Odisha gears up to celebrate one yr of Govt in June
Bhubaneswar, May 18 (UNI) Odisha is preparing to celebrate the completion of one year of the current government in June with a series of events at the state, district, and block levels.
According to official sources, the government will conduct various programmes from June 11 to June 13 to inform the public about the significant achievements made over the past year, particularly in the implementation of various welfare schemes.
A state-level public meeting and development exhibition will be held at Janata Maidan in Bhubaneswar during these three days. Simultaneously, similar events and programmes will be organized at the district and block levels.
These events will focus on the implementation and objectives of several government schemes, aiming to raise public awareness about the initiatives undertaken for the welfare of the people. Additionally, exhibitions in collaboration with district administrations and ORMAS will be held over five days.
A preparatory meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja directed various government departments to organize thematic and cultural programmes as part of the celebration. The event will include technical discussions, cultural performances, and public meetings.
The Department of Information and Public Relations will publish a comprehensive book highlighting the achievements of various departments over the past year. Individual departments have also been advised to release their own publications.
The publication will cover a range of topics including village development and mission, agriculture, irrigation, education and training, water resources, and public administration. It will also showcase the success of various public welfare initiatives, particularly in the areas of agriculture, poverty alleviation, and the upliftment of backward classes and marginalized communities.
Success stories from key government schemes and initiatives will be shared with the press for broader public dissemination.
As part of the celebrations, a special artist camp will be organized by the State Culture Department in collaboration with the Lalit Kala Academy.
Furthermore, the Chief Secretary has proposed essay competitions for school and college students on the theme of their vision for "Viksit Odisha by 2033" and "Viksit India by 2047."
An official source stated that a committee has been constituted under the Additional Chief Secretary of the Home Department to oversee and coordinate the entire programme.

Covid-19 delayed Census 2021; southern states' concerns will be take care of: MHA
New Delhi, June 5 (UNI) Attributing the delay in conducting Census 2021 to the COVID-19 outbreak, the Ministry of Home Affairs on Thursday said the concerns of the southern states regarding the delimitation process will be taken care of with all concerned at an appropriate time. The Ministry said on X that Home Minister Amit Shah had repeatedly clarified that concerns of southern states regarding the delimitation exercise will be taken care of and discussed with all concerned at an appropriate time. "Census 2021 was to be conducted and all preparations for the Census were completed. However, due to outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic across the country, the Census work was postponed. The aftershock of Covid-19 continued for quite some time," the MHA said. The Ministry said that a key challenge was the involvement of approximately 30 lakh enumerators, most of whom are primary school teachers. Conducting the Census immediately after Covid could have severely disrupted primary education. "COVID disrupted all sectors, including education. Around 30 lakh enumerators are needed for the Census. Enumerators, who are primary school teachers, are key persons for conducting Census. Conducting the Census after Covid could have disrupted primary education immensely," the MHA post said. "Countries which conducted Census immediately after COVID-19 faced issues with the quality and coverage of Census data. The Government has decided to commence the process of census forthwith, which will be completed on March 1, 2027, the reference date for Census," it said. The Ministry reiterated that budgetary constraints have never been a hurdle for conducting the Census, as adequate funding is consistently ensured by the government. The MHA said, "Budget has never been a constraint for Census as fund is always ensured by the Govt. Home Minister Amit Shah has clarified on many occasions that in the delimitation exercise, concerns of southern states will be taken care of and discussed with all concerned at an appropriate time". The CM will hand over the first copy to the former President Ramnath Kovind and Telangana Governor Jishnu Dev Varma, according to Alai Balai Foundation Chairperson Bandaru Vijaya Laxmi. A galaxy of national-level personalities, including Union Minister and state BJP President G Kishan Reddy, Former Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. CJI Gavai champions cross-border legal synergy at ICA London conference
New Delhi / London, June 5 (UNI) Chief Justice of India Justice B R Gavai inaugurated the third International Conference on 'Arbitrating Indo-UK Commercial Disputes: Synergizing India–UK Arbitration Practices' in London on Thursday. The high-level event, hosted by the Indian Council of Arbitration (ICA) during London International Disputes Week, brought together legal luminaries, judges, policymakers, and commercial dispute resolution experts from both nations to strengthen ties in arbitration and mediation. Delivering the inaugural address, CJI Gavai remarked, 'India and the United Kingdom share a rich history, bound by the tradition of arbitration and mediation rooted in our common law heritage.' The conference was also addressed by Union Minister of Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal, Lord Michael Briggs, Judge of the UK Supreme Court, Justice Hima Kohli, Supreme Court of India, Vikram Doraiswami, High Commissioner of India to the UK, and eminent lawyers including Harish Salve KC and Geeta Luthra, Vice President of ICA. CJI Gavai reflected on India's arbitration journey, invoking Mahatma Gandhi's commitment to mediation as foundational. 'Disputes are inevitable. What defines a strong commercial relationship is our commitment to resolve them efficiently,' he stated. He emphasised India's progress through amendments to the Arbitration and Conciliation Act (notably 2019), the establishment of the Arbitration Council of India, and the 2024 Bill proposing emergency arbitration and appellate tribunals. He lauded the UK's 2025 reforms in its Arbitration Act, promoting summary disposal and legal clarity. Justice Gavai drew from key Indian rulings, including BALCO, Vijay Karia, Amazon versus Future Retail and Gayatri Balasamy, to emphasise judicial minimalism and finality in arbitration. He noted, 'When arbitral awards are upheld without unnecessary interference, it enhances predictability, business trust, and investor confidence.' The CJI praised the growth of Indian institutions like DIAC, MCIA, and IIAC, while commending LCIA's role as a global benchmark. He stressed the importance of collaboration between Indian and UK arbitration bodies to raise global standards. Justice Gavai applauded the adoption of Online Dispute Resolution (ODR) and hybrid systems such as Arb-Med-Arb. He called the Bar Council of India's recent move to allow foreign lawyers to advise on arbitration in India a 'landmark reform' that balances global openness with domestic integrity. CJI Gavai humorously outlined four transformative reforms he would introduce with a "magical wand". 'If I Had a Wand…,' CJI said, "I would make four reforms for India's Arbitration Regime." Finality of Arbitral Awards – Arbitration must be the final word, not an invitation for years of litigation. Mainstream Institutional Arbitration -- The Arbitration centres should be the norm, not an exception. Elimination of Delays -- Procedural fairness should not become a tool for tactical stalling. Diversity in Arbitrators -- The arbitrator pool must reflect varied perspectives and backgrounds for better outcomes. Chief Justice Gavai concluded by affirming India's unwavering commitment to becoming a preferred global seat for arbitration. He said, 'As India and the UK grow increasingly interconnected in commerce and law, our shared democratic values and legal traditions provide a strong foundation for a unified, efficient, and trustworthy dispute resolution system.' The conference echoed a resounding call for legal harmonisation, technology-driven arbitration, and cross-border cooperation with the shared goal of easing court pendency and bolstering investor confidence through strong alternative dispute resolution mechanisms.
