Around 100 arrested and 11 children rescued in gangbusting probe

STV News08-05-2025

Around 100 people have been arrested and 11 children rescued in a major police operation against a rising Scottish drug gang.
Officers seized more than 200kg of illegal drugs and three guns while targeting a criminal network operating across the country, including in Dumfries, Ayrshire, and central Scotland.
The Operation Intensity investigation, which began in May 2023, indicated that the gang exploited vulnerable people in deprived communities to fund their illicit activity.
Officers also identified 11 children who were 'groomed' by the county lines dealers as part of the illegal activity. The at-risk children were safeguarded by law enforcement.
Police carried out 46 raids during Operation Intensity, resulting in large quantities of drugs, including more than 45kg of cocaine, one kilogram of heroin, 5,000 ecstasy pills and 111kg herbal cannabis being seized.
Detectives also recovered more than £600,000 in cash and firearms, including a handgun, air weapon and a BB gun from addresses targeted with raids
Detective superintendent Stevie Elliot said: 'This operation is a clear example of how we use our national resources, alongside the knowledge of our local policing teams, to bring down large gangs operating across the country.
'Our strategy was maximising the safety of the public and protecting vulnerable people, particularly children and young people who are all too often coerced and groomed by County Lines drug dealers.
'Organised criminal gangs show no shame or remorse for their actions and all their activities are focused on profiting from exploitation.
'These arrests and seizures highlight our dedication to tackling organised networks in Scotland. Illegal substances cause real harm and misery to individuals, families and communities.
'This shows our commitment to the Serious Organised Crime Taskforce where we work with partners on a multi-agency approach to tackling the threat of OCGs.
'We cannot do this alone and we need the public's help to rid these gangs from their communities. I would urge anyone with information or concerns about drugs or organised activities should contact Police Scotland on 101 or make a call anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.'

Singh, from India, said he was visiting his sister in Scotland and was keen to show family back home footage of his travels. Cops arrested Singh and found the video on his mobile plus two others of swans and park scenes. His lawyer Mark Johnson told the court: 'He's here on holiday. 'There was a certain level of naivety involved. 'He did not see the harm in it.' A video of Singh in the park was then shared to social media thousands of times, a move that was questioned by Sheriff Sukhwinder Gill. She told Singh: 'You went to Barnshaw Park on a sunny afternoon. 'You recorded videos intending to send them to family in India. I do not believe there was anymore to it than that. 'I do wonder why you pled guilty to this charge. 'I also question why your image was uploaded onto social media which in itself seem to cause huge concern in the local community, that there was an Asian man in the park who may have been paedophile. Tourist caught filming small child in Scots park tells court he meant 'no harm' 'I was going to admonish you but I'm going to take the unusual step and give you an absolute discharge. 'I'm not going to proceed with your conviction. That is the end of the matter.' We told previously how Police Scotland issues a warning amid reports of men filming kids in Scots playparks. The force said it was "aware" of mounting concerns being shared on social media regarding filming in playparks. Police Scotland says it takes these reports "seriously" and will continue to investigate any other matters reported.

Scottish Water urging people to stay safe around reservoirs

They also show that, in the past five years, there have been 244 accidental drownings in Scotland, including 20 children. The call from Scottish Water follows some anti-social and dangerous behaviour by groups of young people recently at reservoirs across the country. This has included irresponsibly managed campfires, vandalism, littering and diving from water towers which are working parts of reservoirs. Peter Farrer, Scottish Water's chief operating officer, said: 'While people should enjoy any good weather we have this summer and take pleasure around beautiful lochs, reservoirs, rivers and beaches, it's absolutely vital they stay safe at all times and behave responsibly. READ MORE: 'As a number of tragic deaths in Scotland in recent years have shown, safety is a serious issue in all bodies of water. At reservoirs, while the water may look harmless, there are many hidden dangers. We need to ensure everyone is aware of these hazards. We are reminding parents to keep their children safe and asking everyone to act responsibly around reservoirs and other watercourses.' The Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK), the leading water safety education charity, is backing Scottish Water's advice and is launching its annual national Drowning Prevention Week campaign from June 14 to 21. Matt Croxall, Interim Charity Director at RLSS UK, said: 'In the last five years, only 39% of those who accidentally drowned in Scotland intended to be in the water, highlighting how easy it is to unexpectedly get into trouble.' With 42% of Scottish accidental drowning occurring between May and August, RLSS UK's Drowning Prevention Week is timed to ensure families, educators and leisure operators across Scotland have the opportunity to discuss water safety with children and teenagers, just ahead of the school summer holidays. Mr Croxall added: 'With the summer holidays coming and families enjoying staycations across popular destinations in Scotland, it is even more vital that everyone has a strong understanding of what to do if you find yourself or someone else in trouble in the water. "Bringing water safety to the forefront of everyone's mind, Drowning Prevention Week equips people with the appropriate skills and knowledge to be summer ready when it comes to being safe in and around water.' Also supporting Scottish Water's call, Carlene McAvoy, Senior Policy Manager, at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), said: 'Every drowning is a heartbreaking and preventable loss that deeply affects families and communities across Scotland. As summer approaches and more people spend time near water, we're encouraging everyone to take a moment to remember the Water Safety Code: Stop and Think, Spot the Dangers; Stay Together, Stay Close; and In an Emergency, Call 999. 'These simple steps can genuinely save lives. Water Safety Scotland remains committed to supporting communities and partners with free educational resources and clear, consistent messaging—because keeping people safe around water is something we all have a role in."
