Atletico Madrid 'identify France international as alternative to Andy Robertson' if they fail to land Liverpool veteran this summer
Atletico Madrid have identified Aston Villa 's Lucas Digne as a potential alternative to Andy Robertson if they fail to sign the Liverpool defender, according to a report.
The Spanish side have been in talks with AC Milan for Theo Hernandez but, after failing to reach agreement, have switched to Robertson, mindful that he could slip down the pecking order when Liverpool sign Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth.
Atletico have yet to make a formal approach to Liverpool but have been informed that Robertson is interested in talking to them.
According to The Times, Digne, who like Robertson has one year left on his contract, has been identified as a potential alternative if they cannot get a deal for the Scotland captain over the line.
The French is said to have an admirer in head coach Diego Simeone, who values his ability to attack and defend.
The 31-year-old has previously played in LaLiga, spending two years with Barcelona before moving to Everton in 2018. He had been in the West Midlands since January 2022.
Robertson, who saw close friend Trent Alexander-Arnold make his move to Atletico's rivals Real last week, is yet to agree a new deal despite talks.
Asked about his future, Robertson said: 'I'm not getting any younger - I can't change my age - but I still believe I've got a lot to give.
'We've had good discussions, me and the club, but what the future holds, I'm not sure.'
Recently, Robertson also appeared to show he was eager to fight for his spot at Liverpool during an interview with Sky Sports.
'I think at any big club you always have to keep moving, the club always moves forward and I think you've also seen other big clubs like Manchester City have been very active early doors in the window,' he said.
'I know we've only got Jeremie Frimpong through the door so far but it looks as though one or two others are going to be close from what we can see on Sky Sports News.
'But just now we're at the top, we obviously won the league, and it's important that the club keeps improving and finding ways to do that.
He went on: 'The club have identified certain positions where they want to get new blood in, it looks like players we're linked to are all younger players and they are all exciting players as well.
'So when you play for a big club like Liverpool you expect challenges, you expect competition and I have always faced that, everyone here has faced that in their own positions and I expect nothing less.
'I want the club to be ambitious, they are doing that and wherever we fit into that, if we're happy with our role, we stay and we do it and if not then I am sure there will be a few out the door as well.

Liverpool owners FSG considering massive deal with Michael Edwards involved
FSG, the owners of Liverpool, could gollow the example of some other Premier League clubs' ownership groups and invest in another club in one of Europe's big five leagues Liverpool owners FSG are considering a swoop to buy La Liga club Getafe. The Boston-based group are looking to build a multi-club profile in football with Michael Edwards a key man in the project. The Reds are now assessing the Madrid-based club after looking at Bordeaux and Malaga in the past. The club is currently improving their Estadio Coliseum ground and could be open to selling in the near future. A spokesperson for FSG said: 'FSG routinely engages in conversations and evaluates opportunities across global sports, a common process to assess ventures that align with the organisation's strategic priorities.' Liverpool could use relationships with other clubs to help with the development of players in the way Manchester City has with City Football Group, which owns numerous clubs around the world. How far the Reds will cast their net is unknown at this stage but it is clear they are looking to start with one club and the La Liga outfit, who finished 13th last season, are of serious interest. Edwards' involvement comes more than a year after he returned to Anfield. The former sporting director came back as chief executive officer of football, linking up with the club's current sporting director Richard Hughes. "It was vital for me that, if I did return, it had to be with renewed vigour and energy. In practice, this means having fresh challenges and opportunities," Edwards said in 2024 when his return was confirmed "As such, one of the biggest factors in my decision is the commitment to acquire and oversee an additional club, growing this area of their organisation. I believe that to remain competitive, investment and expansion of the current football portfolio is necessary. Getafe only won promotion to La Liga for the first time in 2004, but have been near ever-presents since. They were relegated in 2016 but bounced straight back, and haven't finished lower than 15th since climbing back to the top flight. The club welcomed Pepe Bordalas back for a second spell as manager in 2023. finishing 12th in the 2023-24 season and 13th last term. They also reached the quarter-finals of last season's Copa Del Rey, losing to Atletico Madrid. If Liverpool's owners complete a deal for Getafe, they would join a number of Premier League rivals with multi-club ownership interests. Chelsea owners BlueCo added French side Strasbourg to their portfolio in 2023, while City Football Group have several clubs across multiple continents, including Manchester City, Girona and New York City FC. FSG already own teams in other sports, and owned the Boston Red Sox before completing their Liverpool takeover. They agreed to buy the Premier League club from previous owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett back in 2010. Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Sadio Mane's three-word reply to Prem transfer after Man Utd contract agreement
Liverpool icon Sadio Mane once opened up about his near move to Manchester United and years later teased a return to the Premier League following interest from another club Sadio Mane once said 'never say never' to the idea of joining Newcastle. The Liverpool legend, now playing for Al-Nassr, also admitted previously that he agreed a contract with Manchester United but opted for their Merseyside rivals instead. Mane, now 33, became a legend at Anfield following his £34million move from Southampton in 2016, scoring 120 goals and providing 46 assists during his six-year stint. He played a crucial role in Jurgen Klopp's successful rebuild, helping the Reds win the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup. His departure to Bayern Munich for an initial £27m in 2022 was undoubtedly a loss for the English top flight. But the door opened for his return less than 12 months later. The Senegalese icon's time in Germany was marred by an injury before the Qatar 2022 World Cup and a reported dressing room fight with team-mate Leroy Sane. It was therefore unsurprising that he was shown the exit door at the end of the season. It was during that uncertain period that he met Martin Callanan, a Conservative life peer in the House of Lords who is originally from Newcastle. Callahan was attending an EITI International conference in Mane's native Senegal. He encouraged Mane to join the Magpies, saying in a later tweet: 'I'm in Senegal speaking at the EITI conference. Honoured to meet Sadio Mane in the hotel. I couldn't resist asking him about coming to Newcastle next season. His enigmatic reply: 'Never say never!'" It's unclear whether Mane was merely being courteous or if Newcastle were serious contenders to secure his signature, but he didn't end up at St James Park. Instead, he joined Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr, where he's contributed to 62 goals in 93 matches. While many who have made similar moves to the Middle East have been accused of chasing money, that record suggests Mane's far from just going through the motions. And his response to Callahan implies a Premier League return may not be completely off the cards, unlike most who are spending the twilight years of their career on Saudi shores. However, considering his age and the fact that there's still a year left on his contract, the likelihood of a move to Tyneside can probably be categorised in the "never" bracket now. While he might still view the switch as desirable, it's hard to imagine the feeling being mutual - though he is being rumoured with an exit from Al-Nassr this summer. Mane is no stranger to a sudden change in transfer plans. Before joining Liverpool, he was all set to head to Old Trafford until a phone call from Klopp turned his head. Mane recalled in an interview with the Telegraph: "I was really close to going to Manchester United. I had the contract there. I had it all agreed. It was all ready, but instead, I thought, 'No, I want to go to Liverpool.' "I was convinced to go with Klopp's project. I still remember the first time I got the call from Klopp. He said, 'We have a big project at Liverpool and I want you to be part of it.'"
