AirAsia Might Set Hub in Ras Al Khaimah or Saudi Arabia

UAE Moments11 hours ago

Malaysian budget airline, AirAsia, is planning to strengthen air links between South-East Asia and the Gulf by opening a hub in the region.
The airline has shortlisted four airports, including the one in Ras Al Khaimah and another destination in Saudi Arabia, according to the airline's CEO, Tony Fernandes revealed in an interview with Dubai Eye radio channel on Monday, June 30.
He said, "But I can be very open that countries that are interested in us and [those] we are interested in … includes Saudi Arabia, [and] Ras Al Khaimah as well."
He also said, "Sharjah is well served by a very good airline, Air Arabia. And Dubai wouldn't be somewhere that we looked at. That's a big airport, a complicated airport."
The move comes as AirAsia recovers from a bankruptcy-like restructuring post-COVID-19. According to reports, Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund, the Public Investment Fund (PIF), is preparing to invest about $100 million in the Malaysian airline.
This would be the airline's second attempt to set up a hub in the Gulf region, after AirAsia pulled out of Abu Dhabi in 2010 because of some operational issues.

RIYADH — The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah announced that the number of Umrah visas issued to pilgrims coming from outside the Kingdom has exceeded 190,000 since the start of the Umrah season on Dhul Hijjah 14, corresponding to June 10, until Monday, June 30. The ministry facilitated the issuance of Umrah visas through the Nusuk platform. This marks the beginning of a new phase of facilitating the pilgrimage services, in line with the Kingdom's ongoing efforts to enhance the pilgrims' experience under Saudi Vision 2030. The ministry confirmed that the issuance of Umrah permits for pilgrims began on Wednesday, June 11, via the Nusuk app, which is the unified digital platform for providing government services to pilgrims and visitors. The platform enables users to book and issue permits easily, in addition to offering a wide range of digital services to support and enhance the Umrah experience. The early surge in Umrah visa applications follows a highly successful Hajj season, characterized by streamlined procedures, improved performance, and upgraded technical infrastructure, all contributing to greater efficiency in services provided to Hajj and Umrah pilgrims. Saudi: New Social Insurance Law will come into force on July 1

RIYADH — The General Organization for Social Insurance (GOSI) announced that the provisions of the new Social Insurance Law issued by a Royal Decree on July 2, 2024, will come into force on Tuesday, July 1. The GOSI noted that this law is applicable exclusively to new civil employees, joining the public and private sectors, who do not have any prior contribution periods in the current Civil Pension Law or Social Insurance Law. The amended law stipulates gradual increase in retirement age while there will be no change in the benefits for the current subscribers of GOSI. The organization stated that the statutory retirement age for individuals affected by the amendments will range between 58 and 65 Gregorian years. The organization stated that this law will contribute to expanding the scope of insurance coverage to include more categories and will achieve flexibility in job transfers between the public and private sectors without affecting subscribers' insurance rights, by unifying insurance provisions under the umbrella of a single law. The new regulations, which will be applied to new subscribers to the Social Insurance System, include a gradual increase in the pension branch subscription rates, starting from the second year of the system's validity until the fifth year, by 0.5 percent annually, so that the cumulative increase reaches 2 percent. Hence the subscription rate becomes 11 percent instead of 9 percent for the subscriber and the employer. The law stressed the need for employers to commit to paying subscriptions on their specified dates, in order to preserve the rights of employees subject to the system. The maternity benefit will also be implemented starting Tuesday, July 1. Under this benefit, the GOSI grants female subscribers, whether Saudi or non-Saudi, maternity compensation for three months upon giving birth. The GOSI urged all its customers, both subscribers and employers, to review all the details related to these provisions through the awareness platform on the organization's website or via the GOSI app. © Copyright 2022 The Saudi Gazette.
