Asst municipal chief seeks FIR on illegal parking fees

Time of India2 days ago

Mumbai: Following a TOI report on Tuesday, June 3, highlighting how motorists were being illegally charged at designated free parking spots in south Mumbai, the assistant municipal commissioner of A ward wrote to the MRA Marg police station, requesting an FIR against unidentified persons for violating BMC rules.
The letter—which refers to the TOI news report 'Declared free for use, SoBo parking lots still charging motorists'—stated: "We request that action be taken in this matter, and legal action be initiated against the contractor by filing a police complaint. The matter involves violation of BMC rules, misuse of public space, and collection of money despite the official directive to not charge motorists. Hence, it is requested that based on the report published on June 3, an investigation be initiated and a First Information Report (FIR) be filed in the matter.
"
A TOI team on June 2 had visited parking spots in south Mumbai, which were made free temporarily for parking, and found that motorists were being charged at these spots.
BMC officials said while these were temporary free parking spots, they were in the process of appointing a new agency either for a short-term three-month period or a fresh two-year contract through the office of the deputy chief engineer (traffic). "These sites are temporarily free until then," said an official.
It may be recollected that in April, a sting operation done by BMC officers exposed pay-and-park contractors overcharging motorists in several BMC-operated parking lots of south Mumbai. Following this, the BMC's A Ward proposed making all pay-and-park facilities in the area free until a new contractor is appointed.

Kill Bill, says Musk, as he emerges as alternative power center to Trump

TOI correspondent from US : Elon Musk has not only parted ways with President Trump but is emerging as a political challenger to the MAGA supremo after clashing with him on the so-called Big Beautiful Bill that the tech-tycoon says will bankrupt America. "Call your Senator, Call your Congressman, Bankrupting America is NOT ok! KILL the BILL!" Musk said on a second day of attacks on Trump and his legislative flock, planting a banner of revolt in the Republican Party, and emerging as a new power center to challenge Trump. Although Musk is not eligible to run for the White House because he is not US-born, he has allied with Republican Senators who share his alarm over America's mounting debt and who can scupper the bill as it comes to the Senate before the July 4 recess. "This spending bill contains the largest increase in the debt ceiling in US history! It is the Debt Slavery Bill," Musk said in one of several posts on a legislation that Trump owns, repurposing a poster from the movie Kill Bill. Musk went on to pin reactions from Fox News to illustrate that his stand on spending cuts to contain the deficit had more support from the rank and file than Trump Republicans had for the BBB. Musk also went on to endorse a proposal by GOP Senator Mike Lee to draft a constitutional amendment to oust every member of Congress whenever inflation exceeds 3 per cent, an idea once mooted by Warren Buffett to eliminate the US deficit. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Memperdagangkan CFD Emas dengan salah satu spread terendah? Democrats are rejoicing over Musk attacks on Trump, who, in an ironic twist, reached out to a liberal Democratic senator, Elizabeth Warren (who he has long derided as "pocohontas' and a "radical left loony) to work on legislation to scrap the debt ceiling. "I am very pleased to announce that, after all of these years, I agree with Senator Elizabeth Warren on SOMETHING. The Debt Limit should be entirely scrapped to prevent an Economic catastrophe," Trump said on his social media platform. "@realDonaldTrumpand I agree: the debt limit should be scrapped to prevent an economic catastrophe. Let's pass a bipartisan bill and get rid of it forever," Warren responded, indicating new alignments centering on fiscal policy.

From Cartons to Community Parks: Mumbai Launches Citywide Recycling Relay on World Environment Day

To mark World Environment Day, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Rotary Club of Bombay Mid City, and Tetra Pak India have joined forces to launch a citywide sustainability campaign-the Carton Recycling Relay-designed to turn used beverage cartons into durable benches for Mumbai's public parks. Benches made entirely from recycled cartons donated by Tetra Pak to Patwardhan Park, Bandra In its first phase, the initiative aims to collect 2.5 lakh used cartons from across the city, which will be recycled into 25 garden benches to be installed in selected public parks. This collaborative effort brings to life the principles of recycling, circular economy, and community participation, with citizens at the heart of the transformation. 'This is a brilliant example of how partnerships can bring sustainability into public spaces, and how the public can actively participate in this transformation,' said Jeetendra V. Pardeshi, Superintendent of the Gardens and Tree Office, BMC. 'We're not just recycling-we're creating something useful and lasting for the community. This initiative represents the kind of smart, sustainable thinking our city needs.' To kick off the campaign, a set of benches made entirely from recycled cartons were donated to Patwardhan Park, Bandra, a popular green space in Mumbai. The event was attended by Mr. Dinesh Pallewad, Assistant Commissioner, Ms. Swapna Mhatre, Ex Corporator, Mr. Dnyandev Mundhe, Dy. Supdt. of Gardens Zone 3, Mr. Kamlesh Kholiya, Sustainability Manager, Tetra Pak South Asia; Ajay Mishra, Rotary President; and Ms Monisha Narke, Founder, RUR Greenlife. 'At Tetra Pak, we believe that sustainability is a shared responsibility,' added Kamlesh Kholiya, Sustainability Manager, Tetra Pak South Asia. 'The Carton Recycling Relay turns citizens into changemakers. By transforming used cartons into public assets, we're fostering circularity and strengthening community engagement.' A life-size, carton-shaped collection bin will now travel across prominent locations in the city, encouraging schools, housing societies, businesses, and individuals to deposit their used beverage cartons. More than 50 drop-off points are already available across Reliance Retail and Shakari Bhandar stores across Mumbai up to make participation easy and accessible for all. Over the next few weeks, the relay will travel across key Mumbai locations, mobilizing schools, RWAs, and workplaces. As the city works toward the 2.5 lakh carton target, 22 more benches will be created and donated-transforming waste into symbols of community action and environmental stewardship. 'Sustainability is one of the 7 pillars of Rotary thrust area and always work around related to protection of environment. We are working with MCGM and corporate to set up street furniture made from recycled waste for awareness since long time. We are happy to see that Tetra Pak came forward to support the cause and create awareness. We are glad to work as bridges between benefactor and donor,' added Ajay Mishra, President, Rotary. The initiative is being implemented on-ground by RUR Greenlife, a long-standing Tetra Pak partner known for its work in waste management and citizen-led recycling. Media outreach is being supported by Free Press Journal. This campaign is part of a program called 'Go Green with Tetra Pak' launched in 2010 by Tetra Pak, in collaboration with Reliance Retail and RUR Greenlife. The program encourages Mumbaikars to drop off their used beverage cartons at over 60 Reliance Smart and Sahakari Bhandar outlets, and over 100 other drop-off points across Mumbai. These cartons are then recycled into useful items like desks & garden benches and donated back to the society.
