Stop guerrilla rewilding, say Scottish gamekeepers after feral pigs released
A gamekeeping body has pleaded with authorities to stop 'guerrilla rewilding' from becoming the norm after a group of pigs were illegally released in the Cairngorms.
The animals, which were released in the Uath Lochans area of the Cairngorms National Park on Monday, have been located.
On Wednesday, Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS) said its staff were still trying to contain and humanely trap the animals.
The FLS said it would take advice from NatureScot and Police Scotland on what to do with them, and added they must be contained for their own welfare, and also due to the risk of spreading diseases through the park.
On Wednesday, a spokesperson for the Scottish Gamekeepers Association (SGA) described the release as a 'selfish and thoughtless act' that jeopardised the welfare of the animals, as well as posing a risk to livestock and to the public.
It came after four lynx were illegally released in the park last month, one of which died shortly after they were captured.

The SGA said the release of the pigs appeared to be a form of 'guerrilla rewilding' by people 'frustrated' at official reintroduction processes.
'Rewilding is becoming popularised as a concept, and there's a lot of organisations pushing the rewilding mantra,' they said.
'It would appear that this is more a form of guerrilla rewilding.
'Perhaps people or devotees within that movement are becoming frustrated at the standard stakeholder processes which must happen around any reintroduction of species.'
The process, they explained, included 'negotiation with the people on the ground that will be most impacted' by any reintroduction such as farmers and local communities.
'It's the people who have to deal with the consequences of that, they should ultimately have the final sign-off, because they have got to live with it every day,' he said.
'If that process is not followed, then the authorities have to act decisively to ensure that this type of guerrilla rewilding does not take hold in Scotland as the norm'.
They added that the Scottish Government had 'emboldened' people to reintroduce species illegally when they took no action after the illegal release of beavers as early as 2001.
The SGA said the government's decision to protect the animals, alongside those reintroduced in an official trial in 2009, set 'a tone and a precedent' for this kind of action.
The organisation said that it is not known whether there is any connection between the release of the pigs and the lynx, though it is a possibility.
On Tuesday, Tom Cameron, the FLS north region area wildlife manager, said: 'FLS staff have located the pigs and are now working to contain them.
'As we work to do this, we are asking anyone not involved with the operation to stay away from the area so trained staff can do their job and the animals are not unduly stressed or startled.
'From their behaviour, it is apparent that these are domesticated pigs and the hope is we can live trap the group using a corral trapping system.
'Once caught, FLS will take advice from NatureScot and Police Scotland on what to do with them.'
He added: 'It is important to contain the pigs. This is for their own welfare and because we don't know their origin or whether there is the potential for them to spread any disease across domesticated livestock in the area.'
Police Scotland said it is aware of the incident, but is not actively involved at this stage.
On Monday, the park authority said on Facebook: 'The park authority condemns any illegal release of animals in the strongest possible terms.'
Scottish Land and Estates (SLE), which supports rural businesses, has condemned the 'reckless' release of the pigs, and encouraged anyone with information to contact police.
The Scottish Government has been asked for comment.

Swinney ‘must be held to account' over Scottish Water pay dispute, unions say
Unions representing Scottish Water employees have said the First Minister 'must be held to account' as staff striking over pay accused the Scottish Government of 'hypocrisy' over its commitment to workers' rights. Members of GMB Scotland and other unions at the publicly-owned organisation began strike action on Monday and it will continue until Sunday. Staff represented by GMB, Unite and Unison previously rejected a 3.4% pay increase covering the last nine months as the company changed the date for annual rises to take effect from July to April. Speaking at a rally of striking workers at Scottish Water's Shieldhall depot in Glasgow on Wednesday, GMB general secretary Gary Smith warned the ongoing dispute could become one of the most significant in the country's public sector and he urged ministers to intervene. Unions also claim Scottish Water has failed to appropriately engage in pay negotiations, and that chief executive Alex Plant attended talks on Tuesday for the first time but only stayed briefly. Mr Smith said: 'How did we end up with workers being refused a fair pay rise while executives line their pockets with record bonuses? How did we end up with a chief executive finally turning up to pay talks after a year and only staying for 20 seconds? 'It is damning of the management of Scottish Water but damning too of the hypocrisy of a Scottish Government that advocates for fair work and the protection of public services. 'John Swinney and his ministers must be held to account for this growing scandal. From this point forward, every time they talk to us about fair work and how Scotland treats working people better, we will point to Scottish Water and its absolute failure to make good on that promise.' Tuesday's meeting escalated the dispute further, with unions now accusing the employer of weakening the pay offer. Workers carrying out emergency repairs, testing and maintenance are now striking, which they have warned will threaten the daily operations of the water supplier. Claire Greer, GMB Scotland organiser, said the unions had agreed to attend the hastily-convened meeting on Tuesday night in the hope of a better offer and a possible resolution. She said: 'Scottish Water has shown no interest in reaching a fair settlement and sat on its hands as a dispute that could have easily been resolved months ago escalated. 'The Scottish Government must now explain to its senior management team why its refusal to clearly and honestly engage with its own workforce cannot stand.' Unison regional manager Simon Macfarlane said: 'Scottish Water staff are very angry in how last night's pay talks were handled by the company. Scottish Water boss, Alex Plant, appeared at the table for less than five minutes. 'First Minister John Swinney needs to step in and help get this sorted. Scottish Water is behaving like a rogue employer, not an exemplar of fair work.' Sam Ritchie, Unite industrial officer, said: 'Unite members are angry and deeply frustrated with the management of Scottish Water. There has been disregard and arrogance shown towards the concerns of the workforce in meetings with management. This dispute is not just about wages, it's about fairness, dignity and respect. 'Alex Plant, chief executive, who received a pay package last year of nearly half a million pounds, came into the negotiating room for all of two minutes. 'If Mr Plant can collect an exorbitant salary from the taxpayer then at the very least he should listen to the staff who earn a fraction of his pay. Talks have hit a roadblock and they are not progressing. 'Unions and management are set to resume talks over the coming days but no new offer is currently on the table which would end this dispute.' Also in attendance was union body the Scottish Trade Unions Congress, and its general Secretary Roz Foyer said: 'The Scottish Government has a responsibility to step in and help find a solution. 'Workers and their unions are committed to securing a positive outcome, not only for their members but to uphold the standards within our public services. 'That cannot happen while Scottish Water continues its intransigence in this dispute.' A Scottish Water spokesperson said: 'This is a matter for Scottish Water and its trade unions, who we value our relationship with. 'Scottish Water has acted in good faith and with integrity throughout these negotiations. 'We have a long history of being a good employer – with wages rising by about 11% above inflation in the past decade – at a time when many people in other sectors saw their wages stagnate or go backwards. 'We've made another strong offer this time that is comfortably above inflation and prioritises those on the lowest wages.' The Scottish Government has been asked for comment.

Development on Bannockburn battlefield site refused planning permission
Scottish ministers have refused planning permission for a development on the historic Bannockburn battlefield site. Turning down plans to build a trotting track for harness racing, the Scottish Government ruled the proposals would 'introduce new development and urbanisation in one of the few remaining undeveloped parts of the battlefield'. As such it ruled the development 'would have a significant adverse effect on the character of the battlefield, its setting and sense of place'. The site is where in June 1314 Robert the Bruce and his Scottish army famously defeated English troops led by King Edward II. Stirling Council approved plans for the development in July last year, with conservation charity the National Trust for Scotland saying was 'shocked and disappointed' at the decision. The Scottish Government formally 'called in' the decision in August 2024, with ministers now overturning the council's original determination. While ministers were 'sympathetic' to points made in support of the application, their ruling stated they 'do not consider that the benefits of the proposed development would outweigh the adverse impacts on a nationally significant battlefield and its associated listed buildings'. Ministers added the part of the battlefield where the development was to be sited is 'especially sensitive and remains undeveloped' – adding this 'greatly assists an appreciation of its role in the battle'. Diarmid Hearns, acting director of conservation and policy at the National Trust for Scotland, said: 'This is very welcome news for the trust and all who care about Scotland's heritage and history.' He said the ministers' conclusions 'closely accord with our stated views that this development was simply in the wrong place and would have badly impacted upon the setting of the battlefield'. He added: 'We hope that this decision brings this matter to an end and that the developer withdraws to a new site elsewhere that will not impinge on places of historical importance.' The Scottish Government also refused a separate application for a golf driving range to be built in the area, saying: 'The proposed development does not effectively protect the cultural significance or the key landscape characteristics of the battlefield.' Ministers said these plans 'would have a significant adverse impact on the landscape features, character and setting of the battlefield and that the overall integrity and character of the battlefield area would be compromised by the proposed development'. A Scottish Government spokesperson confirmed: 'Scottish ministers have refused planning permission for a golf driving range and trotting track within the Bannockburn battlefield.'

Pacers vs. Thunder Game 1 Predictions: Odds, expert picks, recent stats, trends and best bets for June 5
On Thursday, June 5, the Indiana Pacers (50-32) and Oklahoma City Thunder (68-14) are all set to square off from Paycom Center in Oklahoma City for Game 1 of the NBA Finals. The Indiana Pacers capped off its magical run with a 4-2 series win over the Knicks at home, giving NBA fans one of the most memorable runs since the Dallas Mavericks in 2011. Indiana beat both Milwaukee and Cleveland in five games apiece before finishing the Knicks off in six. On the other hand, the Thunder were the favorite to win the NBA Finals for months and are four wins away from accomplishing this rare feat after sliding by the Timberwolves in five games. Denver did give OKC a run with a seven-game series after the 4-0 sweep in the first round, but that's the only sweat the Thunder have endured lately. Oklahoma City won both meetings versus Indiana this season by 6 and 21 points (120-114, 132-111). Chet Holmgren did not play in either meeting this season and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 33 and 45 points on the Pacers with 8 assists and 7 rebounds in each game. The Pacers are currently 20-20 on the road with a point differential of 2, while the Thunder have a 8-2 record in their last ten games at home. Expert picks & predictions for Thursday's Pacers vs. Thunder game 'This might be a line that goes unnoticed in the first few games of the series. When you think about Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, it's generally how great and effective of a scorer he is. However, SGA grabs boards and when help comes, he's a fantastic facilitator. SGA has gone over this number in both meetings the two teams played against each other this season. He also went over in three of the five games in the Western Conference Finals. Sprinkle the double double as well.' Vaughn Dalzell (@VmoneySports) likes a sprinkle on SGA (+500) and Jalen Williams (+6600) to lead the series in assists: 'Tyrese Haliburton obviously seems like the right choice, but in comparison, the odds say Haliburton is more likely to lead the series in assists than SGA is to win MVP -- I do not agree with that whatsoever. If Haliburton has two games with 5, 6 assists, or less, like he did in one of two regular season meetings, then this race will be much closer than the odds indicate, so I would sprinkle Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jalen Williams in this market. Both SGA and Williams averaged about 5 and 7 assists per game over the postseason with double-digit potential assists per game. There is a strong potential for double-double or even triple-double opportunities for both OKC stars.' Please bet responsibly.
