Daniel Levy told to make Ange Postecoglou sacking U-turn in desperate plea
Tottenham are set to appoint Thomas Frank as their new manager after chairman Daniel Levy decided to sack Ange Postecoglou following the club's Europa League triumph
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has been urged to swallow his pride and reverse the decision to sack Ange Postecoglou. The Australian was dismissed as Spurs boss on Friday, but The Lord Mayor of Melbourne, Nick Reece, believes Levy will come to regret his choice.
The Australian has lots of supporters at Spurs after ending the club's 17-year wait for a trophy by winning the Europa League with a 1-0 win over Manchester United in Bilbao. But he was sacked due to Tottenham 's dreadful league form, with the club finishing 17th in the Premier League after suffering 22 defeats.
Postecoglou is set to be replaced by Brentford boss Thomas Frank, but Levy has faced plenty of backlash, with Micky van de Ven among calling the decision 'strange'. Spurs have entered talks with Brentford, who could be owed £10million in compensation for Frank, but the Mayor of Postecoglou's home city has desperately called for a re-think.
'On behalf of the people of Melbourne, and Premier League fans around the world, I call on Tottenham Hotspur FC to reconsider its decision to sack coach Ange Postecoglou,' Reece wrote in a statement on Instagram.
"In @cityofmelbourne we have followed Ange's career closely for decades. He began his junior and senior career in Melbourne as a player and later coach at @southmelbournefc in the 1980s.
"Never underestimate Ange's determination to win, and his ability to carry teams to greatness. We have seen this time again over his career. This year Tottenham made history by winning the Europa League trophy – its first such win in 17 years. We will see with further trophies follow if Ange is given the chance.
"Don't let Tottenham be known as the team that is allergic to silverware. Let Ange lead the players onto greatness in next year's Premier League campaign."
HAVE YOUR SAY! Was sacking Ange Postecoglou the right decision? Comment below.
Postecoglou himself knows that Levy will not U-turn on his decision and has already been linked with another Premier League club. 'When I reflect on my time as manager of Tottenham Hotspur my overriding emotion is one of pride,' he said in a statement.
'The opportunity to lead one of England's historic football clubs and bring back the glory it deserves will live with me for a lifetime. Sharing that experience with all those who truly love this club and seeing the impact it had on them is something I will never forget.
'That night in Bilbao was the culmination of two years of hard work. dedication and unwavering belief in a dream. There were many challenges to overcome and plenty of noise that comes with trying to accomplish what many said was not possible.
'We have also laid foundations that mean this club should not have to wait 17 more years for their next success. I have enormous faith in this group of players and know there is much more potential and growth in them.'

Ex-Rangers boss 'close' to surprise new job with EPL giants
The Dutchman spent just under a year in charge at Ibrox, leading the club he turned out for as a player to the 2022 Europa League final. Read more: Liverpool are now 'close' to appointing Van Bronckhorst to their backroom staff, claims The Athletic. He will replace his fellow countryman John Heitinga, who recently left Anfield to take on the role of head coach at Eredivisie outfit Ajax. Van Bronckhorst spent a brief spell in charge of Besiktas after leaving Rangers before taking up a role on UEFA's Executive Committee. He now appears set to move to Liverpool as the club looks to build on a title-winning campaign. Speaking in April of this year, Van Bronckhorst was asked whether he'd like to become the permanent manager of Rangers once again: "No," he said live on TNT Sports. "For me, that book is closed. "Maybe as a fan, but no." Rangers recently appointed Russell Martin as the club's new head coach following a change of ownership this summer. He officially got down to business earlier this week ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

Emma Raducanu set to become British number one after Katie Boulter defeat
Emma Raducanu will become British number one on Monday after Katie Boulter bowed out at Queen's with a 2-6 6-3 6-2 second-round defeat to Russian fifth-seed Diana Shnaider at the Andy Murray Arena. Boulter, who replaced 2021 US Open winner Raducanu in the top spot exactly two years ago, looked sharp in her first set, saving two break points, breaking the Russian's serve twice, and hitting 10 winners. But, after landing close to three quarters of her first serves in the first set, the issues that had plagued Boulter in her gritty 7-6 (4) 1-6 6-4 victory over Australian qualifier Ajla Tomljanovic on Monday returned to haunt her in the second and third sets on an afternoon the Briton double-faulted nine times. 'I actually think today, the first set was some of the best grass court tennis I have played,' said Boulter, who now turns her attention to defending her title at Nottingham next week. 'I felt a lot sharper on the ball than I did in my first round. I think it's just week by week. I mean, look, grass court tennis is very quick. 'Anything can happen. As you can see today, the match was very topsy-turvy. I find that a lot on grass. It's just racking up the wins and continuing, trusting and believing week in, week out. You know, there are going to be some tough losses along the way, and that's kind of tennis.' The timing of this new tournament – the first time Queen's has hosted women's tennis in 52 years – means Boulter is down points, because she won Nottingham last year in the same week, allowing Raducanu to just usurp her for the time being. Boulter was largely unbothered by the development, even looking forward to the challenge, adding: 'Tennis is a funny one. You know, some people lose 250 points one week, some people lose zero, some people lose 100. 'It's something that happens every single week. I'm very well aware that I lost 250 this week, because Nottingham was next week and the scheduling's been different. 'Of course I personally want to be getting my ranking moving in the right direction. I'm very happy for her to be British number one, but at the same time, it's going to be fun for me to chase her now, and I think she's been doing that for a while. Now it's kind of my turn.' Compatriot Heather Watson also bowed out in the last-16 after she was beaten 6-4 6-2 by former Wimbledon champion and fourth seed Elena Rybakina.
