Leader 'instrumental' in growth of wildlife group
A conservation group leader who has been "instrumental" in ensuing the growth of the organisation is moving on after five years in the post.
Manx Wildlife Trust chief executive Leigh Morris will leave the post in May to take on the role of Director of International Nature and Climate at the Wildlife Trusts.
Mr Morris, who took up the post in September 2019, said he was leaving with a "sense of pride " in what had been accomplished and "a deep confidence in the team".
His new role, which works with an association of 46 local trusts including the Isle of Man, aims to bridge the gap between local conservation efforts and global environmental challenges.
He said the last five years had been "a wonderful chapter of my life", and he was "particularly proud" of the work carried out during the group's 50th anniversary in 2023 and its receipt of the King's Award for Voluntary Service.
"Though I will be embarking on a new chapter, I know that my connection to MWT and the Isle of Man is far from over," he added.
A spokesman for the Manx Wildlife Trust said that Mr Morris had been "instrumental" in expanding the charity's work and "ensuring its growth".
He would continue to be involved in the Inter-island Environment Meeting, which will be hosted on the Isle of Man for the first time in September.

New visitor hub at Laxey Wheel gets approval
Plans to demolish the existing entrance kiosk and replace it with a modern visitor hub at a Victorian water wheel have been approved. The larger visitor hub at the Laxey Wheel is set to be used to exhibit the history of the site and provide a sheltered space for groups of visitors. Planning committee member Peter Whiteway said the new hub would be "functional" and although it "could be prettier" it would serve the purpose needed. In its application, Manx National Heritage argued the current facility, which was designed for one person rather than the current three-person team, was "totally inadequate" and offered "cramped and cold" conditions. The existing kiosk also "offers a very poor visitor experience" as there was "no internal space" to provide information or for a retail area, rendering it "not fit for purpose". Built in 1854, the 72ft (22m) diameter wheel is the largest working waterwheel of its kind in the world. Known as the Lady Isabella, the Victorian wheel was originally used in mining. Recommending the plans for approval, the planning officer's report said the proposal would not impact the appearance of the conservation area, and a modern development could provide a "good distinction between new and old". In his submission to the committee, clerk of Garff Commissioners Martin Royle said some members of the local authority, which had objected to the proposals, had had difficulty with the design of the structure. But he said the development could lead to more people discovering the landmark. Last year, Manx National Heritage withdrew proposals for a visitor centre at the sire after backlash over its appearance. Key changes under the revised scheme were the colour and location of the building. Committee member Helen Hughes said she was "unsure about the design" although she understood staff needed more space. She said while it was an "improvement" on the original proposal it still looked like a portable cabin, but fellow committee member Adele Bettridge noted that there were no toilets within the facility. The committee was told Manx National Heritage said the lifespan of the facility would be 15 to 20 years. The plans were approved with six member in favour and one against. Lyft driver taken hostage in lobby of sheriff's office
A sheriff's office in Georgia said a hostage situation happened far closer to home than normal, our sister station, WSB-TV, reported. According to the sheriff's office, David Christopher Morris, of Dawsonville, was holding a knife to a man said to be his Lyft driver. When the driver and Morris got to the office, Morris held him at knifepoint and walked into the building, demanding to speak to Johnson, WSB reported. While waiting for Johnson to arrive, SWAT deputies established a secure perimeter, according to officials. After speaking for a while, Morris released the hostage and surrendered the weapon without further incident. The Lyft driver sustained minor injuries and was treated by Dawson County Fire and Emergency Services, the sheriff's office said. Morris was taken into custody and is in custody at the Dawson County Detention Center. 'We're grateful this situation ended without further harm to the victim, our deputies, or the suspect. It is an honor to work for a strong leader who leads calmly by example, even in the face of danger‚" Dawson County Sheriff's Public Information Officer Sgt. Matthew Blackstock said in a statement.
