Stuttgart beat Arminia Bielefeld 4-2 to clinch German Cup
VfB Stuttgart beat third-tier Arminia Bielefeld 4-2 with a double from Enzo Millot to lift the German Cup for the first time in 28 years on Saturday (May 24, 2025), bringing relief for Sebastian Hoeness' side after a disappointing Bundesliga campaign.
Goals from Nick Woltemade, Millot and Deniz Undav put Stuttgart 3-0 up at the break before Millot scored again to make it 4-0 after 66 minutes and effectively end the contest.
Bielefeld did pull a goal back through substitute Julian Kania eight minutes from time before Stuttgart's Josha Vagnoman netted an own goal in the 85th but it was too little, too late.
The win was Stuttgart's fourth German Cup success and earned a place in the Europa League's league phase. They finished the Bundesliga campaign ninth, two points off the European spots.
They delivered a bitter ending to a fairytale run for Bielefeld, who stunned holders Bayer Leverkusen in April to reach the final for the first time. They eliminated three other Bundesliga teams in consecutive rounds in the competition.
Bielefeld, who clinched the third division title last weekend, failed to crown their promotion back to Bundesliga 2 with another trophy. They were the fourth third-tier side to reach the German Cup final and first since Union Berlin in 2001.
Bielefeld got off to a lively start and should have taken an early lead through Noah Sarenren Bazee, who smashed the ball against the bar from close range.
Instead, Woltemade put Stuttgart in front after 15 minutes, beating goalkeeper Jonas Kersken with a low shot from the edge of the area.
The 23-year-old forward received his first Germany call-up on Thursday ahead of the Nations League semi-final against Portugal on June 4.
Millot doubled Stuttgart's lead on the counter-attack seven minutes later, scoring into an empty net after the ball was laid off to the 22-year-old midfielder by Undav, who added the third goal himself in the 28th by firing into the bottom corner.
Millot scored his second after the break when he finished a solo run with a low shot inside the far post.
Stuttgart captain Atakan Karazor thought he had a fifth following a corner but his header was ruled out for offside.
Vagnoman's own goal, following Bielefeld's first from Kania, made for a somewhat nervy ending and Stuttgart keeper Alexander Nuebel had to save from substitute Lukas Kunze in stoppage time.
Stuttgart last lifted the German Cup in 1997 when they beat third-tier Energie Cottbus 2-0.

The players brandished the trophy and addressed the crowd as they drove. "You are the champions and you have put Paris at the top of Europe," he said. The president however condemned the violence which had marred the victory celebrations across France on Saturday night. Police made nearly 600 arrests across France, the interior ministry said, after more than 200 cars were torched and police clashed with youths. In the southwest town of Dax, a 17-year-old boy died after being stabbed in the chest. A 23-year-old man riding a scooter in central Paris also died after being hit by a vehicle. A policeman was in an induced coma after being injured by a firework. The violence quickly became a political football in France on Sunday as parties on the right and left took the opportunity to criticise the handling of the celebrations. "Nothing can justify what has happened in the last few hours, the violent clashes are unacceptable," said Macron. "We will pursue, we will punish, we will be relentless." PSG concluded their day's festivities with a party at their Parc des Princes home ground. Each player walked onto the pitch to a different song and each received a standing ovation. Club captain Marquinhos, who joined the club in 2013, was the last to take centre stage, holding one handle of the trophy as club president President Nasser al-Khelaifi held the other. "After all these years, I can cry now, this is the day of glory!" Marquinhos said, before telling the crowd: "We love you. Enjoy it! We are European champions!" Even the club president received praise, with the crowd cheering: "Thank you Nasser." Qatar Sports Investments, which al-Khelaifi chairs, has pumped hundreds of millions of euros into PSG since buying it as an ailing club in 2011. Over the last couple of seasons they have turned their back on their former policy of signing stars such as Neymar and Lionel Messi and focussed on young French talent, such as 19-year-old Desire Doue, scorer of two goals on Saturday. Inter Milan defender Bisseck to miss Germany games after getting injured in Champions League final
MUNICH — Inter Milan defender Yann Aurel Bisseck will miss Germany's upcoming Nations League games after getting injured in the team's Champions League final loss to Paris Saint-Germain. Bisseck only made a short appearance in Saturday's final, going on as a substitute in the 54th minute, then off again in the 62nd with an apparent right leg injury. The German soccer federation said Sunday that Bisseck had muscular problems at the back of his right thigh, ruling him out of the Nations League semifinal against Portugal in Munich on Wednesday, as well as the final or third-place playoff against Spain or France four days later.
