"Necessary to intensify pilgrimage, tourism activities in Uttarakhand": CM Dhami

India Gazette11 hours ago

Dehradun (Uttarakhand) [India], June 18 (ANI): Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Wednesday reiterated the importance of strengthening pilgrimage and tourism activities to ensure the holistic development of Uttarakhand.
CM Dhami said that it is necessary to intensify pilgrimage and tourism activities in all areas for the overall development of Uttarakhand.
Referring to the state as Devbhoomi, he emphasised that every temple here holds unique religious significance.
'The state government is committed to enhancing basic infrastructure across all pilgrimage sites. Uttarakhand is Devbhoomi, here every temple has its own importance. The government is trying to develop basic facilities at all pilgrimage sites,' said CM Dhami.
This year, the Chardham Yatra has seen a remarkable influx, with around 32 lakh pilgrims visiting the holy shrines so far.
Notably, devotees are increasingly exploring other temples and spiritual destinations alongside the main Chardham circuit. As a result, economic activity is expanding beyond the traditional pilgrimage routes.
As per an official release, during the current Yatra season, total registrations for Chardham and Hemkund Sahib have crossed 44 lakh.
Among them, Yamunotri has recorded 7,13,456 registrations, Gangotri 7,80,554, Kedarnath 14,43,513, Badrinath 13,36,923, and Hemkund Sahib 1,69,180.
Of these, nearly 32 lakh pilgrims have already completed their journeys, significantly boosting the local economy along these routes.
In line with this, CM Dhami has been actively promoting visits to lesser-known pilgrimage sites to further stimulate regional economic growth.
This strategy is already yielding results, with increasing footfall at temples like the Kartikeya Swami Temple in Rudraprayag and the Jagannath Temple in Uttarkashi.
Last year, approximately 4 lakh devotees visited the Kartikeya Swami Temple. This year, that number has surged past 10 lakh by mid-June. Similarly, the Jagannath Temple has welcomed 25,000 pilgrims so far.
This growing interest in peripheral pilgrimage sites is driving parallel growth in hospitality, transport, prasad offerings, and other related sectors, providing vital support to local livelihoods across the state. (ANI)

A ‘special gift' by Croatian PM: What did Modi receive in Zagreb?

During his visit to Zagreb, Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a 'special gift' from Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković: a reprint of Vezdin's Sanskrit Grammar. The gesture carries significant cultural significance, symbolising the centuries-old connection between India and Croatia. Vezdin's Sanskrit Grammar is the first printed Sanskrit grammar written in Latin. It was published in 1790 by Croatian scholar and missionary Filip Vezdin during his time in India Prime Minister Plenković also presented Modi with a book on Croatia–India bilateral relations titled Croatia & India: Bilateral Navigator for Diplomats and Business, authored by Croatian diplomat Sinisa Grgic, according to ANI. The two leaders discussed ways to strengthen economic cooperation, including trade, investment, and tourism. They signed agreements in areas like agriculture, culture, science, and technology, ANI reported. Plenkovic also recognised India as an important trading partner, saying, 'India is an important Asian trading partner for Croatia.' He also stated that last year, the exchange amounted to 242 million USD, while trade increased by 10% in the first three months of 2025. At the same time, the number of Indian tourists visiting is also growing. With the agreements signed today in different sectors, we want to strengthen cooperation in the ICT, pharmaceutical industry, and maritime transport sectors, said Plenkovic. According to the news agency, earlier in the day, Plenkovic welcomed PM Modi to Zagreb, the Prime Minister of India's first-ever visit to hold delegation-level talks. In a post on X, the Croatian leader said, 'We welcomed Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Zagreb! This is the first ever visit by the Prime Minister of India, the most populous country in the world, which comes at an important geopolitical moment. We are starting a new chapter in India-Croatia relations and are creating conditions for strengthening bilateral cooperation in multiple areas and sectors.' PM Modi interacted with members of the Indian diaspora here on Wednesday as he arrived at a hotel in Zagreb, Croatia, marking the final stop of his three-nation tour. According to news agency reports, India's visit to Croatia will also underscore its commitment to further strengthening its engagement with European Union partners.

Israel-Iran Conflict: 'Ensuring smooth journey home,' CM Omar after evacuated students flag ‘poor' condition of buses

Israel-Iran Conflict: A group of students evacuated under Operation Sindhu from war-torn Iran raised issues about the buses provided by the Jammu and Kashmir government for their onward journey to Kashmir from Delhi. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah responded by saying that the issue has been looked into and that he has directed the officials to ensure that proper deluxe buses are arranged for the students. 'The buses that have been provided are in such bad condition that even animals will not travel in them. We can't go in such buses, and our safety could have been compromised. We are here (in Delhi) and for that we are thankful to the central government as they have evacuated us smoothly, we faced no problem till here, but we are having a problem here now,' a student was heard telling news agency ANI. The about 800 km road distance from Delhi to Kashmir via Jammu typically takes 18 to 22 hours, depending on traffic, weather, and road conditions. The first flight carrying about 110 students, who were evacuated to Armenia from war-torn Iran, landed in Delhi in the early hours on June 19. Of these 94 students are from Jammu and Kashmir These students in Tehran were moved out of the city, 110 of them crossing the border into Armenia, through arrangements made by the Indian Embassy on June 17 under 'Operation Sindhu' amid escalating conflict between Israel and Iran. From Delhi these students from Jammu and Kashmir would be transported to Jammu and Kashmir in Jammu and Kashmir State Tourism Corporation (JKSRTC) buses. But the students said that the condition of the buses was bad "The buses that have been provided are in such bad condition that even animals will not travel in them. We can't go in such buses, and our safety could have been compromised. We are here (in Delhi) and for that we are thankful to the central government as they have evacuated us smoothly, we faced no problem till here, but we are having a problem here now," another student told news agency ANI. The Chief Minister has taken note of the request of the students evacuated from Iran regarding the quality of buses arranged to transport them from Delhi to J&K, the CM office informed in a post on X. The CM office said the government is making transport arrangements to ensure their smooth journey home, which will be in place within the next few hours. 'The Resident Commissioner has been tasked with coordinating with the JKRTC to ensure proper deluxe buses are arranged,' it said. The evacuated students travelled from northern Iran by road to the Armenian capital, Yerevan, under the supervision of Indian missions in Iran and Armenia. After reaching the Armenian capital, the students soon departed Yerevan on a special flight at 2:45 pm on June 18. They arrived in New Delhi in the early hours of June 19 as part of the initial stages of Operation Sindhu, the MEA said. The deadly conflict between Iran and Israel entered its sixth day on June 18, with both sides widening their attacks. Israeli strikes on Iran have so far killed at least 639 people and wounded 1,329 others, a human rights group was quoted as saying by the news agency AP. The buses that have been provided are in such bad condition that even animals will not travel in them.
