National-level Maal Hijrah celebration to take place at Mitec this Friday
KUALA LUMPUR: The Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) will host the National Maal Hijrah 1447H/2025M celebration at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (Mitec) here this Friday.
Jakim director-general Datuk Dr Sirajuddin Suhaimee said His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim and Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah, the King and Queen of Malaysia are expected to grace the event, which carries the theme Membangun Ummah Madani (Developing a Madani Ummah).
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail are also scheduled to attend the ceremony, which will begin at 9.30am and is expected to draw around 8,000 guests.
These include Cabinet ministers, deputy ministers, heads of government departments and agencies, foreign dignitaries and members of the public.
"This year's celebration aims to highlight the importance of drawing lessons from the hijrah in building a progressive Muslim community," Sirajuddin said in a statement today.
He said a Madani ummah embodies the principle of inclusivity in developing a civilised society, not only in terms of physical development, but also in nurturing spiritually excellent human capital.
The highlight of the event will be a Royal Address by His Majesty, as well as the presentation of the National and International Tokoh Maal Hijrah Awards to individuals who have made significant contributions to Islamic development and the advancement of the ummah.
In conjunction with the celebration, a special prayer ceremony to mark the end and beginning of the Islamic year will take place at 6.30pm this Thursday at Masjid Negara (National Mosque).
The ceremony will be attended by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar, with prayers led by the Grand Imam Ehsan Mohd Hosni. A special tausiyyah (religious lecture) will also be delivered by Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Izhar Ariff Mohd Kashim from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM).
"May this year's Maal Hijrah celebration bring renewed hope and unity to Muslims in Malaysia and around the world, in the spirit of togetherness exemplified by Prophet Muhammad SAW in Madinah," said Sirajuddin.

SEPANG: The President of the Kyrgyz Republic, Sadyr Zhaparov, departed home today after concluding a two-day official visit to Malaysia. Both leaders also witnessed the signing and exchange of several Memoranda of Understanding in the field of tourism, digital transformation and cybersecurity, higher education, health, trade promotion, economic cooperation as well as scientific and research cooperation, and the Exchange of Notes in the fields of youth and training for diplomats, as well as Letter of Intent on legal cooperation. At their press conference, both leaders have agreed to work together in developing Islamic banking and boosting trade in halal products, with Malaysia offering its expertise in both sectors to help develop relevant facilities and services in Kyrgyz Republic. The two leaders also exchanged views on regional and international developments of mutual interest. Zhaparov also undertook a brief tour of the Parliament House in Kuala Lumpur, where he held discussions with Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul and Dewan Negara President Datuk Awang Bemee Awang Ali Basah, before visiting the iconic Petronas Twin Towers. In 2024, the Kyrgyz Republic was Malaysia's fourth-largest trading partner among Central Asian countries, with total bilateral trade valued at RM40 million (USD8.74 million). Malaysia's main exports to the Kyrgyz Republic included electrical and electronic products, palm oil and palm oil-based agricultural products, machinery, equipment and parts. Its key imports from the Kyrgyz Republic comprised chemicals and chemical products, electrical and electronic products, and processed food. Malaysia and the Kyrgyz Republic established diplomatic relations on May 21, 1992, following Kyrgyzstan's independence after the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991.

Upstart socialist Mamdani stuns former governor in NYC mayoral primary
NEW YORK: New York City Democrats chose 33-year-old Muslim socialist Zohran Mamdani as their mayoral candidate in Tuesday's elections, stunning his opponent, former New York governor Andrew Cuomo. In what appears to be the left-leaning city's rebuke of the Democratic Party's veteran moderates, Mamdani led with 43 per cent of the vote with 95 per cent of ballots counted, city officials reported. "Tonight we made history," Mamdani said in his victory speech surrounded by supporters after surging from behind. "We have won because New Yorkers have stood up for a city they can afford," he added. "A city where they can do more than just struggle." The 67-year-old Cuomo, a political veteran who was vying to come back from a sexual harassment scandal, told supporters at an election night party: "Tonight was not our night." He said: "I called him, I congratulated him... he won." The party's primary contest featured almost a dozen candidates seeking to become mayor of the biggest US city, with a population of more than eight million, which is staunchly liberal. The contest is ranked-choice, with voters asked to select five candidates in order of preference, and neither Cuomo nor Mamdani claimed the required majority Tuesday. If no candidate wins 50 per cent of the vote, election officials begin eliminating lowest-ranking candidates and recounting, a process that can take days. With the Democrats reeling nationally from Donald Trump's presidential election win last year, the high-profile city race has done little to calm party nerves. But Mamdani's upbeat campaign, built with youthful social media savvy and campaign promises to improve the city's affordability, appears to have resonated with voters. Cuomo stepped down as New York governor four years ago after multiple women accused him of sexual harassment. He was also accused of mismanaging the state's response to the Covid pandemic. Staunchly pro-Israel Cuomo led in polls for most of the race, with massive name recognition as the son of another New York governor, as well as support from powerful centrist figures including former president Bill Clinton. Mamdani is backed by the Democratic Socialists of America -- the kind of niche, leftist affiliation that might work in the Big Apple but many analysts warn against. The fact that Mamdani speaks out for Palestinians and has accused Israel of "genocide" also makes him a prime target for Trump, who is also a New Yorker. His supporters include two favorite Trump foils -- fiery leftist Senator Bernie Sanders and progressive congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who both congratulated Mamdani. "Billionaires and lobbyists poured millions against you and our public finance system. And you won," Ocasio-Cortez wrote on X. Sanders posted: "You took on the political, economic and media Establishment -- and you beat them." Curtis Sliwa, the Republican candidate, said Mamdani "is too extreme for a city already on edge." Texas Senator Ted Cruz, a Republican, called on New Yorkers to move to his state, which leans Republican. "To all my friends in New York who are not Communists: Come to Texas! We love freedom and we're not nuts," he said on social media. Voters told AFP they saw the ballot as an opportunity to guide party politics. "I see it as a referendum of the Democratic Party, whether we lean more towards the centrist candidate, who's maybe from a different generation of politicians and people in society, or a younger, left-leaning, more ambitious, idealistic party," voter Nicholas Zantal, 31, said. Currently a New York state assemblyman representing the borough of Queens, Mamdani stands out for his energetic campaigning style and eye-catching policy proposals that include freezing rent for many New Yorkers, providing free bus service, and universal childcare. And in a wildly expensive city, where a three-bedroom apartment can easily cost $6,000 a month, his message struck a chord with some. Voter Eamon Harkin, 48, said prices were his "number one issue." "What's at stake is primarily the affordability of New York," he said. But Sheryl Stein, who works in tourism marketing, was skeptical. "I like youth," she said. But Mamdani having "no experience and no proven track record to run the largest city in this country and one of the largest in the world is pretty scary."
