Elon Musk's father, Errol Musk, opens up on his battle against prostate cancer
Credit: X
For the first time, Errol Musk, father of billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, has spoken about his prostate cancer diagnosis. The retired engineer from Cape Town, South Africa, shared his experience while supporting the Mail's campaign for a national screening programme.
Errol, 79, had no symptoms of prostate cancer when doctors discovered it during routine blood tests for an unrelated condition. Speaking in England, he told the Mail: 'I feel lucky to be alive and feel fortunate my tumour was caught early, while it was still treatable - but there are so many men who are not so fortunate.'
Recounting the diagnosis
Errol said his elevated prostate specific antigen (PSA) level was first flagged in February last year during a routine checkup following open-heart surgery.
'A few years ago, I went for a flying medical and the doctor rushed me to a cardiologist, and I had an open-heart operation as a result of that,' he said. 'I keep going back for checkups and so on. I'm all right, I had a valve repair, replacement, in my heart.''But when I went for my checkup at the beginning of last year, they said to me, with the many blood tests they do, that I had a raised PSA.
Not particularly raised, but it was raised.'

In a video interview shared exclusively with the Mail by his friend Avi Lasarow, Errol recalled the blunt manner of his diagnosis. 'I always thought when you go into see a doctor and he's going to tell you that you have cancer, that he first tells you to sit down, and maybe offers you a cup of tea and asks you, if you're comfortable, if you'd like a cushion? They don't do that. You've barely sat down on a hard bench chair, and they've said: 'You have cancer!''
Undergoing surgery and recovery
Errol recounted the discussion with his doctor: 'After seeing the urologist, he said to me I have cancer of the prostate.
I said: 'Well, what now, you know?' He said: 'Well, we can remove the prostate, and then we have to see what's left.' So, I agreed and I went for this operation and they removed my prostate and also all the lymph nodes on the right side, they teared that all out as well.'
'The biopsy showed that the prostate was carcinomas. It wasn't a question of leaving it. It was a case of stopping the cells from spreading. So, it was definitely the right decision in terms of maintaining my life.
They didn't suggest to me that there was an alternative. They said you must have this removed. And as I've been going back, I don't seem to have a problem at this point.'
Errol had the operation in July 2024, cancelling a planned overseas trip. Around that time, Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt, and Elon Musk publicly endorsed Trump for president.
Sharing the news with Elon Musk
Errol said he broke the news to his son via email. Elon's reply: 'Sorry, dad - whatever it costs, I'll pay.'Recovery
was challenging for Errol. 'For the first six weeks, I actually felt pretty awful. You feel no strength. Your body feels weak, your legs weak, you just feel old, and you don't feel very good. The doctor said to me it would take 12 months after the operation before I felt all right. But I started to feel ok after three months.
I'm much better now, and I'm looking forward to getting to the 12 months.'
Looking ahead, Errol plans to launch Musk Health Systems, a DNA testing service focusing on longevity and screening for genetic predispositions to illnesses such as prostate and breast cancer. DNA testing, he believes, can guide treatment decisions and help relatives identify their own risks.

Smelling the impossible: How scientists are bottling the lost scents of extinct flowers
Imagine spritzing on a fragrance that no living human has ever smelled—a scent lost to time, reborn through the marvels of modern science. This is not science fiction, but the bold reality crafted by Future Society , a US-based biotech fragrance company that's turning the impossible into a wearable experience. The Jurassic Park of Perfume Partnering with Harvard University Herbaria , which houses over five million plant specimens, Future Society has sequenced the DNA of plants extinct for more than a century and a half. Using fragments from these long-lost blooms, their team has managed to reconstruct six unique perfumes—each a tribute to a vanished floral world. Take orbexilum stipulatum , for example—a flowering herb that last bloomed in 1881 on Rock Island in the Ohio River. Its extinction followed the disappearance of buffalo, which once spread its seeds, and was sealed when dams flooded its habitat. Now, thanks to DNA extracted from preserved specimens, its scent—green, lush, and tinged with watery notes—has been reimagined for the modern nose. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Play War Thunder now for free War Thunder Play Now Undo 'We utilized this technology… to offer a glimpse into the fragrances that these extinct flowers may have produced,' said Jasmina Aganovic , CEO of Future Society. 'Our goal was to create scents that have never been experienced before, fragrances that were previously unattainable.' The process is part genealogy, part olfactory detective work: DNA is extracted, genes linked to scent molecules are identified, and then perfumers interpret the data, blending natural, synthetic, and bioengineered notes. Aganovic is clear: 'We are not fully reviving these flowers… The human connection to our environment cannot be replicated or easily restored'. Yet, with each bottle, Future Society invites us to time-travel through scent—reminding us that, with enough curiosity and ingenuity, even the fragrances of the extinct can bloom again. Live Events The resulting fragrances are described as 'tributes' rather than exact replicas. Each is a creative leap—a blend of what science reveals and what artistry imagines. Perfumer Olivia Jan , for instance, designed 'Grassland Opera' to evoke the lush, wet environment where orbexilum once thrived. Others, like 'Solar Canopy' and 'Invisible Woods,' draw on extinct flowers from South Africa and India, layering earthy, herbal, and fruity notes to tell the story of loss and rediscovery.

Haribo recalls sweets in Netherlands after cannabis found
Representative AI image On Thursday, the German-based candymaker Haribo recalled its Happy Cola F!ZZ sweets in the Netherlands after cannabis was found in at least three bags containing the product. The recall only applies to 1-kilogram (2.2-pound) bags sold in the Netherlands. Haribo has asked customers to return Happy Cola F!ZZ candies with a best-before date (BBD) of January 2026 and the product code L341-4002307906 for a refund. Despite the low number of products found to contain cannabis, the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) said Haribo had issued a complete batch recall as a precaution. "There are bags in circulation with sweets that can lead to health complaints, such as dizziness, when consumed," NVWA spokesperson Saida Ahyad said. "The police reported this to the NVWA after several people, both children and adults, became ill after eating the cola bottles," Ahyad said. "Do not eat the sweets," Ahyad added. Haribo working with Dutch authorities Haribo said it was actively working with authorities to find out how the cannabis made its way into the company's products. "The safety of our consumers is our highest priority, and Haribo takes this incident very seriously," Haribo's vice president of marketing, Patrick Tax, told the AFP news agency. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Idols - Handmade Brass Statues for Home & Gifting Luxeartisanship Buy Now Undo "This is a live issue and we are working closely with the Dutch authorities to support their investigation and establish the facts around the contamination," Tax said. 'Life-threatening' bacteria found in invasive tick for first time in US. Know about human monocytic ehrlichiosis
A new report shows the first evidence in the United States of the invasive longhorned tick with Ehrlichia chaffeensis , a potentially life-threatening pathogen, was found in recent years in Connecticut. As outdoor activities ramp up with the approach of summer, Connecticut officials announced Tuesday that they have confirmed the first US case of the invasive longhorned tick carrying Ehrlichia chaffeensis, a bacterium that can cause a potentially fatal illness, according to New York Post. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said human monocytic ehrlichiosis , or HME, usually spreads by the lone star tick, which is native to the US and found throughout most of the eastern, southeastern, and south-central parts of the country. HME disease initially causes symptoms such as sudden high fever, chills and fatigue a few weeks after an infection, according to officials with the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station (CAES). Symptoms may progress to include symptoms such as nausea, confusion and, ultimately, kidney failure and respiratory complications. However, the recent case of a tick carrying Ehrlichia chaffeensis, the bacteria behind HME, in Connecticut involved the longhorned tick, a tick species native to eastern Asia. Live Events ALSO READ: 'Abused, dragged and choked': Sean Diddy forced his ex into freak-offs, threatened to leak tapes and ruin her career Officials stated that this species plays a major role in carrying the bacteria and spreading HME, especially as it is expected to expand across the eastern United States. They explained that its rapid spread is largely due to its ability to reproduce without a male and its broad, unrestricted feeding habits. 'The first fully engorged human-parasitizing longhorned tick specimen was recorded by the CAES in 2018 from Fairfield, Connecticut, and the first populations of the tick were reported from this county in 2020,' said Dr. Goudarz Molaei, director of the CAES Passive Tick and Tick-Borne Disease Surveillance Program. ALSO READ: Popular ice cream chain to close 500 stores in US amid bankruptcy proceedings Since then, longhorned tick populations have spread across several towns in Fairfield and New Haven Counties. Isolated specimens have also been found in New London and other areas. Officials have raised concerns about the species' ability to expand its range and its potential to carry pathogens that pose risks to the health of humans, pets, and other animals. They emphasized that longhorned ticks in the U.S. have been linked to the transmission of various pathogens, including those responsible for Lyme disease.
