There is plenty going on the recruiting trail for Notre Dame football, and over the course of the last few days, its been a busy one.
Multiple offers have been sent out to different classes, but that wasn't the only news that the Irish received. With 16 commitments in the 2026 cycle, Notre Dame has one the country's best at the current moment.

For it to finish off near the top, they'll have to add multiple more players and keep the one's they have committed now. There is some good news and bad, so find out the latest on Notre Dame football's recruiting efforts.

2026 safety Joey O'Brien
This is a big visit for the Irish, as the 6-foot, 3-inch and 185-pound star is the No. 65 overall prospect. O'Brien is set to make his commitment on June 20th, and as of right now, he doesn't have any other trips planned. It's a battle between Oregon, Clemson, Penn State and Notre Dame, and we'll find out soon where the talented safety lands.
2026 tight end Evan Jacobson
The Wisconsin tight end changed up his schedule, as Mike Singer reports that Auburn and Florida State are out, and replaced by Notre Dame and Iowa State. You have to like how this one is playing out for the Irish, as the 6-foot, 7-inch and 220-pounder has the potential to be very good. Jacobson, the No. 274 ranked player, has already taken visits to Texas A&M, Missouri and Stanford, but still needs more time to make up his mind.
2026 defensive tackle Alister Vallejo commits to Michigan
While the Irish have multiple guys committed on the defensive line, they don't have a true interior player in that group yet. Vallejo has good size at 6-foot, 3-inches and 310-pounds and Notre Dame would have loved to beat out Michigan in this one, but you can't win them all.
2026 wide receiver Kaydon Finley
Singer again reporting that Finley will make a commitment on July 4th, less than a month from now. The 6-foot and 200-pound receiver will be on campus for his official visit this weekend, so the Irish will have a final chance to show him why South Bend is the best option. The nation's No. 110 player still has an official to Texas for next weekend, so this one is far from over.
What to make of this
Losing Vallejo isn't ideal, but they do have Tiki Hola committed at the moment. It's his size that separates him, and it'll be hard to find a replacement for that. The O'Brien news is very encouraging, especially considering the timing of the situation. It does seem like Notre Dame has some ground to make up, but they could push themselves to the top after this weekend. Same goes for the Finley verbal date, and Jacobson's change of plans, as they can also be viewed as good developments for the Irish.

Fox Sports 1 host continues his campaign against Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy
Fox Sports 1 host continues his campaign against Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy Colin Cowherd has made it as a successful radio host not by luck, but by hard work and knowing what gets folks to tune in to his shows. In recent years, it has been done by finding one player or two and targeting them with criticism before moving on to someone else. His latest target is Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy, whom he has been talking about at length this offseason. Coming off a 14-3 season, Cowherd has said the Vikings are poised for a regression, one reason is the division is too tough, the other is due to McCarthy being their starting quarterback. In his latest critique of the former Michigan quarterback, the Fox Sports 1 host dove into the conspiracy theory behind why he hasn't officially been named the starter as a reason to think the team isn't sold on him. "There's so much mystery here. Why does Minnesota keep flirting with other quarterbacks? And there's too many conflicting reports on JJ McCarthy, so I just find the whole thing. There's a lot of stuff I just don't know. I feel sometimes I'm getting, I'm getting a little bit of a spin job here. . .I never buy this: When you say this about a quarterback, that guy is a winner. Everybody under Jim Harbaugh and Steve Spurrier and Nick Saban's a winner. I don't want to hear that. If you go back and look his arm is modest. His escape ability is modest. His release wasn't super quick. There is no great trait." Cowherd has gone as far as to compare McCarthy to former Heisman Trophy winner Danny Wuerffel. He famously never panned out in the NFL, despite everyone offering similar praise of him being a proven winner after winning a National Championship with Florida. While Wurffel went 4-6 in his career as a starter and only threw for 12 touchdowns and 22 interceptions, signs point to McCarthy being a little better off than Wurffel.

College football analyst argues that USC and Notre Dame must continue to play every year
College football analyst argues that USC and Notre Dame must continue to play every year The past few weeks have certainly been a tense time for the future of the USC-Notre Dame football rivalry. The Trojans and Fighting Irish have been rivals with one another for nearly a century, and have faced off every year but one since World War II. However, the two schools do not have an agreement to extend their rivalry beyond 2026, and right now appear to be at an impasse over the future of the series. On a recent episode of his national college football show "The Hard Count", J.D. Pickell of On3 argued that the Trojans and Irish must continue to play each other every year, regardless of the potential consequences. "This is an incredibly short-sighted approach to say, 'well, it might hurt out chances of making the playoff, so therefore we're gonna take a step back,'" Pickell said. "That's not what this is about. "When you go to USC, part of that whole deal is you are playing Notre Dame . . . that's how this thing works. That's college football. There are certain things that are just part of the equation when you sign up to go to a certain place. "I think [USC's] brand in itself is phenomenal. Same thing for Notre Dame . . . but I think that when you play your rival—especially with a rivalry of this stature—you get more juice when you play Notre Dame. You get more juice when you play USC." Pickell makes a valid point. USC and Notre Dame have been playing each other for almost 100 years. The rivalry is woven into the fabric of what makes college football what it is. The expanded playoff, on the other hand, has been around for less than 12 months. To end a century-old rivalry over concerns about a new postseason system goes against everything that college football fans love about the sport. Hopefully, the two schools will see the light, and they will be able to work out a long-term extension to keep the series going beyond next year.
