Roblox gives parents more power over children's activity on gaming platform
Parents can now block their children from communicating with specific friends or playing certain games on Roblox, an online gaming platform popular with children.
The changes form part of a suite of safety updates intended to give parents more control over their child's experience on the platform.
From Wednesday, parents and caregivers who identify themselves with an ID or credit card will have access to three new tools. The friend management tool means they can block anyone on their child's friends list, preventing their child from exchanging direct messages with that account, and report people they believe are violating Roblox policies.
They can also review and change the content maturity level for their child's account, determining which games their child can access, and obtain detailed screen-time insights.
Under the Online Safety Act, which came into force this year, tech companies must tackle harmful content on their platforms or face fines of up to £18m or 10% of global revenue.
There have been reports of bullying and grooming on Roblox and fears that children are being exposed to explicit or harmful content on the site, which is the most popular platform in the UK among gamers aged eight to 12.
Roblox's chief safety officer, Matt Kaufman, said safety was at the company's core and its mission was to be 'the safest and most civil online platform in the world'.
The US-based company is one of the world's largest games platforms, with more monthly users than Nintendo Switch and Sony PlayStation combined. In 2024, the site averaged more than 80 million players a day, and roughly 40% of those were under 13.
Roblox introduced 40 safety updates last year, including preventing users under 13 from sending direct messages. Roblox has also updated its voice safety technology, which uses a machine-learning model to moderate chat between players more accurately than human moderators.
Andy Burrows, the chief executive of the Molly Rose Foundation, said he welcomed the safety improvements but that 'Roblox still needs to get to grips with substantial problems with harmful and age-inappropriate content'.
He added: 'Extensive research has shown Roblox is awash with age-inappropriate games and communities, including depression rooms that can compound misery and offer no support to vulnerable children.

'This content raises fundamental questions about Roblox's broader commitment to safety and shows it cannot just rely on parental controls but must take decisive action to make the platform safe for its young users.'
Last month, Roblox's co-founder and chief executive, David Baszucki, said the platform was vigilant in protecting its users and that 'tens of millions' of people had 'amazing experiences' on the site.
He added: 'My first message would be: if you're not comfortable, don't let your kids be on Roblox. That sounds a little counterintuitive, but I would always trust parents to make their own decisions.'

TikTok to create over 500 new jobs in the UK
TikTok plans to create over 500 new jobs in the UK and open a second London office after reaching 30 million users in the country, making the UK its largest European user base. The expansion aims to increase TikTok's UK workforce to 3,000 employees this year, with a new 135,000-square-foot office in London's Barbican set to open in early 2025. Adam Presser, director of TikTok UK, emphasized the company's commitment to the UK market through job creation, innovation investment, and contributions from British businesses on the platform. The announcement follows scrutiny of social media usage among children, with the UK government considering measures to limit screen time, despite the recent passage of the Online Safety Act. TikTok is appealing a 530 million euro fine issued by the Irish data protection watchdog for violating EU privacy rules related to user data transfers to China and a lack of transparency.

TikTok creating more than 500 new British jobs as UK users top 30 million
The Chinese-owned social media firm said its UK workforce would expand to 3,000 this year as part of its 'deep commitment' to the UK. It will also open a new 135,000sq ft office in London's Barbican, which is set to open early next year. The group already has its UK headquarters in Farringdon, London, which were opened in 2022. TikTok unveiled the plans as it said it now has more than 30 million regular users in the UK each month, which makes the market is biggest user community in Europe. Adam Presser, director of TikTok UK and global head of operations and trust and safety, said: 'Whether through direct investment in jobs and innovation, or the wider economic contribution from millions of British businesses on TikTok, we're pleased to be increasing our investment and presence here in the UK, an important hub for TikTok.' But it comes after Cabinet minister Pete Kyle signalled he was looking at measures to restrict the amount of time children spend on their phones, including through a possible 10pm curfew. Mr Kyle was asked on Sunday morning whether he would look at limiting the time children spend on social media to two hours per app after the Sunday People and Mirror reported the measure was being considered by ministers. The Online Safety Act has passed into law, and from this year will require tech platforms to follow new Ofcom-issued codes of practice to keep users safe online, particularly children. Hefty fines and site blockages are among the penalties for those caught breaking the rules, but many critics have argued the approach gives tech firms too much scope to regulate themselves. TikTok's Mr Presser said that, as well as its UK expansion plans, the group also invests 'significantly' in safety. He said: 'What underpins our continued growth is our deep commitment to safety and to creating an enjoyable and secure digital space to sustainably support creators, entrepreneurs and the wider economy, which is why we also invest significantly in safety.' TikTok first launched its UK operations in 2018 and is financially incorporated in Britain. The group was fined 530 million euro (£446 million) by the Irish data protection watchdog last month for breaching EU privacy rules around transferring user data to China. The video-sharing app was also sanctioned for not being transparent with users about where personal data was being sent and ordered the platform to comply with data protection rules within six months. TikTok said it would appeal against the decision. The social media giant, which is owned by China-based ByteDance, has been under scrutiny from regulators around the world over how it handles personal data, and is also facing a ban in the United States over its China links, which the US government has said is a national security issue.

Xbox reveals two brand new consoles to take on the Nintendo Switch 2 and they're launching in time for Christmas
MICROSOFT has finally launched a handheld Xbox console after years of speculation. And it'll be available just in time for Christmas this year in the UK and the US. 2 Rather than being entirely Microsoft -made, the new ROG Xbox Ally devices come as part of a collaboration with ASUS, which has already dabbled in handheld gaming. There are two models, the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X. The latter has a more powerful chip inside, alongside bigger memory, storage, battery and more ports available too. Both will allow players to access their Game Pass subscription library on the go. But you can enjoy content from and other "leading PC storefronts" too. Users can play natively, via the cloud, or remotely with their Xbox console in another room. "Whether you're at home or on the go, your favorite games should follow you," explained Xbox head of gaming devices Roanne Sones. "With Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta) or Remote Play, you can access your full Xbox console library and keep playing—wherever you are." As part of the move, Roblox will be among the launch titles with a version optimised for handheld gaming. But pricing has not been announced just yet. The Sun tries new Nintendo Switch 2 and Mario Kart before it's out The existing ASUS ROG Ally X handheld gaming console costs about £800 / $800. "Only way price is significantly cheaper is if Microsoft subsidize and takes part of the loss," one gamer speculated on Reddit. "The only way this thing retails for under $700 is if Microsoft really, REALLY wants to prove the viability of their new Windows gaming variant," another wrote. It comes just days after Nintendo launched its brand new Switch 2 console. NINTENDO SWITCH 2: FIRST THOUGHTS By Jamie Harris, Assistant Technology and Science Editor at The Sun I was among the first members of the press to get hands-on with the console before the general public, at a special event in Paris in April. The first thing you will notice is the display is vastly improved. It's not a glossy OLED but does support 1080p and the screen itself is bigger too, measuring in at 7.9 inches wide. The frame rate is 120 fps, meaning popular titles play super smooth compared to the last Switch. Some much-loved previous titles have been upgraded to take in the enhancements and are dubbed "Switch 2 Edition". I got a flavour of the new Mario Kart World game among the hands-on, though I didn't get to try out every mode. There are some fun new mechanics, such as the ability to grind, as well as exciting new items.
