Newport News Sheriff's Office set to host annual Shred Day
NEWPORT NEWS, Va.(WAVY)– The Newport News Sheriff's Office is gearing up for their annual Shred Day.
The drive-thru event it set to take place on Saturday, May 31, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Todd Stadium. Sheriff Gabriel 'Gabe' Morgan covers the cost of the three-hour drive-through service for the public to bring their personal papers for secure on-site shredding.
This is NNSO's way of helping citizens fight identity theft.

Franklin schools summer feeding program to start in late June
FRANKLIN, Va. (WAVY) – Franklin City Public Schools announced Friday, June 6, they will participate in the Summer Food Service Program, which provides meals to children under 18 regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, disability or age. The announcement further emphasizes that there will be no discrimination when it comes to food service and meals are on a first-come, first-serve basis. The meals will be given out at two different sites, S.P. Morton Elementary School and Franklin High School, and children are required to stay onsite while eating their meals. Both schools will be giving out meals Monday – Thursday, but times and dates differ for when the meals are available. Franklin High School Available dates June 23 – July 31, 2025; Aug. 4 – Aug. 14, 2025 Summer School Breakfast 7:45 a.m. – 8:30 a.m. Community Breakfast 8:45 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. Summer School Lunch 11:10 a.m. – 11:55 a.m. Community Lunch 12:00 p.m. – 12:45 p.m. S.P. Mother of missing Navy sailor in Norfolk speaks out as investigation continues
NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The investigation into missing Culinary Specialist Seaman Angelina Resendiz out of Naval Station Norfolk is still ongoing. Resendiz was initially reported missing on May 29, and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) states her disappearance from the Virginia naval station poses a credible threat to their health and safety. According to the Navy, Resendiz was last seen in her barracks at Naval Station Norfolk around 10 a.m. RELATED: 'Not like Angie at all:' Search continues for missing sailor from Naval Station Norfolk Nexstar's WAVY spoke with Resendiz's mother, Esmerelda Castle, who says she knew something was wrong when her daughter stopped reaching out to family members — something Resendiz was known to do every day. 'She talks to somebody every day,' Castle said. 'Her and my sister have a 400-day streak on Snapchat, and it all stopped on Thursday. She doesn't miss work.' Castle contacted the Navy and flew all the way to Hampton Roads, Virginia, from Texas to look for Resendiz, whom she describes as kind and compassionate. 'She's a very kind person. She's loving,' Castle said. 'She sees someone down, she's compassionate and encouraging and uplifting, and it's just natural for her. You see her and she's always smiling.' Esmerelda Castle shared the below photos of her daughter with WAVY. Castle said the last person who was seen with her daughter showed up to work on Monday, while Resendiz did not. 'I got here Thursday, and [investigators] still couldn't tell me anything,' Castle said. WAVY reached out to NCIS and received the following statement: 'NCIS urges anyone with information regarding her whereabouts to contact NCIS at 877-579-3648 or using the NCIS Tips app. Tips may be reported anonymously.'
