam and around the world,' Thao said in the Vietjet statement.
The Vietjet fleet currently numbers 115 aircraft, all Airbus, including seven A330-300s operating to destinations in Australia, India and Kazakhstan.
The carrier has another 96 single-aisle A320s on order from Airbus.
The Vietjet deal is one of a raft of agreements expected to be signed between Vietnamese and French companies as Macron makes his official visit to the communist country, which was once ruled by France. — AFP

Petronas's LNG venture in Canada to come on stream within a couple of weeks
Petronas president and group CEO Tengku Muhammad Taufik Aziz said its Canadian LNG reserves are strategically positioned for shipment to Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and even China. PETALING JAYA : Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) has reiterated it is not exiting Canada, stating its liquefied natural gas (LNG) venture there is coming on stream within a couple of weeks. 'Canada is not on our exit radar. We're not exiting Canada. 'We are constantly entertaining overtures and proposals,' Petronas president and group CEO Tengku Muhammad Taufik Aziz said at an editors' briefing in Kuala Lumpur today. 'That is going to be the natural course of business and it (Canada) has a very resource-endowed geography,' Bernama reported him as saying. Tengku Taufik said there would be a regular shipping out of LNG from Canada. Petronas has a 25% stake in LNG Canada. 'We have 53 trillion cubic feet (TCF) of reserves. It is strategically positioned between the coast of Canada and Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and even China. 'Some other LNG routes are compromised by geopolitical hostility … That is another advantage. 'That was the rationale to do this. We built that node. We wanted to make sure it's positioned strategically.' Petronas hopes to have more engagements and constructive dialogues for the national oil firm to obtain additional LNG leverage in Canada. 'We hope that the (new) Canadian government will be more appreciative and supportive of it becoming a new, cleaner energy source for the rest of the developing world,' he added. Tengku Taufik said it was crucial for Petronas to preserve its position in market share in the LNG space in Canada while also looking at how to build its upstream portfolio effectively. Responding to a question on whether Petronas would look to liquidate some assets or diversify, Tengku Taufik said it would continue its asset rationalisation to keep its operations lean. He noted that a divestment exercise was carried out in Argentina as Petronas could not make optimal use of its assets in the country and found an interested party to acquire them. In April this year, Buenos Aires-based Vista Energy reportedly acquired Petronas's 50% stake in the La Amarga Chica oil field in Argentina's Vaca Muerta shale basin for about US$1.5 billion (RM7.1 billion). Vista Energy, the second-biggest crude oil producer in the area will pay US$900 million upfront for the stake, with one-third of that sum financed through a loan from Banco Santander SA. The remainder will be paid in two instalments in 2029 and 2030.

Viral tariff schedule is fake, says TNB
TNB has clarified that it did not issue a widely circulated electricity tariff schedule that bears its logo and claims a tariff hike. (TNB pic) PETALING JAYA : Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) has dismissed a widely circulated electricity tariff schedule on WhatsApp as fake, urging the public not to fall for any misinformation. In a statement today, TNB clarified that the schedule, which bears the TNB logo and claims of a tariff hike, is fake and was not issued by the company. 'The false schedule misleadingly suggests a tariff increase that features the TNB logo,' it said. 'The circulation of such false information is creating unnecessary confusion among customers.' TNB stressed that as of today, no official announcement has been made regarding any changes to electricity tariffs affecting consumers. The company also reminded the public to be responsible with the content they share online. 'We strongly advise the public to avoid sharing unverified information,' it said. For accurate and updated information, TNB urged consumers to refer only to official government and TNB platforms for any updates on electricity tariffs. Last December, TNB proposed a new tariff schedule with a base tariff of 45.62 sen per kilowatt-hour for Peninsular Malaysia under Regulatory Period 4 (RP4), for implementation from July 1, 2025. The base tariff under RP3 had been set at 39.95 sen/kWh between 2022 and 2024. Deputy prime minister Fadillah Yusof then said no decision had been made on the new tariff as the government was still finalising the matter. Fadillah is also the energy transition and water transformation minister.
