Woman stabs 12-year-old at nature preserve, leaves her under brush, FL cops say
A woman attacked a 12-year-old girl with a knife at a Florida nature preserve and tried to conceal her under some brush before fleeing, authorities said.
Law enforcement obtained warrants for the arrest of 35-year-old Gwendolyn Girard on charges of aggravated battery and aggravated child abuse in the May 26 incident, the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office said.
Girard and the girl knew each other, but deputies could not provide further detail on their relationship due to the ongoing investigation.
The afternoon of Memorial Day, passersby at the Cecil M. Webb Wildlife Management Area found a girl with cuts on her face and neck, deputies said in a news release.
First responders said when they arrived, they found her 'weak and in need of immediate medical attention.'
The 12-year-old told investigators that Girard stabbed her and tried to 'hide her body' in the brush, although she was still alive, then Girard fled in a van, according to deputies.
The Lee County Sheriff's Office found Girard and the van in North Fort Myers, and during questioning, Girard told deputies what happened and where the knife was, according to investigators.
'To attack a child with a knife … I can't understand it,' Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Prummel said. 'It is only by God's grace that she is still with us today, and I pray for her as she heals from this horrific incident. Unfortunately, the mental trauma inflicted on her may never heal.'
Girard was booked in Lee County jail.
The wildlife management area is in southwest Florida, about a 15-mile drive northwest from Fort Myers.

On Memorial Day, Sherrer was shot and killed while responding to a domestic situation at a home on County Road 26 south of Marengo. Sherrer's body was taken to the Montgomery County Coroner's Office before a police escort brought him back to Mount Gilead last Wednesday during a 120-mile procession. Flags around Ohio have been flying at half staff under an order from Gov. Mike DeWine that will expire at sunset Wednesday. Sherrer became a Morrow County deputy in May 2021. The 2012 graduate of St. Charles Preparatory in Columbus was engaged to be married and is survived by his parents and other relatives. Brian Wilson, 53, has been charged in Sherrer's death. Family mourns loss of ‘vibrant' woman killed in Western Mass. motorcycle crash
A family is mourning the loss of 'a vibrant and spirited' woman — Madisen Taylor — who lost her life in a car crash involving a motorcycle in Western Massachusetts over Memorial Day weekend. 'Madisen's loving and warm personality made a significant impact on the lives of those who knew her,' Taylor's obituary reads. 'She will be deeply missed.' Taylor died in a crash between a car and a motorcycle in Agawam in the early evening of Saturday, May 24. Agawam police responded to the crash at the intersection of Suffield Street and Adams Street shortly before 5:10 p.m. At the scene, officers found Taylor with severe injuries. Firefighters brought her to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield where she later died. Taylor grew up in Ware and attended Pathfinder High School, her obituary states. Taylor's education helped her develop 'a passion for horticulture and gardening' as well as a 'deep appreciation for the beauty of nature.' She later moved to Agawam and started working in a dog daycare business. 'This career not only highlighted her nurturing nature but also her desire to bring happiness to the lives of others,' Taylor's obituary reads. 'Madisen's spirit was one of vibrant kindness; she had a smile that could light up a room and she gave the best hugs.' Outside of work, Taylor loved to sing and spend time outdoors, including at botanical gardens, the Quabbin Reservoir and the Swift River. The 26-year-old is survived by her parents, sister, fiancé, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. FBI releases new details on Palm Springs bombing; suspect had weapon and ammunition
As Palm Springs heads into the Memorial Day weekend less than a week after the terrorist bombing of a downtown fertility clinic, the FBI released a few new details Friday on its ongoing investigation. The bureau confirmed that an unspecified weapon and ammunition were found near the wreckage of the silver sedan that exploded May 17 at the American Reproductive Centers clinic and killed the suspect, 25-year-old Guy Edward Bartkus, and injured four others. The clinic later confirmed that no eggs, embryos or reproductive materials were damaged in the bombing. A tripod and a cell phone equipped with a camera were also found near the scene, suggesting Bartkus attempted to livestream the attack on the clinic, FBI spokesperson Laura Eimiller said Friday. (The bureau had previously said it was looking into eyewitness reports of the tripod, but hadn't confirmed its existence.) 'Investigators are working to determine whether the suspected livestream was successful but, to date, have found no evidence to confirm this,' the bureau said in its update. Bartkus, a resident of Twentynine Palms, also had access to 'a large quantity' of commercially available chemical products that could be used to form a homemade explosive device, according to the FBI. 'The (Joint Terrorism Task Force) continues to investigate multiple online posts and audio recordings posted by Bartkus where he had expressed these views,' the FBI said. The bureau also said evidence shows Bartkus left his residence in Twentynine Palms at approximately 6 a.m. May 17 and was in the Palm Springs vicinity for "several hours" prior to the bombing.
