Suspect in execution of Ukrainian POWs receives ministerial post in Russia's North Ossetia
Yuri "Buffalo" Abayev, 34, a former Russian army officer who has been identified by Ukraine's Defence Intelligence as one of those involved in the execution of Ukrainian prisoners of war (POWs), has been appointed as the Minister of Labour and Social Protection by the authorities in Russia's North Ossetia region.

Details: Menyailo said that Abayev, a Hero of Russia and recipient of the Order of Courage, is "disciplined" and "clearly understands why he is here and what needs to be done".
He has been appointed as part of Putin's Time of Heroes programme, which places participants of the war against Ukraine in government roles.

Abayev previously served in the 70th Guards Motorised Rifle Regiment and rose to the rank of deputy unit commander.
In June 2024, Defence Intelligence of Ukraine reported that it had identified Russian soldiers involved in the execution of Ukrainian prisoners of war in May 2024 near the village of Robotyne in Zaporizhzhia Oblast.
The perpetrators were members of an assault group from the 70th Motorised Rifle Regiment (military unit 71718), part of the 42nd Motorised Rifle Division of the 58th Army of the Southern Military District of the Russian Armed Forces.

It was reported that at the time of the execution of Ukrainian POWs near Robotyne, the 70th Motorised Rifle Regiment of the Russian Armed Forces was commanded by 34-year-old Lieutenant Colonel Yuri "Buffalo" Abayev.

Pennsylvania men accused in scheme that swiped $80M in U.S. Treasury checks
(WHTM) — Four Pennsylvania men are facing charges in connection with the theft of over $80 million in U.S. Treasury checks. The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania announced Wednesday charges against four men from the Philadelphia area: Tauheed Tucker, 23, and Saahir Irby, 27, both of Philadelphia; Cory Scott, 25, of Ardmore; and Alexander Telewoda, 25, of Clifton Heights. The men are facing felony conspiracy to steal government funds, theft of government funds, and mail theft charges. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Irby and Tucker were working as mail processing clerks for the U.S. Postal Service between June 2023 and Sept. 2024. They are accused of intercepting and swiping thousands of envelopes containing U.S. Treasury checks from mail sorting machines at the USPS Philadelphia processing center. The men then allegedly sold them to Scott and Telewoda, who then resold the checks on Telegram. They were mailed to buyers across the country who attempted to cash them. In total, $80 million in checks were allegedly stolen, $11 million of which were cashed. German Foreign Minister Wadephul heads to Rome for talks on Ukraine
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul is expected in Rome on Thursday for an international conference focused on EU security and the war in Ukraine. Hosted by Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, the meeting is taking place within the framework of the so-called Weimar Plus format. The group is an extension of the Weimar Triangle, which is made up of Germany, France and Poland. According to the German Foreign Office, both NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha will attend the conference. They are to be joined by representatives from Poland, Spain, the United Kingdom, France and the European Union. The meeting is taking place less than a month before the fourth Ukraine Recovery Conference, scheduled for July 10-11, at which some 2,000 representatives from politics, business and international organizations plan to discuss Ukraine's long-term prospects. After a bilateral meeting with Tajani, Wadephul's schedule sees him leave Rome for the Middle East on Thursday evening. The Foreign Office said the focus of the trip to the region is the catastrophic humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip and plans for a peaceful order in the territory after the end of the ongoing conflict with Israel.

EU could impose Russian oil price cap without US support, Kallas says
The European Union can impose an additional price cap on Russian oil without U.S. support, EU High Representative Kaja Kallas said at the Brussels Forum on June 11. "If you think about the oil going through the channels, it's mostly Europe, it's via the Baltic Sea, it's via the Black Sea. So even if the Americans are not on board, we can still do it and have an impact," Kallas said. The EU's 17th package of sanctions against Russia came into effect on May 20. The bloc is already working on its next wave of sanctions. The 18th EU sanctions package will include additional restrictions on energy, banking, oil, and other areas, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on June 10. "What the intelligence tells is that, now the sanctions will (harder hit) the supply chains of Russia needed to really fund this war," Kallas said. "Of course, it is important the United States... is together with us, and we have been operating together for quite some time," she said. Kallas noted the Group of Seven (G7) oil price cap was previously agreed upon to be 5% below the market price. "It is important, of course, what we do together, but it is also equally important for us what we do alone, because we alone are also a player," Kallas said. Kallas noted the EU is still an ally to the U.S., but recognized the dynamic between the two powers is changing. "We still value the relationship... I think with the Americans we are not growing apart, but growing up in our relationships," Kallas said. The upcoming G7 summit will take place in Alberta, Canada. A wide range of topics, including Russia's war against Ukraine, are expected to be discussed at the annual event. President Volodymyr Zelensky previously confirmed he would be attending the G7 summit after receiving an invitation from Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
