Union Health Minister JP Nadda chairs high level review meeting on emergency health systems preparedness
New Delhi [India], May 9 (ANI): Union Health Minister JP Nadda chaired a high-level meeting on Friday with senior health ministry officers to review emergency health systems preparedness.
The current status of medical preparedness for handling emergency cases was presented to the Union Minister. He was apprised of the actions taken regarding deployment of ambulances, ensuring adequate availability of medical supplies, including equipment, medicines, and blood vials and consumables, hospital readiness in terms of beds, ICU, and HDU, deployment of BHISHM Cubes, advanced mobile trauma care units, etc.
Hospitals and medical institutions have been advised to ensure the availability of essential drugs, an adequate supply of blood, oxygen, trauma care kits, etc.
AIIMS New Delhi and other central government hospitals have mobilised doctors and nurses with supplies for ready deployment. They have been advised to coordinate with state and district administration, armed forces and regional associations of doctors, nurses, paramedics, private sector hospitals, charitable institutions, etc., to strengthen the emergency response networks in a collaborative manner.
Additionally, nationwide mock drills for disaster preparedness have been conducted at AIIMS, PGIMER, JIPMER and other premier hospitals.
To build capacity in emergency healthcare, additional training modules for CPR, first aid, and basic life support are being rolled out with support from the Indian Red Cross Society, the National Institute of Health & Family Welfare (NIHFW), AIIMS New Delhi, and iGOT.
Union Health Secretary apprised about a series of her meetings with states/UTs, and central government hospitals and healthcare institutes for seamless coordination with relevant stakeholders at the centre and within the states for ensuring effective response.
Union Health Minister has directed to ensure that all medical emergency response health systems be adequately equipped and functional at all times. He also directed the implementation of ground-level linkages with all state governments, particularly at the district levels, especially border states, to be effectively established to ensure immediate emergency healthcare, if required. He also directed that a 24*7 control and command centre in the Ministry should monitor ongoing efforts and support states in the present times.
Union Health Ministry is closely monitoring the situation and remains committed to ensuring uninterrupted healthcare services and emergency response across all regions. (ANI)

States have been instructed to ensure oxygen availability, isolation beds, ventilators, and essential medicines. Given the recent increase in COVID-19 cases in India, a series of technical review meetings were held on June 2 and 3 with various representatives under the chairpersonship of Dr Sunita Sharma, Director General of Health Services (DGHS). According to an official statement, the representatives include Disaster Management Cell, Emergency Management Response (EMR) Cell, National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) and Central Government Hospitals in Delhi and with representatives from all States and UTs to evaluate the current COVID-19 situation and preparedness measures. Diagnostic chains plan to scale up as Covid cases surge
New Delhi: Leading diagnostic chains are looking to scale up their operations amid surging Covid-19 cases in the country. Executives said they were seeing a "noticeable" spike in the testing, particularly RT-PCR and rapid antigen tests . However, there is little consensus on taking booster shots. "To ensure prompt service, we've enhanced our testing capacity, streamlined workflows, and reinforced staffing, even extending working hours. Rapid RT-PCR machines and AI-based analytics have been integrated to reduce turnaround times and now average 4-6 hours for urgent cases," said Dr. Shelly (Mittal) Mahajan, lab director & clinical lead at Mahajan Imaging & Labs. India's Covid cases have crossed 6,000 with 358 new cases being reported in the last 24 hours. According to data by the Union health ministry, Kerala has been the most affected by Covid-19, with as many as 1,957 active cases. Gujarat saw the maximum increase of 158 cases since yesterday followed by Karnataka (57), West Bengal (54) and Delhi with 42 new cases. However, booster shots are not needed at this point, said Anurag Agrawal, Dean, Biosciences and Health Research at the Ashoka university. Dr RR Dutta, HoD, internal medicine, Paras Health, Gurugram said the virus can adversely affect vital organs such as the lungs, heart, kidneys, and even the brain in severe cases. "Preventive measures such as avoiding unnecessary gatherings and staying up to date with Covid-19 vaccinations and booster doses remain essential to reduce transmission risk and safeguard public health." Surendran Chemmenkotil, CEO, Metropolis Healthcare Ltd said that they have too seen a threefold increase in Covid-19 testing volumes.

Proton therapy centre planned at KMIO
Bengaluru: Proposing to set up a proton therapy centre at Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology (KMIO), the govt has sought financial assistance from the Centre. Medical education minister Sharan Prakash Patil submitted a proposal to Union health minister JP Nadda, requesting Rs 500-crore grant to establish the facility. KMIO handles over 21,000 new cancer cases annually. The proposed facility will introduce proton therapy — a targeted form of radiation treatment known for its ability to minimize damage to surrounding healthy tissues while treating tumours. "Unlike conventional radiotherapy using gamma rays or X-rays, proton therapy delivers precise radiation to the tumour site with reduced impact on nearby organs. It is estimated that over 1.2 lakh patients in India may require proton therapy by 2025. The facility at KMIO will also support referral cases from Nimhans and Indira Gandhi Institute of Child Health," Patil said in his letter.
