Hong Kong to host table tennis' WTT Finals in December
Hong Kong has been chosen as the host of table tennis' season-ending WTT Finals, the sport's chiefs announced on Monday.

The event, in which the highest-ranked players will compete for a prize pool of US$1.3million, will take place at Hong Kong Coliseum from December 10 to 14.

Delap, 22, scored 12 Premier League goals during his sole season at Portman Road but could not prevent Ipswich making an immediate return to the Championship. Manchester United and Everton were also reportedly willing to meet the buyout clause in the England under-21 international's contract. But Chelsea have won the race for the former Manchester City forward, bolstering their attacking options ahead of the Club World Cup in the United States, starting later this month. "I understand the stature of this club and can see the trajectory it is on with these players and the head coach," said Delap, who has signed a six-year contract, in a Chelsea statement. "It's going to be an incredible place for me to develop, and I hope to achieve amazing things here and help the club win more trophies." The Blues finished fourth in the Premier League and will return to the Champions League next season after a two-year absence. And Enzo Maresca's men last week beat Real Betis 4-1 in the Conference League final to secure a trophy in the Italian manager's first season in charge. In mid-December Chelsea were within touching distance of eventual Premier League champions Liverpool before hitting a rocky patch. They finished the season strongly, securing a top-five spot on the final day of the season but were hamstrung by their lack of a clinical number nine. Senegal international Nicolas Jackson scored just 10 times in 30 Premier League appearances, while Christopher Nkunku looks set to leave the club after an underwhelming two-year spell. Delap, the son of former Stoke midfielder Rory Delap, began his career at Manchester City but struggled to break into Pep Guardiola's star-studded first team. After loan spells in the second tier with Stoke, Preston and Hull, he was snapped up by Ipswich after they won promotion to the Premier League a year ago. Delap was one of the few success stories for the Tractor Boys during a difficult season as they were relegated back to the Championship with just 22 points. Chelsea will face Flamengo, LAFC and ES Tunis in the group stages of the Club World Cup, which gets underway on June 14. (AFP)

File photo: Reuters Bruno Fernandes confirmed he rejected a huge offer from Saudi Arabia to stay at Manchester United, saying he wanted to "continue to play at the highest level". Speaking to media in a Portugal camp ahead of Wednesday's Nations League semi-final against Germany in Munich, Fernandes confirmed he received an "exciting offer" from Al Hilal but wanted to be part of Ruben Amorim's rebuild at Old Trafford. Reports said Al Hilal were willing to pay United up to US$135 million for the 30-year-old Portugal international. "The president of Al Hilal called me and asked me if I wanted to move there," Fernandes confirmed, saying the club "waited for me to think about my future". "I talked to the gaffer and he asked me not to go," Fernandes revealed. "Man United said they didn't want to sell me. They said if I wanted to go I could but they didn't need the money." The player said a transfer would have been "easy" with several Portuguese players already in Saudi Arabia, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Joao Cancelo and Ruben Neves, but added: "I want to play at the highest possible level. "I want to play major competitions. I know I still can and I want to be happy doing the thing I love the most," he added. "For better or worse, this is how I see football and I'm passionate about football and this is the decision I've made." United endured their worst finish of the Premier League era, finishing 15th. They also lost the Europa League final to Tottenham. United captain Fernandes was one of the few players to emerge with credit from a disastrous season, scoring 19 goals and making 19 assists across all competitions. Former United captain Gary Neville, now a Sky Sports pundit, said the development was "significant". "I think that there was an element of this situation that meant United getting that level of money, for someone of Bruno's age, obviously, you couldn't say that it would have been a bad deal," he said. "But, on the other hand, Manchester United's star player – only player at times – for the last four, five, six years, has been Bruno Fernandes. He's so important." "To turn that money down at a point where Manchester United are at their lowest ebb and say, 'No, I want to fight through this, I want to see it through the other side, I want to come out and achieve things,' I think it says a lot about him as a person, as a character," Neville added. "The club needs people who are going to run through a brick wall for them." United are expected to be busy in the transfer market as Amorim reshapes his under-performing squad. The club have already signed Brazil forward Matheus Cunha from Wolves and are being heavily linked with Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo. Departures could include Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, Antony and Alejandro Garnacho. Photo: AFP Chelsea have announced the signing of Portuguese midfielder Dario Essugo from Sporting Lisbon in a deal worth US$25 million. The 20-year-old, who spent last season on loan at Spanish side Las Palmas as they were relegated from La Liga, will be available to feature for the Blues at the Club World Cup later this month. Essugo came through Sporting's academy and became the youngest player to appear for the club's first team at the age of 16 in March 2021. Deals for both Essugo and Geovany Quenda were initially agreed in March. Quenda will remain at Sporting until the end of the 2025-2026 season, while Chelsea are set to further boost their squad in the coming days as they close in on a deal for Ipswich striker Liam Delap.
