North-east Delhi riots case: repeated judicial reshuffles delay trial
NEW DELHI Five years after the north-east Delhi riots of 2020, which left 53 dead and over 700 injured, the trial in the 'larger conspiracy' case will begin afresh due to a recent judicial reshuffle in the Capital's lower courts. On June 2, the case was listed for arguments on charges. The court was informed that the Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) had completed his submissions, and five accused had also argued on the point of charge. However, the matter will now restart under Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Lalit Kumar, following the transfer of ASJ Sameer Bajpai.The latest reshuffle, involving the transfer of 135 judges, marks another setback in one of Delhi's most high-profile trials. 'Since the court has been transferred, the prosecution and the accused persons and their counsels seek some time to consult with each other regarding the time frame to address the arguments,' said ASJ Kumar, while directing all parties to submittheir time estimates for arguments by June 6. Originally filed by Delhi Police's Special Cell in 2020, the case invokes provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), among others. Key accused include Tahir Hussain, student activists Umar Khalid, Khalid Saifi, Ishrat Jahan, Meeran Haider, Gulfisha Fatima, Shifa-Ur-Rehman, Asif Iqbal Tanha, Shadab Ahmed, Tasleem Ahmed, Saleem Malik, Mohd. Saleem Khan, Athar Khan, Safoora Zargar, Sharjeel Imam, Faizan Khan, and Natasha Narwal, among others. After months of delay in the probe, the chargesheetwas filed in June 2023, and arguments began in 2024 before Judge Bajpai. Prior to him, the case was heard for months by ASJ Amitabh Rawat, who was transferred last year. With Judge Kumar now assigned to the case, both prosecution and defence teams are expected to resubmit their argument timelines and reconvene on June 6. The court is likely to push for a time-bound hearing to avoid delays.

Burglar who invested 10L, disguised as woman held
Mumbai: A 44-year-old man who amassed enough wealth through committing burglaries to be able to invest in properties has been arrested by Malad Police. Ranjit Kumar Singh alias Munna, the accused, would take up a disguise and dress up as a woman before he set out for committing crimes Police have recovered a machine in which he would melt the stolen gold and silver ornaments before selling them. On March 17, the Malad Police had received a complaint about a break-in at a house located near NL School. The burglar had scaled up a floor and entered the house through the window. He robbed cash and ornaments worth Rs 4.5 lakh. A team supervised by DCP Anand Bhoite, ACP Hemant Sawant and senior inspector Vijaykumar Panhalkar and comprising inspector Sanjay Bedwal and detection officer Tushar Sukhdeve, made inquiries in the neighbourhood and analysed CCTV footage. On tracing Singh and questioning him, they learnt that he was involved in eight break-ins in the past three months at Borivli, Kandiali, Malad West and Dindoshi. He had never been arrested earlier for any of the crimes. Singh was a resident of Kharodi village in Malad and a native of Bihar. Police discovered that Singh had paid an individual Rs 10 lakh to invest in a plot of land in Bihar and purchased a house for Rs 6 lakh in Malwani from the ill-gotten wealth. tnn

2020 Riots: Delhi Court To Rehear Arguments In UAPA Case After Judicial Transfers
New Delhi: A Delhi court will hear fresh arguments on charges in the northeast Delhi riots larger conspiracy case following transfer of judges. Additional sessions judge Lalit Kumar of Karkardooma court, in his June 2 order, stated that the counsel appearing for the accused and the prosecution must now furnish a time frame and the manner in which they would address arguments. The special public prosecutor informed the court that the prosecution has already completed its arguments, and even five accused persons have completed their arguments on the point of charge. "This court considers it fit that a considerable time has already lapsed, and therefore, arguments on the point of charge have to be expedited. Since the court has been transferred, the prosecution and the accused persons and their counsels seek some time to consult with each other regarding the time frame to address the arguments," the judge said. The FIR in the case was registered in 2020 by Delhi Police's Special Cell. Arguments on charge began last year and were being heard by additional sessions judge Sameer Bajpai. However, an administrative order was published by Delhi High Court on May 30, notifying the transfer of 135 judges, including Bajpai. This new development means that the prosecution will again take Kumar through all the relevant documents, including the 17,000-page chargesheet. The arguments will be reheard by Kumar. The accused in the case are Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam, Safoora Zargar, Natasha Narwal, Asif Iqbal Tanha, Tahir Hussain, Khalid Saifi, Isharat Jahan, Meeran Haider, Gulfisha Fatima, Shifa-Ur-Rehman, Shadab Ahmed, Tasleem Ahmed, Saleem Malik, Mohd Saleem Khan, Athar Khan and Faizan Khan. Delhi Police has invoked stringent provisions of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act against them. Most of the accused have been in jail for more than five years.
