Spartanburgers drop series finale to Grasshoppers, 9-4

GREENSBORO, N.C. (Hub City Spartanburgers) — Early offense came in droves on a sunny Sunday at First National Bank Field as the Greensboro Grasshoppers (37-18) out-slugged the Hub City Spartanburgers (30-27) by a 9-4 final to even the series at three games apiece. Five home runs, two of which were hit by Spartanburgers, electrified the crowd early on. The first big swing came against 'Burgers' starter JoseGonzalez (L, 1-5) in the bottom of the first when Javier Rivas smacked a two-run homer. AnthonyGutierrez and Keith Jones II went yard for Hub City, but the Grasshoppers pounded two more off the Spartanburgers righty. Gonzalez allowed six total runs, five of which were earned, through 3 1/3 innings. The Spartanburgers tagged Greensboro right-hander Hung-Leng Chang for four runs through four innings. LuisMarquez got the 'Burgers on the board in the second with an RBI double. Marquez finished the week with six hits and four RBIs through three games. Gutierrez cleared the fences in the third with his second homer of the season, and Jones belted longball number seven to bring home both himself and Marquez in the top of the fourth. The Jones home run tied the game at 4-4 after the top of the fourth, but Greensboro put a crooked number on the board in the bottom half to take the lead for good. The Grasshoppers' third homer of the game barely snuck over the left-center field wall. Reliever AdonisVillavicencio allowed another run on two singles and a ground ball. Both bullpens quieted the opposing offenses after the fourth. Grasshoppers' reliever J.P. Massey (W, 3-0) tossed two scoreless innings while JoshMollerus and VictorSimeon put three zeros on the scoreboard for Hub City. Greensboro scored two in the eighth against Anthony Susac. Up next for the Spartanburgers is a six-game set at Fifth Third Park against the High-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, the Wilmington Blue Rocks. First pitch of the opener Tuesday is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. ET. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

How social media reacted to UNC's baseball season ending against Arizona in Super Regional

How social media reacted to UNC's baseball season ending against Arizona in Super Regional There was a dejected feeling across social media after UNC's baseball season came to a close on Sunday. After an 18-2 explosion against Arizona on Friday afternoon, the North Carolina Tar Heels found themselves one victory away from a second-consecutive trip to the College World Series. UNC led late in Game 2 of the Chapel Hill Super Regional Saturday, but its bullpen faltered late in a 10-8 loss. North Carolina held another late lead Sunday, leading 3-1, but that didn't last long. Diamond Heels captain Jackson Van De Brake botched a would-be double play ball in the eighth inning, with Arizona soon after taking the lead by scoring three runs. UNC's offense remained stagnant after escaping the eighth, with UNC losing 4-3 – and watching its hopes of a second-straight CWS berth come to a screeching halt. North Carolina (46-15) fell behind early in Game 3, just like it did on Saturday, but took the lead on more clutch hitting. Van De Brake, who walked four times against the Wildcats (44-19), smoked a 3-run, third-inning home run on a line drive just over the left field wall. The Diamond Heels couldn't muster much after Van De Brake's bomb, though, minus a couple baserunners. UNC didn't get a single runner on base in the ninth inning, with Tyson Bass, Sam Angelo and Carter French all going hitless. Ryan Lynch, typically a long-relief option for North Carolina out of the bullpen, pitched phenomenal on Sunday before being pulled in the eighth inning. Diamond Heels closer Walker McDuffie struggled again in relief, recording just one out, giving up a hit and walking one batter, while his lone unearned run was the eventual game-winning for Arizona. Let's take a look at social media and see the college baseball world's reaction to UNC's loss, which was a heartbreaker considering how UNC was two innings away from Omaha: Comparing UNC's choke to the Dallas Cowboys Arizona is loving life right now UNC didn't score the offense went cold Van De Brake helped get UNC to Supers Disagreement about the ending of Game 3 UNC couldn't cash in on its best team in years This was supposed to be the year Tar Heel Nation feels your pain Don't jump to conclusions Tyson Bass struggled Sunday after a big Game 2 Van De Brake gave UNC the easy on him Did fielding and pitching cost UNC a chance at Omaha? Thank you to the Diamond Heels' veterans Mistakes came at the worst time kids are still in college Ryan Lynch gave UNC a chance to win If you just started watching UNC during the NCAA quiet The talent was result wasn't Postseason baseball is weird

UNC women's basketball team's top reserve earns Team USA Basketball invite

UNC women's basketball team's top reserve earns Team USA Basketball invite One of the UNC women's basketball team's top guards earned a pretty exclusive offseason honor. For the Red, White & Blue 🇺🇸 Congrats Lanie on earning an invite to USA Basketball's Women's U19 Trials! — Carolina Women's Basketball (@uncwbb) June 5, 2025 The UNC women's basketball team is fresh off one of its best seasons under head coach Courtney Banghart, advancing to the Sweet 16 for the second time in four seasons. A major portion of North Carolina's success came from its veteran trio of Alyssa Ustby, Maria Gakdeng and Lexi Donarski, who played their final year of college basketball. The Tar Heels welcomed a few high school recruits to Chapel Hill, while lucking out in the transfer portal. One of UNC's greatest additions was sixth woman Lanie Grant, the 2024 Virginia Gatorade Player of the Year. In two starts across 37 games played for North Carolina, Grant averaged 7.3 points per game (best amongst reserves). Just three months removed from her freshman season, Grant received some big news, earning an invite to the USA Basketball Women's U19 Trials on June 18. Grant, one of 27 athletes selected, has an opportunity to make the final, 12-player roster. The 2025 FIBA U19 Women's World Cup will take place July 12-20 in Brno, Czech Republic. Though she came off the bench for most of the Tar Heels' games last season, Grant delivered a major impact. Grant scored in double digits 11 times, netting a career-high 19 points during UNC's 79-75 win at Louisville on February 23. Grant will likely be asked to step into a starting role during North Carolina's upcoming campaign, replacing Lexi Donarski as a starting guard. The Tar Heels will have a younger, new-look roster, with Grant poised to take on a leadership role in just Year Two.
