Desiree Ellis names the team for the Botswana and Zambia friendlies

Eyewitness News16-05-2025

JOHANNESBURG - Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis has announced the squad that will face Zambia and Botswana in international friendlies to be played this month.
'We are the highest-ranked team in the COSAFA region, but I don't think that means anything. I think being the WAFCON defending champions as well, I think that carries a bit of weight on your back with everybody wanting to play you and wanting to beat you and come up and put up the best performance,' said Desiree Ellis.
The South African senior women's national team will play against Botswana on Wednesday, 28 May 2025, and then Botswana and Zambia will face off against each other on Saturday, 31 May 2025. Then, Dr Ellis' charges will wrap up the Three-Nations series against Zambia on Tuesday, 3 June 2025.
'But we also know that it's a test not just for us but for them. We're all going to the WAFCON. Botswana got to the quarterfinals, and Zambia got to the semi-finals the last time. So the test is for us, but just so much as it is for them, and I think the physicality that both of them are going to bring is something we sometimes struggle with.'
The matches are part of the senior women's national team's preparations for the defence of their Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title as the countdown continues to the continental tournament to be hosted in Morocco from 5-26 July 2025.
'I think we've got to have more control, and this will help us to see where we are with that. Defensively, we've got to be sound and obviously at set-pieces we're going to be challenged with the area that they have. The speed of both teams' attack that they have, we've got to be able to then organise our defensive shape better because that is what's going to happen at WAFCON.'
Thembi Kgatlana has not been selected to this camp as she has club commitments that would have made it difficult for her to travel from North America and still be fresh enough for the two friendlies.
All three matches will be played at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville, and kick-off is at 15h00 for all of them.

Bulls, Sharks to serve another epic at Loftus

A BULLS v Sharks knockout/playoff clash will always be one for the ages and the United Rugby Championship semi-final between the two at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday at 6.15pm, is sure serve another epic storyline. Judging by the quarter-final scorelines, Bulls beat Edinburgh 42-33 while Sharks had to be clinical in the penalty shootout to go past Munster after a 24-24 extra time draw, there is no denying the home side a favourite's tag. The good news for South African rugby is that Mzansi already has a team in the final. Independent Newspapers rugbby writers Mike Greenaway and Leighton Koopman look at which side will win and why. WHY THE BULLS WILL WIN Leighton Koopman As South Africa's form side in the United Rugby Championship, boosted by home advantage and team that peaked at the right time of the year, the Bulls are in the inside lane to win the semi-final against the Sharks at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday evening. Their dominating scrum and physical forwards will give them the edge over the Sharks who had a thing of late to only arrive in the second half. While the competition at scrum time will be the perfect test of strength versus strength, it's the Bulls' overpowering scrum that will drive the visitors into submission. While there is an all-Bok front row for the Sharks too, tighthead Wilco Louw has been a destroyer up front and Nche will have a hard time keeping him in check. And on the other side, the young Jan-Hendrik Wessels will stand strong against veteran Vincent Koch. Then, the superiority of the Bulls in the lineout will outshine their opponents. Captain Ruan Nortjé will lick his lips at poaching balls but also securing them longside JF van Heerden and Cobus Wiese. The Sharks losing Eben Etzebeth and Jason Jenkins will be music to the ears of the Bulls' lineout. It is a risk bringing Johan Goosen back from injury and dropping him straight into the starting side, but he can pull the strings to set the backline running. Along with fullback Willie le Roux, they can open the gaps to set the likes of Canan Moodie and Sebastian de Klerk away. De Klerk and Moodie's prowess under the high kicks, and there will be plenty up and unders coming from Goosen and scrumhalf Embrose Papier. The Bulls' overall gameplan, they vary their tactics way better than the Sharks, should see them be too strong for their visitors, and they will progress to another final. WHY THE SHARKS WILL WIN Mike Greenaway The Sharks are a team tailor-made for high-pressure knockout games. John Plumtree has created a culture where the team loves to triumph over adversity. The Sharks have won their last six games without reaching anywhere near their potential. They are a dogged side that enjoys pulling the contest down into the trenches for unarmed combat. It won't worry them in the slightest that they are not scoring tries. Any way to the winner's podium will do, and if that means leaving the cork in the champagne rugby approach, so be it. The Bulls have been scoring an average of five tries per game at Loftus as their impressive backs cash in on the sparkling possession coming their way, but semi-finals and finals are different beasts. The pressure cranks up; defences get tighter; the aerial game is preferred to adventurous attack. All of this suits the Sharks and their street-fighter approach. They will drag the Bulls into an arm wrestle. This is the way the Sharks have been playing all season. In a sense, they have been playing finals rugby for most of the URC. There is also the significant fact that they have seven double World Cup-winning Springboks in their team, including four in their pack. Even without Etzebeth and Jenkins, this is a Sharks pack that can stand up to the Bulls. Leading them is Siya Kolisi. The Springbok captain's experience of making good decisions in the heat of battle will stand the Sharks in good stead, while his inspired move from flank to No 8 allows for Plumtree to pick a genuine fetcher in James Venter and an exceptional blindside flank in Vincent Tshituka, who was recently called up to the Springbok squad. It means the Sharks have an underrated loose trio to go with a solid tight five, so the Sharks' backs will get their fair share of decent possession. There is also the nagging suspicion that the Sharks' backline could click when it matters most. There are too many superstars in that back division for cohesion to evade them much longer.

Coach Hugo Broos is happy with Bafana Bafana newcomers despite Tanzania stalemate

Bafana Bafana's coach, Hugo Broos, expressed his satisfaction with his side's performance in Friday's international friendly against Tanzania, on a night marked by debut displays and new beginnings. The match ended in a goalless draw at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, Limpopo. Despite the lack of goals, Broos was encouraged by the contributions of fresh talent within the squad. Bafana Bafana fielded a reshuffled lineup, with eight newcomers donning the national team jersey. Broos acknowledged the challenges of assembling a side with limited experience playing together, aside from the few who share club commitments. 'There were eight new national team jerseys today, and what I want to say is we had a new team today, with players who have never played together before, except those who play for the same team,' said Broos. 'So, it was not easy. I said it before the game, the result is not important. For me, it was not important." The sentiment that performance precedes results is echoed throughout Broos' statements. There were opportunities for Bafana Bafana to clinch the win, yet the coach found solace in their overall performance and teamwork, noting: "Sure, we wanted to win the game, and we could have won the game because we had some chances to do so. But the performance was more important. "You don't have to underestimate the fact that if you bring 23 players together and select 11 to play a game, players who've never played together, that is not easy." Coaching counterpart Hemed Suleiman of Tanzania's Taifa Stars also felt the magnitude of the match, acknowledging Bafana Bafana's potential as they both prepare for upcoming tournaments. "As I said before, South Africa have a good team. I think they are trying to build their team for the future because I saw that they were missing some players," Suleiman noted. He acknowledged the challenge the South African squad presented and appreciated the players' efforts to adapt and mould their strategy even amid challenges. Bafana Bafana will continue to build upon this experience as they prepare for their encounter against Mozambique at the same venue on Tuesday night. With the prospect of refining team dynamics and fostering player chemistry, the current squad would improve with more experience. Broos is likely to add more fresh faces to the squad to face Mozambique, and possibly the changes will help secure a victory.

Why in-demand Fawaaz Basadien should steer clear of Kaizer Chiefs

Basadien's possible future move Stellenbosch FC defender and stand-in Bafana Bafana captain Fawaaz Basadien is in demand after an impressive season for his club. Photo: Alche Greeff/BackpagePix Image: Alche Greeff/BackpagePix Fawaaz Basadien is the man of the moment in South African football currently. The left back, arguably the best in the country, was named Stellenbosch FC's Player of the Season recently after some impressive form for the Cape Winelands side. The cherry on top for Basadien was the 27-year-old being named as the stand-in skipper for Bafana Bafana, as Ronwen Williams is away at the FIFA Club World Cup. It's been a good year for the former Moroka Swallows man. Naturally, the monied clubs in Gauteng have been lining up and are interested in his services. According to reports, Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs, and Orlando Pirates all want to sign him. Not many local footballers get a chance to pick between one of the big three. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ Ad Loading Addressing those rumours ahead of Bafana's game against Tanzania on Friday, the defender said: 'Obviously, all the rumours and stuff are nice to have as a player. But my main focus is to use whatever opportunity I get to play and keep doing what I do and keep improving every day. 'So, whatever happens in the background is just part of the rumours that have been created. But for me, in football, there comes a time where you want to achieve greater things – maybe play for the so-called big teams or make big moves.' So, with that being said, where should he go next? For many, the logical answer would be Mamelodi Sundowns. At Chloorkop, Basadien would land in a very stable situation, where every player knows what is expected of them and clear goals are set. While Sundowns supporters are passionate about their club, they're not as vocal and opinionated as those from other clubs. If he struggles to settle in, they would be patient enough to give him time to get used to his new surroundings. The same can't be said about fans of the Soweto clubs. While Pirates are more settled as a football operation, Chiefs are not. The club have just finished outside of the top half for a second successive season and are in desperate need of open-heart surgery. Kaizer Chiefs would be completely the wrong move for a player who is starting to make a name for himself on the international stage. And we all know how quickly Chiefs supporters can turn on players who don't hit the ground running. Basadien must think carefully now. He's not a youngster anymore, and this next move could define the rest of his career. A switch to Sundowns makes sense if he wants silverware and structure, but he'll have to fight for his place every week. Pirates might offer him that balance – game time and prestige – while Chiefs, honestly, look like a gamble right now. Whatever he chooses, the ball's at his feet. And in South African football, that's a rare kind of power.
