Ricky Ponting opened up on the retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, praising India's young talents who can take their place.
Australian cricket legend Ricky Ponting opened up on how the team will navigate the retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
Team India is preparing for their five-match Test series in England, commencing on June 24 at the Headingley Carnegie Stadium. The team will be without the experienced Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who have both retired from Test cricket, as new captain Shubman Gill aims to lead the team into a new chapter.
Ponting acknowledged the difficulty of replacing the seasoned Rohit and Kohli in the Test arena but expressed confidence in India's ability to do so, given their abundance of talented players.
'It's always very difficult to replace players like that who have been around for so long and have played so much Test cricket. But if any country can do it quickly, it's India because of the young talent they have," Ponting was quoted as saying by The ICC Review.
'I've seen it firsthand over the last 10 years in the IPL, and we've witnessed the emergence of players like (Yashasvi) Jaiswal who have transitioned to international cricket with India and performed well almost immediately.
'While replacing the skill is one aspect, which I believe India can do relatively easily, the experience is the key element that will be missing. Even with a young captain like Shubman Gill, they will still have some experienced players like KL Rahul and Bumrah around.
'In a rebuilding phase, I think India can handle it better than most other teams," Ponting added.
'Both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are seasoned players who have secured many victories for us. It is always challenging to replace such talent, but our team has a good blend of youth and experience," Gill stated at the pre-departure press conference.
'This situation does not add extra pressure because our team is always ready to handle stress and knows how to win in such circumstances," Gill added.

This player got Rs 107500000 for bowling just three overs in IPL 2025, his name is.....

Lucknow Super Giants captain and wicketkeeper batsman Rishabh Pant and Kolkata Knight Riders batsman Venkatesh Iyer are being criticized a lot. People are criticizing them fiercely during the IPL and even after this tournament, because these players got huge amounts from IPL teams, but their performance was very poor. If you look, you will forget the performance of Rishabh Pant and Venkatesh Iyer, because there is also a player who has got huge amount for bowling just a few overs. In fact, Rishabh Pant became the most expensive player of IPL, who got crores of rupees from Lucknow Super Giants. At the same time, Venkatesh Iyer was among the players sold at the highest price in the history of this league. We all saw how bad the performance of both of them was. Pant scored less runs than expected throughout the season and Venkatesh Iyer could also score very limited runs. However, there is one bowler who got crores of rupees for bowling just a few overs. Actually, this bowler is none other than T Natarajan, who was bought by Delhi Capitals in the IPL mega auction for Rs107500000, but this bowler got a chance to play in only two matches. In one of these matches, bowling was not required because the match was washed out due to rain. He got to bowl in one match, in which he bowled only a few overs out of his quota of overs and conceded a lot of runs. He did not get any wicket either. In this way, this bowler proved to be the most expensive for Delhi Capitals. T Natarajan's performance was completely opposite to expectations. The expectations with which Delhi Capitals had spent such a huge amount were not fulfilled at all, which raised questions on the team's strategy and selection process. However, the IPL rules state that the percentage of matches you play in the league phase is the percentage of money you get.

Khawaja, Cummins on verge of creating history vs Proteas in WTC 2025 final

As Australia gear up to face South Africa in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final starting 11 June at Lord's, the spotlight will also shine on two of their biggest performers—Usman Khawaja and Pat Cummins—who are both closing in on remarkable personal milestones. Australia are looking to become the first side to retain the WTC mace, and if they are to achieve that, Khawaja's consistency at the top and Cummins' firepower with the ball will be key. With a solid record in the ongoing WTC cycle and years of experience behind them, both players have proven match-winning credentials. But at Lord's, they will also be chasing history—Khawaja is just 70 runs away from a landmark 6,000 Test runs, while Cummins is on the cusp of becoming the eighth Australian to reach 300 Test wickets. Khawaja: The run machine approaches elite club Khawaja has been Australia's standout batter in the current WTC cycle, amassing 1,422 runs in 19 Tests at an average close to 42. He has struck two centuries and six fifties, giving Australia solid starts at crucial junctures. Overall, he has scored 5,930 runs in 80 Tests at an average of 45.61. With 16 centuries and 27 fifties to his name, he sits 16th on Australia's all-time run-scoring list. Khawaja is also one of the top five scorers across all WTC cycles since 2019, and trails only Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne among Australians in that period. Cummins eyes 300-club, trails only Lyon in WTC era Captain Pat Cummins is just six wickets shy of reaching the 300 mark in Tests, a feat achieved by only seven Australians so far. With 294 wickets in 67 Tests at an average of 22.43, he is one of the most lethal pacers of his generation. His current WTC cycle figures are equally impressive—73 wickets in 17 matches, including five five-wicket hauls. Since the inception of the WTC, only Nathan Lyon has more wickets (210) than Cummins' 200, underscoring the captain's impact in crunch games. With a high-octane South African batting line-up awaiting, Cummins could reach the historic mark on the biggest stage of them all.

4 Players Who Could Replace Virat Kohli At No. 4 Spot In Tests For India Against England: Karun Nair, Shubman Gill And...

photoDetails english 2912590 The Shubman Gill-led India will play a five-match Test series in England, starting June 20, 2025. During the all-important series, India will have to find an ideal batter for No. 4 spot as a replacement of batting stalwart Virat Kohli, who retired from Test cricket on May 12. Based on recent performances, domestic records, and suitability to English conditions, India have many talented batters, who could replace Kohli at No. 4 spot in the playing XI. Here are four players who could replace Kohli at No. 4 spot in the Indian Test team: Updated:Jun 07, 2025, 08:03 PM IST 1. Karun Nair 1 / 7 Karun Nair was rewarded for his prolific run in domestic cricket with a call-up in the India Test squad for the upcoming series against England. Karun, who is India's second triple-centurion after Virender Sehwag, has experience of batting in the middle order and he can be a strong contender to replace Virat Kohli at No. 4 spot in the Indian cricket team. The 33-year-old Nair recently hit a double hundred while playing for India A against England Lions in a four-day practice game in Canterbury. Karun Nair's Record In Test Cricket 2 / 7 Karun Nair has played just 6 Test matches for India so far, scoring 374 runs with an impressive average of 62.33 and strike rate of 73.91 so far. He has only one century to his name in Test cricket. However, it was the big one as he scored (303 not out) against England in 2016. 2. Shubman Gill 3 / 7 Shubman Gill has been named India's new captain in Test cricket ahead of the upcoming series against England. The 25-year-old Gill mostly batted at the top of the order or at number three in his Test career so far but he could take the big responsibility of replacing Virat Kohli at No. 4 spot in the Indian cricket team. Him moving to No. 4 spot could be a game changer moment for Gill and might elevate his Test career. Shubman Gill's Record In Test Cricket 4 / 7 Shubman Gill has scored 1893 runs in 32 Test matches with an average of 35.05 and strike rate of 59.92 so far. He has 5 centuries and 7 fifties to his name in Test cricket so far. 3. Sai Sudharsan 5 / 7 Sai Sudharsan has got his maiden call-up in India's Test squad for the upcoming series against England after his strong performances during the India A tour of Australia late last year and back to back impressive IPL seasons. Sudharsan, who made his international debut in the ODI format against South Africa in 2023, has a compact technique and strong temperament, which prompted selectors to give up a Test call-up. He can be a good contender to replace Virat Kohli at No. 4 spot in the Indian cricket team. The 23-year-old Sudharsan won the Orange Cap in the recently-concluded IPL 2025 after scoring 759 runs for Gujarat Titans in 15 matches. 4. Dhruv Jurel 6 / 7 Young wicket-keeper batter Dhruv Jurel has played only a few matches for India in Test cricket so far. However, he has impressed everyone with his remarkable temperament under pressure, particularly in his ability to stabilise innings and bat with the tail. The likes of Ravi Shastri and Ravichandran Ashwin have praised Jurel for his composure, shot selection, and ability to adapt to tough situations. Jurel is also very technically solid as a batter, which makes him a good candidate to replace Virat Kohli at No. 4 spot in the Indian cricket team. Dhruv Jurel's Record In Test Cricket 7 / 7 Dhruv Jurel has scored 202 runs in 54 Test matches with an average of 40.40 and strike rate of 53.15 so far. He has one half-century to his name in Test cricket so far.
