Johns Island resort one of the best new hotels in the world, travel magazine says
JOHNS ISLAND, S.C. (WCBD) – A 72 room resort that sits on the bank of the Kiawah River is one of the best new hotels in the world, according to AFAR.
The Dunlin, an Auberge Resorts Collection retreat made the list of 25 published Thursday by the travel magazine.
AFAR loved the colorful interiors of the space and the fresh seafood direct from the Lowcountry. Rooms start around $749 a night on average.
'Hugging a gentle curve in the Kiawah River, this Auberge Resorts Collection retreat sits 35 minutes by car southwest of Charleston yet feels worlds away in its serene marshland setting. The hotel, which opened in August 2024, captures the breezy nostalgia of a vintage coastal summerhouse thanks to designer Amanda Lindroth, who filled the 52 guest rooms and 20 suites with soaking tubs, four-poster beds, and antique birding books. By day, guests can explore the Lowcountry on naturalist-led kayak and boat trips, cycle beneath the moss-draped live oaks, or unwind with an organic facial or glass of wine by the waterfront pool. At sundown, they're invited out to the porch for Southern-inspired cocktail classes highlighting local spirits, before a dinner of warm blue crab dip and buttermilk-fried oysters at the seafood-focused restaurant Linnette's.'

Rooms at the luxury hotel were inspired by sea cottages with honey oak floors and mint green accents across white-washed rooms.
Planning for the property began 20 years ago, according to John Darby, president of the Beach Company, which developed the space. When it came time to implement the plans everything went right, he said.

'Everything we had planned and hoped for is falling into place, and we'll be able to look back in 2025, 2026 and say, gee, this really worked, and I'm confident it will.' Darby said when the resort was originally opened.

Beloved UWS eatery Jacob's Pickles shuttered for roaches, rats, sewage
Upper West Side eatery Jacob's Pickles was abruptly shuttered this week following a slew of icky code violations. The Department of Health temporarily closed the Southern-style dining hotspot after the place showed evidence of rats and roaches. The restaurant was also cited for having an 'improper, inadequate, or unapproved' sewage disposal system. Jacob's Pickles has had a C rating with the Department of Health since December. Owner Jacob Hadjigeorgis said in May 2024 he would move the American restaurant to a new location at 688 Columbus Ave., between 93rd and 94th Streets, after which he planned to open a new bar, Velvet Cowboy, inside the space Jacob's Pickles had occupied. It's unclear if Hadjigeorgis' plans have changed.

Steve Bannon Calls Musk ‘National Security Issue,' Says He 'May Be Here Illegally'
Former Trump adviser Steve Bannon seized an opportunity to air his grievances with Elon Musk amid the SpaceX founder's blowup with President Donald Trump. In a Friday interview with NPR, Bannon was asked about prior comments that Trump should cancel all government contracts with Musk. The tech mogul's companies, which include Tesla, SpaceX and artificial intelligence startup xAI, have been given billions in federal dollars over the years, according to The New York Times. 'I think we have as a country a national security issue here,' Bannon said Friday, adding that Musk has a reportedly 'massive drug problem' and a 'deep financial and business relationship' with China. The MAGA podcaster continued, 'And we know he's asked for private briefings of top secret information.' The Wall Street Journal reported in March that Musk had requested a Pentagon briefing on plans for a potential war with China. Trump told reporters at the time that Musk would not see the plans, citing his business ties to China as a conflict of interest. The formerly Musk-led Department of Government Efficiency, a team tasked with rooting out supposed fraud and waste within the federal government, has drawn scrutiny over its access to classified materials and the personal information of U.S. citizens. Bannon then doubled down on his call to investigate Musk's immigration status. 'You have someone whose legal status is in question,' he told NPR, adding that you 'can't deport people from all over the world' and 'leave a white South African, who may be here illegally, here.' Bannon, who pleaded guilty this year to scamming people who donated money towards building a wall at the U.S. Southern border, added, 'It's just not right.' Capitol Hill steakhouse to temporarily close while owner shuts down multiple café locations
This story was originally published on A collection of restaurants and eateries run by James Beard Award-winning Seattle chef Renee Erickson is set to close, with some locations closing either temporarily or permanently. Bateau, a contemporary steakhouse, and Boat Bar, a French-inspired oyster bar, are shutting down temporarily on June 19. Both restaurants are expected to reopen in the next three to six months. 'We're incredibly proud of what Bateau and Boat Bar have brought to Seattle's dining scene,' Erickson said in a prepared statement. 'This closure will allow us the time and space to refresh and retool these restaurants after a long 10 years, so they can evolve and continue to inspire.' However, Beataeu's next-door neighbor, The General Porpoise café, also owned and operated by Erickson, is set to close permanently in order to be converted into a private dining room. The General Porpoise location in Laurelhurst is also closing permanently by June 24. These restaurants fall under the umbrella of Sea Creatures Restaurants, a network of eateries locally owned and operated by Erickson and partners. Sea Creatures Restaurants also owns Willmott's Ghost, The Whale Wins, The Walrus and the Carpenter, Barnacle Bar, Deep Dive, Westward, and Lioness. The closures, both permanent and temporary, came after a unionization effort led by some Sea Creatures employees earlier this year, according to The Seattle Times. 'We are comfortable with the union,' Sea Creatures Restaurants co-owner Jeremy Price told The Seattle Times. 'That's an employee's right, and we are all good with that.' Erickson and Price's goal is to relocate all doughnut shop employees working at the now-permanently closed General Porpoise cafés to the remaining locations.
