New Map Shows What Ice-Free Antarctica Looks Like
Millions of years ago, the Antarctic continent was a lush jungle. Millions of years from now, it may be jungle again.
But for all of human history, Antarctica has been ice-covered and desolate. Explorers struggled to survive, and researchers struggled to retrieve the few accessible geological samples, hoping to glimpse what lay under the ice.
Now, a new model allows us to peel back the frozen white layers and see the land beneath.
Called Bedmap3, the model is the most detailed and accurate map of the Antarctic continent ever completed. An International scientific team led by the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) used over 60 years of information gathered by plane, ship, satellite, and even dogsled. In total, they integrated 82 million data points, double the amount used in Bedmap2, the previous generation. To look beneath the 27 million cubic kilometers of ice, researchers used radar, sound waves, and gravity measurements.
This leap forward is thanks to recent surveys in under-explored regions of East Antarctica, including the South Polar area.
The map shows the location and size of the massive ice sheets based on 277 ice surveys over the past 60 years. The BAS team, led by glaciologist Hanish Pritchard, estimates a mean ice thickness of 1,948m. The area covered by ice is 13.63 million square kilometers, almost twice the size of Australia.
The real importance of Bedmap3 is that it will improve predictions of ice loss and sea level rise. Pritchard says the map will help researchers "investigate how the ice will flow across the continent as temperatures rise."
Already, the secrets of the continent's rocky underpinning have provided a worrying hint at Antarctica's future. Much of the ice rests on bedrock below sea level. This ice can melt quickly thanks to incursions of warm ocean water. Thanks to this latest research, if it melts, we know it would raise sea levels by 58m.
Bedmap3 is a fascinating glimpse into a hidden world. But it's also a grave reminder of how that buried land is quickly rising to the surface.

NASA pioneer Dr. Stanley Sander dies at the age of 80

Photo courtesy of NASA June 5 (UPI) -- One of NASA's top ozone depletion and air pollution scientists, credited with enhancing local air pollution measurement tools and dozens of other climate related research advancements, has died at the age of 80. Dr. Stanley Sander was broadly recognized for his work on research on atmospheric chemistry at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory where he started his career in 1971. "Stan made foundational contributions to our understanding of stratospheric ozone depletion, tropospheric air pollution, and climate science related greenhouse gases," a statement from NASA about his death said. Sander's work on laboratory measurements was used to help other scientists reach consensus on a host of environmental issues, including developing tools to measure air quality and establish environmental policies. He also studied the chemistry of methane on Mars, halogen gases on Venus and hydrocarbons in Titan's atmosphere. "Stan's scientific output was vast," the NASA statement continued. "He authored over 180 peer-reviewed publications, beginning with his 1976 paper on sulfur dioxide oxidation. His work spans major aspects of atmospheric chemistry -- from chlorine, bromine, and nitrogen oxides to sulfur compounds and peroxides." NASA said Sander's influence went beyond the hard sciences and into mentorship of up-and-coming scientists. He led 40 post-doctoral students, more than two dozen graduate students and undergraduate students in their pursuits of understanding atmospheric chemistry. "Those of us lucky enough to be fostered by Stand in this capacity will also remember his kindness first approach and steadfast resolve in the face of challenges," the release said. Sander was awarded several meritorious achievement awards, including two NASA Exceptional Achievement Medals and a NASA Exceptional Service Medal.

Scientists make chilling discovery hidden deep within centuries-old ice cores: 'We need to raise the alarm'
A group of scientists is in a race against time in the Arctic. Valuable climate data is at risk of disappearing as our overheating planet melts glacier ice. Our warming world is melting glaciers and ice sheets, and crucial climate data is vanishing along with them, reported Carbon Brief. A team of scientists is studying the Blombstrandbreen glacier, located approximately halfway between mainland Norway and the North Pole, to determine the degree of damage caused by meltwater penetrating deep into the ice. "If you imagine an ice core like a book containing important information, what is happening is almost like someone has spilled a cup of tea all over the pages," Dorothea Moser, a British Antarctic Survey scientist, told Carbon Brief. "The melting of ice cores is a big issue and we need to raise the alarm — but we also can't give up on them completely yet." The ice cores that are extracted from glaciers such as Blombstrandbreen hold vital information that helps scientists reconstruct past climate conditions. Air bubbles trapped inside the ice can provide scientists with a glimpse into the past, as the gases present when the ice formed are stored within them. Scientists can glean valuable information from this type of "proxy data." "Paleoclimatologists gather proxy data from natural recorders of climate variability such as corals, pollen, ice cores, tree rings, caves, pack rat middens, ocean and lake sediments, and historical data," according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. "By analyzing records taken from these and other proxy sources, scientists can extend our understanding of climate far beyond the instrumental record." The Arctic is warming at a rate nearly four times faster than Earth's average. "Arctic amplification" means the region's ice is rapidly melting and putting crucial climate data at risk of being lost forever. On the opposite side of the Earth, scientists say some of Antarctica's glaciers may have entered a phase of irreversible melting.
