Alivia Lathen, daughter of legendary East Aurora basketball star, hits home run for Yorkville. How? ‘I just did.'
Yorkville's Alivia Lathen might want to keep visualizing good things happening for her when she steps into the batter's box.
The sophomore second baseman was already 3-for-3 in a breakout performance Tuesday afternoon when she came to the plate in the top of the sixth inning at Kaneland.
'I was like thinking, 'Oh, I feel like I'm gonna hit a home run,'' Lathen said. 'And I just did.'
See it, believe it.
If it works, why not?
Lathen's line-drive, two-run homer was a legitimate frozen rope, gaining little altitude while rocketing over the left field fence to complete the scoring in Yorkville's 10-2 nonconference win.
'My hitting has been a little iffy, but I've been getting in some extra work this week to get back to consistency,' Lathen said. 'I've been in my head a lot, swinging at pitches that aren't my pitches.
'This game, I was swinging at my pitches and waiting for my strength.'
It started benignly enough for the Foxes (5-2) and Lathen, with a sacrifice bunt attempt in the second inning that was so well-placed it went for a single with no throw on the play.
Lathen then added a double and single, boosting a 13-hit attack on Kaneland (7-2) that included three from Iowa-bound junior catcher Kayla Kersting in support of winning pitcher Ellie Fox.
Fox, a junior right-hander, struck out eight in going the distance. She allowed six hits and a walk.
'I think we allowed her to get in a good rhythm and she was mixing (pitches) well and she kept us guessing a little bit more than what we should have,' Kaneland coach Mike Kuefler said of Fox. 'Ellie took advantage of the outside corner, and we just didn't make any adjustments for it.'
Freshman first baseman Addison Coulter had two doubles and sophomore outfielder Ansley Ruh added a two-run single for the Knights. Junior righty Brynn Woods struck out seven in four innings.
Kaneland was coming off a spring trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, winning four games and losing one in extra innings.
'We started out the season pretty strong and really haven't faced much adversity,' Kuefler said. 'Our girls are still learning and we learned (Tuesday).'
That's true as well for Lathen, a second-year varsity player.
'I was happy to make varsity freshman year and start because I was playing a lot,' she said. 'I realized, though, I had to keep working hard just to keep playing.
'I felt a little nervous at first with the older girls, but they were very welcoming.'
The daughter of Darius and Crystal Lathen, Alivia started playing softball when she was 9. She plays travel ball with the Crystal Lake-based Crush Tidal Waves Premier 16U.
Her father is legendary in Aurora basketball circles, having made the game-winning shot for East Aurora in overtime of the 1999 sectional final win over West Aurora. Captured in a Beacon-News photograph, it's one of the most talked about moments in the long history of the East-West rivalry.
Alivia's grandfather Craig 'Cubby' Lathen also starred in basketball at East Aurora, playing for the legendary coach Ernie Kivisto.
She played basketball and volleyball but gave them up in junior high and after freshman year, respectively, to focus on softball.
'I don't want to say she struggled, but the last couple games, we faced some challenging pitchers,' Yorkville coach Jory Regnier said of losses to Lincoln-Way East and Lincoln-Way Central. 'We just talked about her approach, approach, approach.
'She put in the extra reps and she's feeling good, had a great game. She's crazy athletic and is great on the bases. If the third baseman is playing back, she has the green light to bunt or drive the ball. She's a pretty dynamic player.'

Sovereignty, Journalism, Baeza are 'top tier' in crop of Belmont Stakes horses
The 2025 Belmont Stakes — the third and final leg of the Triple Crown — takes place Saturday at Saratoga Race Course and FOX has you covered. Our television coverage begins at 4 p.m. ET, and yours truly and Geoff Schwartz will handle digital duties all afternoon on the Bear Bets social platforms. See you there. Due to construction at Belmont Park, this year's Belmont is being held at Saratoga. It'll be run at 1 ¼ miles instead of the traditional mile and a half. Kentucky Derby winner Sovereignty is back in the mix, as is third-place Derby finisher Baeza to form a three-headed monster with Preakness winner Journalism. Those three horses are the undoubted heavy hitters. Odds to win 2025 Belmont Stakes 1. Hill Road: 10/12. Sovereignty: 2/13. Rodriguez: 6/14. Uncaged: 30/15. Crudo: 15/16. Baeza: 4/17. Journalism: 8/5 8. Heart of Honor: 30/1 As I've always said, I bet the horses but lean on my guys. Handicapper Colin Sheehan from Trust the Prophets is two-for-two in this year's Triple Crown after nailing Sovereignty at Churchill Downs and Journalism at Pimlico. "Heading into the Derby, I believed Sovereignty, Journalism and Baeza were the top tier of this year's crop," Sheehan told me. "The Derby and Preakness only confirmed that. This was not the year to get cute. "I'm not straying from the top three." Sheehan pointed out how the Preakness-to-Belmont turnaround is historically difficult, with Justify and American Pharoah being the only horses in recent years to run in both races and emerge victorious at the Belmont. "For that reason, I'm fading Journalism," Sheehan continued. "I'm sticking with my Derby pick, Sovereignty. He's been flawless this year under Junior Alvarado, and it's telling that his Hall of Fame trainer stuck to the plan of skipping the Preakness despite the Triple Crown temptation. "Sovereignty is back on his home track and looks fantastic. He eats up ground in the stretch like no other and, for my money, he remains the best 3-year-old horse in the country. He should be right there." Elsewhere, Florida-based handicapper Kirk Rockwell eyes speed. "Speed has been holding the last two days on Saratoga's main track," Rockwell told me Friday morning. "A speedy frontrunner like Rodriguez could get out front and hang on for dear life." As long as I've known Uncle Kirk, he's zigged while others zag. "Remember, it's a shorter race than usual," Rockwell added. "Rodriguez should be out front early. We'll see if he can finish late at a price." So there you have it, actionable thoughts from successful horse handicappers that are all much, much smarter than I am when it comes to this stuff. Here's what I'm betting on Saturday: $100 [2] Sovereignty to win$50 [3] Rodriguez to win and place $36 three-dollar exacta box with 1-2-3-6 Good luck, all. Gasperini takes over from Ranieri at Roma after successful run at Atalanta
ROME (AP) — Gian Piero Gasperini was named Roma's new coach on Friday, taking over for the retiring Claudio Ranieri following his own successful run at Atalanta. 'I need a significant challenge,' Gasperini said in an interview released by Roma. 'I really believe all the conditions are in place to do good work.' Advertisement He signed a three-year deal for the club owned by Texas-based businessman Dan Friedkin. In nine seasons at Atalanta, Gasperini guided the Bergamo club to a Europa League triumph in 2024, six top-four finishes in Serie A, and a Champions League quarterfinal. The 73-year-old Ranieri was hired in November when Roma was struggling in 12th place, and his contract specified he would take on an advisor role after the season. Rainieri guided Roma to a fifth-place finish as the Giallorossi lost just once during the second half of the season, and was involved in selecting the 67-year-old Gasperini, who is known for his free-flowing attacking tactics. Roma will return to the Europa League. Advertisement Gasperini becomes Roma's fourth coach in the 1 1/2 years since Jose Mourinho was fired, following Daniele De Rossi, Ivan Juric and Ranieri. The only other time Gasperini coached a big Italian club came in 2011 when he lasted just five winless matches at Inter Milan. Gasperini had one season remaining on his contract with Atalanta but announced on Saturday in an open letter published in Bergamo's newspaper to fans that he was leaving. 'Let's not call it a goodbye,' Gasperini wrote in L'Eco di Bergamo. 'I'm ending my term at Bergamo as coach of Atalanta. But everything else will remain unchanged.' In the five seasons since American owner Friedkin took over the club, Roma's only trophy has been the 2022 Conference League. Advertisement Roma has been trying unsuccessfully to build a new stadium for more than a decade. Atalanta did not immediately announce a replacement for Gasperini, with Thiago Motta and Stefano Pioli considered the top contenders for the job. Speculation has also focused on Juric. ___ AP soccer: Andrew Dampf, The Associated Press
