Everything changed for Astros utility man Mauricio Dubón the second he found out he was going to be a father. The 30-year-old has gained new purpose on and off the pitch since the birth of his son Luciano on November 30.
No longer is the focus on a tough night at the plate – instead, it's Luciano smiling back at him at home and telling him what's important. Throughout an entire season, Dubón said,
'You're not playing for yourself anymore'
. So, imagine a person saying,
"You are playing for somebody else."
Mauricio Dubón's first Father's Day will be one to remember
That is a milestone Dubón is celebrating in a big way. He will wear custom gear for Sunday's game against the Twins at Daikin Park, including a belt and a pair of Air Jordan cleats honoring his family. The belt even has the names of his wife, Nancy, his son Luciano, and his dogs Marcelo and Cash on it. Inside, it's affixed with Luciano's birth certificate footprints, and a sweet Spanish inscription –
'El mejor papi! Te amamos.
' ('The best daddy. We love you.')
The right toe of each cleat displays the name of Luciano, the family's dog who died recently, while the left cleat lists the names of Marcelo and Cash. To add some personality, Dubón included a cigar and a glass of Scotch, both of which are part of his off-the-field guilty pleasures on each cleat.
Mauricio Dubón says being a dad changed how he plays and how he thinks
Fatherhood has brought more than just stylish cleats for Dubón — it's shifted his mindset into playing. He says
, "You're not just playing for yourself anymore'.

The player, now 30, says the emotional burden of fatherhood has him more present, more focused, and more at peace with the crests and troughs of life. What gives him happiness, he says, is the latter, when he walks in and Luciano lights up when he sees his dad, whether it be going hitless or contributing to the Astros' victory.
'It's different, man,'
Dubón smiled.
'I'm just trying to be good for him.'

Panthers vs Oilers: Panthers beat Oilers 5-2 in Game 5, inch closer to 2nd successive Stanley Cup title

Brad Marchand netted two goals, while Sam Bennett recorded his 15th goal of the playoffs, leading the Florida Panthers to a 5-2 victory against the Edmonton Oilers in Game 5 on Saturday night in Edmonton, bringing them closer to their second consecutive Stanley Cup championship. The Panthers' remarkable road record in these playoffs improved to 10-3. They now have the opportunity to secure the Cup at home in Sunrise during Game 6 on Tuesday night. — NHL (@NHL) by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Lookup Your Name. Sergei Bobrovsky demonstrated solid performance, saving 19 of 21 shots, supported by effective defensive play that restricted the Oilers' movement. The offensive contributions came from Marchand, Bennett and Sam Reinhart . Marchand achieved a notable milestone, joining Mario Lemieux as the only players in 50 years to score five-plus goals in multiple finals, while accumulating 13 career final goals, the highest among current players. Live Events — NHL (@NHL) Connor McDavid scored his first goal of the series after the Oilers fell 3-0 behind. Reinhart responded 46 seconds afterwards, restoring Panthers' three-goal advantage. Corey Perry's goal with 3:13 remaining proved insufficient. Eetu Luostarinen confirmed the victory with an empty-net goal at 1:19, quietening the home supporters. The Oilers' power play was unsuccessful in three attempts, as Panthers' aggressive penalty kill disrupted McDavid, Leon Draisaitl and their primary unit's usual effectiveness. Calvin Pickard experienced his first defeat in eight starts this spring, conceding four goals from 18 shots. He replaced Stuart Skinner after winning Game 4 as a substitute, moving his record to 7-1 from 7-0.

WTC Final: Curse lifted as South Africa can afford to forget the history of near misses

South Africa's captain Temba Bavuma holds the winner's trophy and celebrates with teammates (AP Photo/Kirsty Wigglesworth) As the cameras panned to the Lord's balcony, the entire South African team was celebrating, barring one man, Temba Bavuma . The Black captain of the South African Test team — a team once regarded as a prized possession of the whites, in a nation divided by colour had his face in his palms. He was trying to soak in the moment. He may not have visualised this in his wildest dreams when he was growing up as a cricketer on the outskirts of Cape Town. The skipper could easily have walked out of the field on Friday evening with a hamstring pull, but he didn't. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Years down the line, when this victory will be discussed, Aiden Markram 's name will keep cropping up for what he did with the bat in a difficult chase. But all those who endured the roller-coaster of the WTC final for four days will remember Bavuma's 134-ball vigil on virtually one leg. 04:21 Lobo Predicted It, Again: South Africa's Historic WTC Win vs Australia Remember, Bavuma probably wasn't everyone's No. 1 choice as South Africa captain, just as Siya Kolisi wasn't when the Springboks the pride of white South Africa in those years of Apartheid won the 2019 Rugby World Cup. Kolisi didn't stop there, he went on to join a select group of rugby captains to win the World Cup back-to-back in 2023. These triumphs, the first being the 1995 Rugby World Cup immortalized by the 2009 Clint Eastwood film Invictus, in which Morgan Freeman played Nelson Mandela — have meant way more than just a win on the sports field. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Ayacucho: Ecuatorianos: generen un segundo ingreso con Amazon CFD. While Mandela used rugby as a unification tool in a country torn by racism, success on the cricket pitch was always considered a given for a nation blessed with incredible talent. Just before they got banned from international cricket, an all-white South African team consisting of the likes of Mike Procter, Barry Richards and Peter Pollock had whitewashed a powerful Australia 4-0. On their return on Nov 10, 1991 at Eden Gardens Kolkata in an ODI against India, the world was wowed by the magnificent Allan Donald. Come every World Cup, South Africa start as one of the favourites, till something other-wordly struck. While in 1992 it was the rain-rule that turned a chase of 22 runs off 13 balls to a bizarre 22 runs off one ball due to a five-minute spell of rain, in 1996 it was a brilliant Brian Lara innings in the quarters. In 1999, Hansie Cronje's South Africa were the best team for most parts of the tournament till the magic of Shane Warne and a last-over choke by Lance Klusener and Donald finished a dream. The choker's tag fell firmly on the South Africans and India were the beneficiaries just about a year ago in Barbados. Needing 30 off 30 in the T20 World Cup final, a South African team that hadn't put a foot wrong till then in the tournament, messed it up as Suryakumar Yadav's catch of the century in the last over won Rohit Sharma's boys the title. Long after that game was over, as India celebrated, the South Africans didn't leave the ground. One could see them sitting in their balcony, staring at India's moment of triumph. Probably they were internalizing the hurt promising themselves that there will be a rainbow at the end of the tunnel. At a sun-soaked Lord's on Saturday, however, they did keep their tryst with destiny

Mercedes' George Russell Claims Pole For Canadian Grand Prix

Mercedes' George Russell grabbed a dazzling pole position and then enjoyed cracking a joke at rival Max Verstappen's expense on Saturday after clocking a sensational lap in qualifying for Sunday's Canadian Grand Prix. The 27-year-old Briton was delighted with what he described as "one of the most exhilarating laps of my life" and said, when asked about the prospect of starting alongside Red Bull's four-time champion, that he had "a few more penalty points to play with". His light-hearted jibe referred to his verbal rivalry with Verstappen since last season and their recent clash at the Spanish Grand Prix -- where the Dutchman rammed into Russell's car in the closing stages. Verstappen was handed a timed penalty that dropped him to 10th and also given three points on his drivers' super-licence, taking him to a total of 11 and within one point of a ban if he commits any further misdemeanors. Fans in the capacity crowd at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve roared their approval as Russell warmed to his theme after clocking the only sub 1.11 lap of the weekend to date. "We're mates, so it's all good," insisted Russell, despite his tense and often strained relationship with Verstappen who, in Barcelona, said "give him some tissues" after their clash. "But I've got a few more points on my license to play with so, yeah, let's see," Russell said. It may have been good-natured fun, but it was also a reminder to Verstappen that he cannot risk repeating his "red mist" aggression and a possible race ban on Sunday. Russell captured his first pole this year at the end of a thrilling session. Russell clocked a best lap in one minute and 10.899 seconds to outpace Verstappen by 0.160 seconds. "On my steering wheel, you've got the delta and I just saw every corner that I was just going one-tenth quicker and I got into the last corner and I was six-tenths off so I knew the lap was mighty," Russell said. "Crossing the line and seeing we were P1 was a real surprise, but I was so chuffed with it. It was probably one of the most exhilarating laps of my life, an awesome experience in front of this amazing crowd." Verstappen, who is third in this year's drivers' title race behind the McLaren pair Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, shook hands with Russell to congratulate him, but will harbour hopes of claiming an unprecedented fourth consecutive Canadian win. Last year, Russell led from pole for 20 laps before pitting to hand the lead to Norris for five laps until he also pitted. Verstappen then took control to win ahead of Norris with Russell coming home third. "I'm very happy with what we have achieved to be on the front row," said Verstappen, having claimed Red Bull's 200th front row start. "Tomorrow, we can have a solid race. We did the right thing with the tyres." 'Childish, annoying' Asked about starting alongside Russell, the champion refused to comment, showing real irritation about the speculation on penalty points and bans. "I'm not talking about it anymore," he said, having already confirmed he would not change his aggressive style. "It's a waste of time to discuss this. It's so childish and it is really annoying." Russell's sixth career pole confirmed Mercedes' potential for success at the high-speed Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. The late-session drama lifted the oft-warring pair clear of championship leader Piastri and Kimi Antonelli in the second Mercedes. Seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton was fifth for Ferrari ahead of two-time champion Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin, Norris in the second McLaren and Charles Leclerc in the second Ferrari. Impressive rookie Isack Hadjar was ninth for Racing Bulls and Alex Albon 10th for Williams. Piastri, who leads Norris by 10 points in the title race after nine of this year's 24 races, was happy to recover form after a difficult practice. "To be honest, after how practice went, I am pretty happy," he said. "We chose to go with softs ... We wanted to keep it safe."
