5 Foods to Buy Every Week to Help Reduce Your Stroke Risk, Recommended by Dietitians

Experts share their top five favorite foods, including salmon, chickpeas and spinach, to keep your stroke risk low.
Staying active, getting regular checkups and limiting alcohol can also help.Your brain is arguably your body's most important organ, serving as the command center for thought, memory, emotion and innumerable everyday functions. For obvious reasons, protecting it from the debilitating effects of stroke is critical.
Fortunately, you can shore up your brain's vascular defenses with what you put in your shopping cart—and ultimately on your plate. 'Eating well plays a supportive role in reducing stroke risk and supporting recovery after a stroke,' says Vanessa King, M.S., RDN. 'A heart-healthy, Mediterranean-style eating plan rich in olive oil, whole grains, fruits, vegetables and legumes has been shown to cut stroke risk by 40% for high-risk individuals.' An additional study adds to this, finding that those with the highest-quality diets (as determined by the Alternative Healthy Eating Index) had a 40% lower risk of stroke compared to those with the lowest-quality diets, regardless of other lifestyle factors.

Seafood and stroke reduction go hand in hand. Research shows that eating fish lowers your risk of stroke. This is especially true if the fish is a source of omega-3 fatty acids, like salmon, tuna and mackerel. If you're looking to boost your seafood intake, salmon is a tasty, high-protein place to start.
'Three ounces of cooked salmon is a great source of vitamins B6 and B12, providing 23% of the Daily Value of B6 and over 100% of the Daily Value of B12,' says King. These B vitamins may lower total blood homocysteine concentrations—a key risk factor for stroke. King suggests enjoying the pink fish as a protein topper for salads like Salad Niçoise or making a simple baked version.
For stroke prevention, there's no need to ditch your morning coffee, says Amy Brownstein, M.S., RDN. The reason for java's beneficial effects in the brain? 'Besides its caffeine content, coffee is a significant source of polyphenols like chlorogenic acid, which may contribute to lower blood pressure levels,' shares Brownstein.
As part of your coffee routine, Brownstein recommends limiting sweeteners. Increasing evidence shows that added sugars can contribute to stroke risk. Check out these healthy coffee drinks for inspiration.
You probably know spinach is packed with nutrients, but did you know those nutrients promote blood flow in your brain? 'A half-cup of cooked spinach is a great source of folate and a good source of magnesium,' says King. One study found that high dietary folate intake was linked to a 17% reduction in incidence of stroke. Another study revealed that those with higher magnesium intakes (18.5 milligrams or more per 100 calories a day) had a 40% reduced risk of stroke compared to those on the lower end of magnesium intake (12 mg per 100 calories a day). For reference, on a 2,000-calorie diet, this would equate to 370 mg a day on the higher end and 240 mg on the lower end.
Go green with recipes that serve spinach hot or cold. 'It can be cooked in olive oil and topped with pumpkin seeds and raisins in a Spanish style,' suggests King. Or, for a warmer-weather preparation, a strawberry-balsamic spinach salad might hit the spot.
Small-but-mighty chickpeas are another nutrient-dense choice packed with stroke-fighting vitamins. According to King, a cup of these versatile beans adds 10% of the Daily Value of homocysteine-lowering vitamin B6. And since they come conveniently precooked, it's easy to crack open a can to upgrade nutrition in your meals. 'They serve as a fiber-rich protein source for stews, salads, curries and snacks,' says King.
It's time to put misconceptions about soy foods to rest. Choices like tofu, tempeh and edamame are all top-notch proteins for both your brain and your heart. 'Soy proteins lower blood pressure,' says Brownstein. 'They're naturally low in fat, and compounds like phytoestrogens and isoflavones positively influence blood pressure by potentially relaxing blood vessels.'
You don't have to completely replace meat with soy to enjoy these benefits, either. Brownstein suggests starting with a meatless Monday—replace one meat-based meal with a soy-based food. (These beefless tacos are an easy place to start!)
Choosing cardiovascular-friendly foods is, of course, only one piece of the stroke prevention puzzle. Reducing your risk involves multiple lifestyle factors. In your efforts to stay stroke-free, try incorporating the following:
Get active: 'Participate in regular physical activity to help maintain a healthy weight and cholesterol and blood pressure levels,' Brownstein advises. The American Heart Association recommends 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise per week.
Quit smoking. If you're a smoker, ditching this habit is one of the most effective ways to decrease your risk of stroke.
. Alcohol is known for raising both blood pressure and cholesterol. Stick to the recommended intake of two alcoholic drinks or fewer per day for men and one drink or fewer for women.
Get regular checkups. 'Routine blood work and medical evaluations help you stay on top of your health, enabling you to make lifestyle changes before complications arise,' says Brownstein. She recommends regular checks on blood sugar, cholesterol and blood pressure.
Filling your grocery cart with stroke-prevention foods doesn't have to involve anything fancy. Plenty of everyday items can play a role in keeping a healthy blood flow in your brain. Try focusing on nutrient-dense whole foods that are lower in sodium and that provide vitamins and minerals like folic acid, vitamin B12, vitamin B6 and magnesium. Every bite adds up! 'Even small shifts in the kitchen can make a big impact on stroke prevention,' says King.

In the commercial setting, non-ambulatory patients should no longer receive Elevidys. In the clinical trial setting, enrolment and dosing of non-ambulatory patients will be immediately paused until additional risk mitigation measures (e.g. immune modulatory treatment) are implemented in the study protocol. Health authorities, investigators and physicians are being informed so that patient care can be quickly adjusted. This decision follows careful assessment of two cases in non-ambulatory patients of fatal acute liver failure (ALF), an identified risk of Elevidys and other AAV-mediated gene therapies, which led to a reassessment of the benefit-risk profile as unfavourable for patients with DMD who are non-ambulatory. The new dosing restrictions do not impact the treatment of ambulatory DMD patients of any age, and the benefit-risk ratio remains positive in the ambulatory patient population. "We are deeply saddened by the loss of these two young men and are urgently working to mitigate any risks related to the use of Elevidys,' said Levi Garraway, M.D., Ph.D., Chief Medical Officer and Head of Global Product Development, Roche. "Patient safety is always our highest priority. Therefore, we have recommended halting treatment with Elevidys in non-ambulatory patients with immediate effect.' DMD is a rare, genetic, muscle-wasting disease that progresses rapidly from early childhood. Duchenne primarily affects males, with 1 in 5,000 boys born worldwide having Duchenne. Everyone with Duchenne will eventually lose the ability to walk, along with upper limb, lung and cardiac function. The two fatal ALF cases occurred in non-ambulatory patients, out of a total of approximately 140 non-ambulatory patients treated with Elevidys globally to date. Following the first case of fatal ALF, European regulators requested that Roche and Sarepta put temporary clinical holds on Elevidys studies 104 (NCT06241950), 302 (ENVOL, NCT06128564) and 303 (ENVISION Study 303, NCT05310071). The temporary clinical holds are still in effect. Outside of Europe, dosing will be paused, effective immediately, for the ENVISION trial. The dosing restrictions will also go into effect for future dosing of commercial non-ambulatory patients. Elevidys has been approved by regulatory authorities in eight Roche territories for the treatment of DMD including Bahrain, Brazil, Israel, Japan, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, and the UAE. In 2019, Roche entered into a global collaboration agreement with Sarepta Therapeutics, Inc. to commercialise Elevidys in territories outside the U.S. Roche and Sarepta jointly manage the clinical studies for Elevidys. The study is recruiting ambulatory patients. About Elevidys™ (delandistrogene moxeparvovec) Elevidys is a one-time treatment administered through a single intravenous dose and the first and only approved gene therapy for Duchenne. (NASDAQ:SRPT), the leader in precision genetic medicine for rare diseases, today provided a safety update regarding ELEVIDYS (delandistrogene moxeparvovec-rokl), the only approved gene therapy for patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, and steps the Company is taking to strengthen the safety profile in non-ambulatory patients. These steps follow a second reported case of acute liver failure (ALF) resulting in death. The cases of ALF to date have both occurred in non-ambulatory individuals with Duchenne. Sarepta extends its deepest sympathies to the affected families and care teams. Key Safety Initiatives Evaluating and Enhancing Immunosuppressive Regimen: As part of a comprehensive review of safety data, Sarepta is taking proactive steps to mitigate the risk of acute liver failure in non-ambulatory patients. Sarepta is working to immediately convene an independent group of leading experts in Duchenne and liver health to consider an enhanced immunosuppression regimen for ELEVIDYS. This panel will evaluate data and assess our proposed regimen, which includes sirolimus and is supported by preclinical data demonstrating the effectiveness of additional immunosuppression in moderating liver enzyme elevations, a key factor in mitigating potential safety events. Sarepta will share the panel's recommendations with the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), and implementation of any new regimen will be subject to FDA guidance and allowance. Suspending Shipments of ELEVIDYS for Non-Ambulatory Patients: Sarepta is temporarily suspending shipments of ELEVIDYS for non-ambulatory patients while an enhanced immunosuppressive regimen is evaluated, discussed with regulatory bodies, and put in place. For ambulatory patients, no treatment changes are being proposed and the current practice of administering corticosteroids before and after ELEVIDYS infusion, along with post-treatment monitoring, remains the same. ENVISION Study Paused: Sarepta has voluntarily paused dosing in the ENVISION clinical study (also known as Study SRP-9001-303). FDA concurs with this action. The pause will allow for the evaluation of a protocol amendment to incorporate an enhanced immunosuppressive regimen for the non-ambulatory patient cohort and incorporate any additional feedback from the FDA. Regulatory alignment is needed before screening and dosing in ENVISION may resume. ENVISION is a global, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial evaluating ELEVIDYS in older ambulatory and non-ambulatory individuals living with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. In the U.S., it serves as the confirmatory trial required under the FDA's accelerated approval pathway for non-ambulatory patients. WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS: Infusion-related Reactions: Infusion-related reactions, including hypersensitivity reactions and anaphylaxis, have occurred during or up to several hours following ELEVIDYS administration. Closely monitor patients during administration and for at least 3 hours after the end of infusion. If symptoms of infusion-related reactions occur, slow, or stop the infusion and give appropriate treatment. Once symptoms resolve, the infusion may be restarted at a lower rate. ELEVIDYS should be administered in a setting where treatment for infusion-related reactions is immediately available. Discontinue infusion for anaphylaxis. Acute Serious Liver Injury: Acute serious liver injury has been observed with ELEVIDYS, and administration may result in elevations of liver enzymes (such as GGT, GLDH, ALT, AST) or total bilirubin, typically seen within 8 weeks. Patients with preexisting liver impairment, chronic hepatic condition, or acute liver disease (e.g., acute hepatic viral infection) may be at higher risk of acute serious liver injury. Postpone ELEVIDYS administration in patients with acute liver disease until resolved or controlled. Prior to ELEVIDYS administration, perform liver enzyme test and monitor liver function (clinical exam, GGT, and total bilirubin) weekly for the first 3 months following ELEVIDYS infusion. Continue monitoring if clinically indicated, until results are unremarkable (normal clinical exam, GGT, and total bilirubin levels return to near baseline levels). Systemic corticosteroid treatment is recommended for patients before and after ELEVIDYS infusion. Adjust corticosteroid regimen when indicated. If acute serious liver injury is suspected, consultation with a specialist is recommended. Immune-mediated Myositis: In clinical trials, immune-mediated myositis has been observed approximately 1 month following ELEVIDYS infusion in patients with deletion mutations involving exon 8 and/or exon 9 in the DMD gene. Symptoms of severe muscle weakness, including dysphagia, dyspnea, and hypophonia, were observed. Limited data are available for ELEVIDYS treatment in patients with mutations in the DMD gene in exons 1 to 17 and/or exons 59 to 71. Patients with deletions in these regions may be at risk for a severe immune-mediated myositis reaction. Advise patients to contact a physician immediately if they experience any unexplained increased muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, including dysphagia, dyspnea, or hypophonia, as these may be symptoms of myositis. Consider additional immunomodulatory treatment (immunosuppressants [e.g., calcineurin-inhibitor] in addition to corticosteroids) based on patient's clinical presentation and medical history if these symptoms occur. Myocarditis: Acute serious myocarditis and troponin-I elevations have been observed following ELEVIDYS infusion in clinical trials. If a patient experiences myocarditis, those with pre-existing left ventricle ejection fraction (LVEF) impairment may be at higher risk of adverse outcomes. Monitor troponin-I before ELEVIDYS infusion and weekly for the first month following infusion and continue monitoring if clinically indicated. More frequent monitoring may be warranted in the presence of cardiac symptoms, such as chest pain or shortness of breath.
