VICTORIA — British Columbia ministers are set to travel to Europe in a bid to diversify and strengthen markets for the province's tech industries, even as Premier David Eby continues an Asian trade mission.
The government says Minister of Jobs, Economic Development and Innovation Diana Gibson, and Minister of State for Trade Rick Glumac will be in Europe from June 9 until June 14.
Their delegation will be visiting three major tech conferences, in London, Amsterdam and Paris.
Gibson says in a statement that they'll meet investors, government officials and other stakeholders to build connections and showcase made-in-B.C. technology.
Gibson's ministry says 16 B.C. firms will be represented at the VivaTech event in Paris, while the province will operate a booth at the GreenTech Amsterdam horticulture technology trade show and connect with B.C. companies in Britain.
Eby's 10-day trade trip to Japan, Malaysia and South Korea continues until June 10, amid a push to diversify B.C.'s economy as the trade war with the United States threatens other markets.
The jobs ministry says the European Union was B.C.'s fifth-largest destination for exports in 2022.

Alberta resumes buying U.S. alcohol and gambling machines, months after pause meant to fight tariffs

Alberta is buying American alcohol and gambling machines again, three months after Premier Danielle Smith announced restrictions aimed at fighting back against U.S. tariffs. Service Alberta Minister Dale Nally says the move signals a 'renewed commitment to open and fair trade' with the United States. Smith said in March that the province would no longer buy U.S. alcohol and video lottery terminals, or sign contracts with American companies. That came a day after U.S. President Donald Trump slapped heavy tariffs on Canadian goods and energy. Nally says the decision to resume buying U.S. alcohol and gambling machines 'sets the stage for more constructive negotiations' ahead of a renewal of the Canada-U.S.-Mexico trade agreement. Ontario, Manitoba reach internal trade agreement, promise alcohol sales deal by end of June The minister says Albertans are encouraged to continue supporting local producers, even as more U.S. options return to store shelves. Nally said in April that the province was pausing its policy around procurement from U.S. companies 'in the spirit of diplomacy.' He said since the province's retaliatory measures were first announced in early March, the Trump administration had put a hold on further tariffs.

Vancouver Island woman to celebrate $1M lottery win with ‘biggest pizza' possible

Lottery winner Lee Ann Nahanee is seen in this image handed out by the BCLC. A new millionaire on Vancouver Island says her celebration plans after winning the lottery include cozying up on the couch with 'the biggest pizza' she can find. Parksville resident Lee Ann Nahanee won $1 million from the May 28 Lotto 6/49 draw, on a ticket bought at the Temple Food Store on Highway Island West. She found out while filling up at a gas station in Nanoose Bay. 'The retailer checked the ticket. She turned to me and said, 'you just won one million dollars!'' Nahanee told the B.C. Lottery Corporation. 'I don't even remember how I drove home; I was bawling. I kept saying 'just get home, just get home.'' She said she was most excited to share the news of her big win with her close friends she considers a 'second family,' and went out for breakfast with them to celebrate. 'They were so happy for me. They know how much this meant for me,' Nahanee is quoted as saying in a Thursday media release. She plans to use the windfall to retire comfortably and buy a new car. 'I feel fan-freaking-tastic,' she said of winning a cool $1 million. The BCLC says British Columbians have won more than $27 million from Lotto 6/49 in 2025. The odds of winning the guaranteed $1 million Lotto 6/49 prize depend on how many tickets were sold. The odds of winning the $5 million jackpot are roughly one in 14 million.
