
Take it from locals: Super experience in New Orleans entails more than just the French Quarter
Desiring a more local taste of Big Easy life during Super Bowl week?
There's plenty to explore both in and outside the city center.
Streetcar lines roll to Uptown, Mid-City or City Park. A ferry crosses the Mississippi River to Algiers Point. By car, it's easy to reach Esplanade Ridge; the shops and eateries on Magazine Street or Metairie Road; and seafood spots in Bucktown, along the shore of Lake Pontchartrain.
The Lakeview neighborhood is where you'll find chef Susan Spicer.
She has taken her Louisiana-inspired cuisine to Super Bowl host cities across the country during the past three decades while participating in the Taste of the NFL charity event. She is involved again this year in her hometown, but those who wish to dine in the spot where Spicer does most of her cooking should visit Rosedale Restaurant.
Spicer, whose culinary career has included decades in fine-dining kitchens in the French Quarter and downtown, would by no means advise visitors to eschew the renowned attractions in those historically significant areas.
'There's so much concentrated in the French Quarter, the CBD (central business district) and the Warehouse District, that you can just really get absorbed by everything that's going on there,' Spicer said.
'But if you just venture out a little bit," she added, "there's a lot to discover.'
Political pundit James Carville, a Louisiana native and New Orleans resident, says first-time visitors with just a few days in town shouldn't 'feel like if you're going to the French Quarter, you're not being a local." He says the Friday lunch scene at Galatoire's is 'legendary."
But if you do decide to explore, here are some options:
Popular Neighborhood Spots
— Rosedale: This spot exemplifies the neighborhood restaurant scene in New Orleans, where standards for food are high and must be met for an establishment that can't depend on tourists to make it. The ambiance is casual, the menu includes sandwiches (duck pastrami) and po'boys (cochon de lait), but a lot of work, attention to detail and creativity go into the ingredients and preparation.
— Clancy's. It is located not far from Audubon Park. New Orleans' power brokers are spotted there regularly, as are celebrity residents such as John Goodman, Harry Shearer and members of the Manning family.
Waiters wear tuxedos at this white-table-cloth spot, but the vibe is casual, lively and suitably loud, with diners regularly making the rounds to say hello to friends and acquaintances at other tables or at the compact (and busy) bar area.
— Commander's Palace. It is housed in a historic property across from Lafayette Cemetery in the Garden District and is arguably the city's most famous restaurant. Its list of former chefs that rose to culinary stardom includes Emeril Lagasse.

Gautreau's, La Petite Grocery, Brigtsen's, Mr. John's and Jacque-Imo's in Uptown; Cafe Degas, Mandina's and Liuzza's in Mid-City; Tana in Old Metaire; Station 6 in Bucktown; Rizutto's in Lakeview; and N7 on edge of the Bywater Historic District.
Finding that Big Easy staple: Po'boys
— Domilise's, Tracey's and Mahony's. These are well-regarded Uptown spots.
— In Mid-City, there's Parkway Bakery and Liuzza's by the Track — the latter known for its barbecue shrimp po'boy and sinus-clearing roast beef with horseradish.
— In the Bucktown/Lakeview area, a popular spot is R&O's, across the street from the Lake Pontchartrain levee.
The roast beef in a po'boy usually is slow-cooked, often is called 'debris,' for how it falls apart in the pot, and is served with gravy. Central Poboys in suburban Jefferson has developed a strong reputation for this.
Meanwhile, some no-frills takeout seafood spots around town produce highly regarded shrimp, oyster and catfish po'boys, as well as soft-shell crab when in season. Spicer likes to get her oyster po'boys at Zimmer's Seafood, in the Gentilly neighborhood.
When it's time for dessert
— Angelo Brocato. Some of the best gelato and Italian pastries in the South can be found in this beloved Mid-City landmark, which was just celebrating a 100-year anniversary renovation when it was flooded by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Its 2006 reopening was widely celebrated. It's on the Carrollton branch of the red Canal streetcar line and gets busy when school lets out.
— Creole Creamery — a popular ice cream parlor on Prytania Street in Uptown
— Sucre, also Uptown on Magazine Street, offers French style pastries and gelato.
The locals love beignets, too.
— Cafe Du Monde. While its best known location is in Jackson Square, another is next to the New Orleans Museum of Art and sculpture garden in City Park.
— Morning Call. It's the oldest Cafe du Monde rival in the beignet business. There's one at the end of the cemetery branch of the Canal streetcar line.
When it's cocktail hour
Locals take their cocktails seriously and a number of recipes — such as the Sazerac or Ramos Gin Fizz — originated in New Orleans. When the weather is pleasant, boutique hotel bars on St. Charles are among the places to be.
— The Columns Hotel. This converted historic mansion has inviting outdoor seating beneath a sprawling canopy of massive live oaks and offers views off passing streetcars. A similar option is The Chloe, just four blocks down the avenue.
— Hot Tin. This bar is on the roof of the Pontchartrain Hotel — a few doors down from Mr. John's and just blocks away from Commander's Palace — and offers a panoramic view of New Orleans' skyline from the Superdome to the Crescent City Connection bridge.
— The Paradise Lounge. Located in the Hotel St. Vincent on Magazine Street, its dark wood and marble-top bar and tropical-themed wall paper make for an inviting place to meet friends for a drink in the Lower Garden District.
— Cure. Housed in a handsomely renovated building along the popular Freret Street corridor, Cure is committed to craft cocktails.
— Jewel of the South. This relatively new spot is drawing critical acclaim for its cocktail scene. It is a small, inventive restaurant on the edge of the French Quarter.
If you're looking for live music
— Frenchman Street, which begins where the French Quarter ends at Esplanade Avenue, has several bars or clubs showcasing live traditional and modern jazz, brass, blues, funk and other genres. One is Snug Harbor, among the more sophisticated Jazz spots in the city. DBA, virtually next door, and the Spotted Cat across the street offer multiple options within steps of one another.
— Tipitinas is one of the most revered music venues in town; it is Uptown near the river. Many of New Orleans' best known bands and musicians play there between dates booked with traveling, widely known acts.
— For a more intimate music scene, try the Maple Leaf on Oak Street (next door to Jacque-Imo's); Dos Jefes on Tchoupitoulas Street; or Bacchanal, a rustic wine shop deep in the Bywater with outdoor seating and performances by a regular rotation of musicians.
Some other attractions
— Audubon Park and City Park.
These are beloved public spaces filled with large oak trees adorned with dangling Spanish moss, as well as magnolia trees and subtropical vegetation. Joggers and walkers flock to both (as do migrating birds).
There are challenging public golf courses, as well as other attractions, contained within each of the parks. Audubon has the zoo, City Park has the New Orleans Museum of Art and Sculpture Garden, as well as paddle boats and the Children's Museum.
— Other museum favorites of New Orleans residents include the Ogden Museum of Southern Art and the World War II Museum.

The LAX/Metro Transit Center is opening today—here's what you need to know
L.A. has never been exactly renowned for its public transit, but Metro is working overtime to change that—specifically in time for next year's FIFA World Cup, the 2027 Super Bowl and, of course, the 2028 Olympics. One huge step in the right direction? Starting today, June 6, access to the Los Angeles International Airport —one of the busiest airports in the country—will become more streamlined, thanks to the LAX/Metro Transit Center, the ambitious new station Angelenos have long been asking for. In the words of L.A. Mayor Karen Bass, today marks the 'beginning of a new era in our city.' And to celebrate the big opening, rides across the entire Metro system—rail lines, buses, Metro Bike Share and rideshare service Metro Micro—are free from Friday through Sunday. The LAX/Metro Transit Center officially opened to mariachi music and remarks from city leaders including Mayor Bass, Inglewood Mayor James T. Butts, Metro CEO Stephanie Wiggins and Metro Board Chair Janice Hahn, who joked that the nine most terrifying words in the English language are 'Hey, can you give me a ride to LAX?' Here's hoping the new station means fielding fewer of those dreaded requests from your friends. LAX/Metro Transit Center Station rail and bus connections The new station, located at 9225 Aviation Boulevard, closes the final gap in the K Line, which will now run directly from Expo/Crenshaw to Redondo Beach—the airport-adjacent center fills a gap in that line that used to require you to take a bus to continue south. And it's the new terminus of the C line, which starts in Norwalk (it also connects the C and K lines—an added benefit). If you live along the C or K lines, the station is a godsend for airport visits. But if you don't live in, say, Inglewood or Downey, will this benefit you? Well, as you can see in the map below, these lines also intersect with other lines, meaning that with just one transfer, you can find yourself on a train bound for the airport. The A line (Azusa to Long Beach) allows you to transfer to the C line, and the E line, which reaches all the way from Santa Monica through Downtown and into East L.A., meets up with the K line, meaning those riders can also map a car-free route to LAX. (Though from Santa Monica and Downtown, there are buses that can probably get you to the station more directly and quickly.) In addition to the two light rail lines stopping at the station, the LAX/Metro Transit Center will also serve 14 bus lines—including six Metro bus lines and partner lines including the Big Blue Bus, Culver CityBus, Torrance Transit, GTrans and Beach Cities—with 16 bays for bus transfers. The station will also offer a Metro Micro bay. What about the Automated People Mover? Now, once you've done all the mental navigation and actual navigation of getting to the LAX/Metro Transit Center with your luggage in tow, unfortunately you're not done yet. That's when you'll need to board a free Los Angeles World Airports shuttle to LAX, which will run every 10 minutes and deposit you at your terminal. That's not a bad solution, but it's a placeholder until the long-awaited Automated People Mover is ready—which is projected to finally open in early 2026 (though you can see it doing some test runs through the station now). When that glorious day arrives, the APM will allow travelers to step onto elevated, entirely electric train cars and bypass traffic on their way to the terminals. While the idea has been decades in the making, actual construction on the nearly $900-million project began in 2021, and it's the eighth completed project in Metro's ambitious Twenty-Eight by '28 initiative—which is prioritizing projects that will provide more connectivity to major sports venues for the city's upcoming 'car-free' Olympics. The entire site of the station is approximately 500,000 square feet (the size of almost nine football fields). It boasts 11 elevators, 12 escalators and nine staircases where you can access the bus bays on the ground level or ascend and then descend to the concourse, where you'll find the light rail trains. The MTC will be able to accommodate up to 5,000 passengers an hour. While there aren't dining and shopping options like you'll find in some cities' major transit stations, there are public restrooms, a customer service center and automated storage for 50 bikes. The visual centerpiece is an origami-like spiral sculpture, 'The Distance of the Sun,' by L.A. native artist Glenn Kaino that hangs above the escalators. Elsewhere in the station, digital displays depict 18 poignant portraits of Metro riders created by local artists. There's still more work to be done, but the LAX/Metro Transit Center is an impressive achievement that the city and its residents can be proud of. Any step toward making the airport experience a bit easier and connecting the disparate parts of L.A. is a huge win.

Beyoncé's London Cowboy Carter show made me homesick for a US that doesn't exist
When Beyoncé sang the American national anthem on the first night of her London Cowboy Carter tour dates, I instinctively placed my cowboy hat over my heart, unsure whether I was pledging allegiance to the US flag or Beyoncé herself. As Tottenham Hotspur Stadium filled with (nearly) 62,000 Londoners in chaps, Levi's, cowboy boots, and the occasional bolo tie, I bizarrely felt more connected to the country I left nearly three years ago than I ever did during my final decade living there. That might be because Beyoncé presents a version of the American South not as it is, but as it could be: inclusive, textured, full of contradiction and pride, defiant of unjust power structures, and rooted in the stories of people who refused to disappear – no matter how hard the world tried to erase them. This defiance is nothing new for her. Beyoncé has long navigated the delicate balance between American patriotism and protest. She's been criticized for everything from her 2016 Super Bowl performance that paid tribute to the Black Panthers, to her support of Black Lives Matter, to the visual album Lemonade, which unapologetically explored infidelity, rage, and Black womanhood. And then there's the country music establishment, which has famously tried to keep Beyonce on the outside. Which is why this concert felt revolutionary in a time of political was reclaiming a genre, a flag, and a cultural identity, not just for herself, but for everyone who's ever been told they don't belong. While I was moved to tears repeatedly by this message, I did wonder if the concert didn't strike an interesting chord with a UK crowd. Could it be alienating to anyone who didn't grow up listening to Willie Nelson in the backseat of their daddy's pickup? Maybe. But it doesn't matter. Even if the images of pioneering black country singer Sister Rosetta Thorpe were lost on you or if you didn't immediately recognise a famous Texas line dance when it broke out on stage, the power of the performance could not be ignored. While the country album's contents take up almost half the set, there was something for everyone. Fans were treated to Crazy In Love, If I Were A Boy, Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It), a very short rendition of To the Left, Daddy Lessons from Lemonade, and several hits from Renaissance. It's a goose-bump-inducing pleasure just to watch her strut the length of the stage and flip her hair, so when she joins in the choreography, it feels like staggering generosity from a star with nothing left to prove. Perhaps the most moving moment of the show came when the singer stood completely motionless in a dress that, via projection, changed colors and designs in sync with the soaring notes of the song Daughter. It's a song that references the violence and toxic Christianity woven into the fabric of Southern culture, and when she sings:'Now I ripped your dress and you're all black and blue/ Look what you made me do..' it's with all the power and perspective of a Shakespearan monologue. So when a message that read, 'THIS IS THEATRE' later flashed across the screen, it felt undeniably true. Almost counterintuitively, becoming the most famous person in the world allows Beyoncé the freedom to be herself. She grinned at the crowd after every voice in the place shouted along to Box to the Left, giggling and saying into the mic: 'Did y'all know every world to that thang? Did that just happen like that?' One of the most talked-about moments of the night came during her performance of Protector. As she sang, her eldest daughter, Blue Ivy – who performs as a backup dancer throughout the show – stood just behind her. Then, to a roar of surprise and delight from the crowd, seven-year-old Rumi walked on stage and wrapped her arms around her mother in a tender hug. There had been speculation about whether Rumi would appear during the London shows, so the eruption of cheers visibly delighted the little girl, and Beyoncé's beaming smile read as nothing but genuine pride. With another artist, this level of family involvement might risk feeling gimmicky or even exploitative. But Beyoncé – who's long past the point of doing anything she doesn't want to – makes it feel like something else entirely: a mother sharing her passion with her daughters and loving them boldly, in front of the world. More Trending My only criticism worth mentioning has nothing to do with Beyonce or her crew. Bizarrely, given that it's a football stadium, the venue seemed startlingly unprepared for the crowd's exit. A chaotic queue system for the overground descended into confused chaos, and buses literally passed by crowds of concertgoers, unwilling or unable to take on the cowboy-hat-clad masses. But a two-and-a-half hour journey home is a small price to pay for a night that combined the best of stadium concerts, political commentary, theatre, and star power so bright it was almost blinding.
