Sudarsan Pattnaik seeks CM's intervention over Digha temple ‘Jagannath Dham' row

BHUBANESWAR: Eminent sculptor and former Srimandir managing committee member Sudarsan Pattnaik on Friday sought Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi's intervention into the controversy surrounding Jagannath temple at Digha.
In a letter to the chief minister, Pattnaik said the use of word Dham by the West Bengal government for the temple has deeply hurt the religious sentiments of millions of Jagannath devotees across the world.
'According to sacred scriptures, there exists only one Jagannath Dham, which is located at Puri. Associating any other temple with the title 'Jagannath Dham' may lead to religious confusion and contradicts the long-standing spiritual and Hindu cultural traditions,' he wrote.
Pointing out that a few sevayats from Puri have reportedly claimed that 'brahma' has been established in the stone idol of Lord Jagannath at Digha temple, Pattnaik said the concept of 'brahma' in Mahaprabhu Jagannath's idol is deeply sacred and unique aspect of Srimandir, tied to centuries of tradition and ritual secrecy.
Seeking an investigation, Pattnaik alleged that the findings of government inquiry into 'Brahma Parivartan' (soul transfer) delay in 2015 Nabakalebara is yet to be made public.

Fresh enumeration will end confusion on caste census: PWD minister Jarkiholi

BENGALURU: PWD Minister Satish Jarkiholi, who had demanded fresh caste enumeration, told the media on Thursday that there was too much chaos, and a repeat enumeration should end the confusion. He said the Congress central leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, KC Venugopal, Randeep Surjewala, besides Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM DK Shivakumar, on June 10 decided to scrap the Rs 165-crore caste census, after complaints that the report was unscientific and its numbers dated. The decision aims to address objections from certain communities, particularly the dominant Veerashaiva Lingayat and Vokkaliga communities, who had labelled the 2015 Kantharaj survey 'unscientific' and claimed it had 'missed them out''. They claimed their numbers were undercounted. The 2015 survey, conducted by the H Kantharaj Commission, faced criticism for alleged inaccuracies, including issues like the Sadara community's population being reported as 65,000, with some ministers arguing that classification is erroneous, eg. the Sadara Hindu community being counted separately led to errors. Jarkiholi noted that rectifying data and allowing communities to reclassify their caste identities is crucial. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said they would take 60-70 days for the new survey, though one expert who had served in the Backward Classes Commission warned that completing a full-fledged enumeration of Karnataka's projected 7crore population in 60-70 days could be difficult, if not impossible. The expert said they had used the commission in 2015, but for such an exercise, a proper team needs to be constituted. The 2015 survey, which covered 95 per cent of the 5.98 crore population, required 1.35 lakh enumerators, and posed logistical challenges, including restrictions on using school teachers during the academic year, could delay the process. He also cautioned that rushing the process could lead to political repercussions for the Congress.

Martyrdom Day of Guru Teg Bahadur: SGPC again urges Centre to release Sikh prisoners

Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Harjinder Singh Dhami on Thursday appealed to the central government to release Sikh prisoners on the occasion of the upcoming 350th martyrdom day of the ninth Sikh master Guru Teg Bahadur. Briefing the media after presiding over a meeting of the executive committee, Dhami said that the central government should announce the release of the Sikh prisoners on the occasion of this historic day dedicated to the ninth Guru. 'Guru Teg Bahadur sacrificed his life to uphold human rights and to protect the Hindu faith, which is a unique example in religious history. Therefore, the central government should morally honour this great martyrdom by announcing the release of Sikh prisoners who have completed their sentences,' Dhami said. He urged the Union and Punjab governments to establish memorials dedicated to the upcoming centenaries. 'Although the Punjab government has sought suggestions from the sangat (community) regarding the centenary celebrations, this work is the responsibility of the SGPC and not the government. The role of the government should be to build suitable memorials and undertake developmental works at towns and places associated with the Gurus,' he said. Dhami expressed concern over the Haryana Gurdwara Management Committee's attempts to take control of Miri Piri Medical College located in Shahabad Markanda. 'This medical college was established on land dedicated in the name of Sri Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple), Amritsar, not on land belonging to any gurdwara in Haryana. Haryana committee should not use political influence or interfere with the services being rendered by the SGPC in the medical field,' he said.
