Top Pakistani general flags ‘Kashmir' in Singapore, warns of ‘destructive escalation'

ISLAMABAD: Kashmir remains the 'core' of India-Pakistan animosity and not addressing it through dialogue or third-party mediation carries the risk of 'destructive escalation', Islamabad's designated military representative to the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore said Sunday in another attempt to internationalise an issue that Delhi insists is bilateral.
Gen Sahir Shamshad Mirza, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, sought to spotlight Kashmir as a 'dispute' that warranted international intervention during a session on 'regional crisis management mechanisms'.
Pushing for 'conflict resolution aligned with Security Council resolutions', Gen Mirza reeled off a list of countries that he claimed could be third-party mediators, the US, UK, Saudi Arabia, China, Turkiye and UAE.
The military officer said meeting the 'aspirations of the Kashmiri people' was essential for sustainable peace. He accused India of having an 'extremist mindset' and warned that it could be 'too late to avert damage and destruction' if this continued.
Gen Mirza said the threshold for conventional warfare had 'significantly degraded', suggesting the possibility of rapid escalation in a nuclear-armed region.
India has consistently dismissed Pakistan's call for UN-mediated solutions, while asking Islamabad to stop sponsoring terrorism in the region.

Man arrested in Punjab on charges of spying for Pakistan during Operation Sindoor
The Punjab Police on Tuesday arrested a man from Tarn Taran district for allegedly spying for Pakistan's intelligence agency and leaking sensitive information about Operation Sindoor. Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav claimed that the man, identified as Gagandeep Singh, posed 'a threat to national security' after allegedly sharing sensitive details about troop deployments and military locations in lieu of money during India's military strikes on Pakistan. Yadav also alleged that Singh had been in contact with Pakistan-based Khalistani supporter Gopal Singh Chawla for the past five years and was introduced to Pakistani intelligence operatives through him. The police recovered a mobile phone containing information that Singh had shared with the Pakistani operatives, along with the contact details of 20 persons linked to Islamabad's intelligence agency, Inter-Services Intelligence, said the director general of police. 'Thorough financial and technical investigations are underway to trace other linkages and establish the full scope of this espionage network,' Yadav said on X, while adding that a first information report had been registered under the Official Secrets Act. Further investigation was underway, Yadav added. The strikes were in response to the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam, which killed 26 persons on April 22. Over the past few weeks, at least 15 persons have been arrested across the country on allegations of spying for Pakistan and leaking sensitive information about Operation Sindoor. On Saturday, the National Investigation Agency also conducted raids at 15 locations in eight states that were suspected to be linked to Pakistani intelligence operatives.

Punjab: Police arrest Tarn Taran man for sharing sensitive information with Pakistan's ISI
Tarn Taran (Punjab) [India], June 3 (ANI): The Punjab Police, based on information received from Counter-Intelligence-Punjab, has arrested a man identified as Gagandeep Singh alias Gagan, a resident of Mohalla Rodupur, Gali Nazar Singh Wali, Tarn Taran, for allegedly sharing sensitive information with Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and Pakistan-based Khalistani supporter Gopal Singh Chawla. In a post on X, DGP Punjab Police shared information stating that the arrested accused had been in touch with the ISI and Gopal Singh Chawla, sharing classified details concerning army movements during Operation Sindhoor. Investigations have revealed that he was engaged in sharing troop deployments and strategic locations, posing a threat to national security. Preliminary investigations indicate that Gagandeep Singh had been in contact with Gopal Singh Chawla for the past five years, through whom he was introduced to Pakistani Intelligence Operatives (PIOs). He also received payments from PIOs via Indian channels. During the investigation, a mobile phone containing intelligence shared with the PIOs, as well as details of over 20 ISI contacts, was recovered. An FIR has been registered under the Official Secrets Act at PS City, Tarn Taran, and further investigation is in progress. On May 7, India launched Operation Sindoor as a decisive military response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack by Pakistan-sponsored terrorists in which 26 people were killed. Indian Armed Forces targeted terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, leading to the death of over 100 terrorists affiliated with terror outfits like the Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Hizbul Mujahideen. After India's strike on terror infrastructure, Pakistan responded with cross-border shelling across the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir and the International Border, as well as attempted drone attacks targeting civilian areas along the border regions. In response, India neutralised Pakistani air defence apparatus, radar infrastructure, and communication centres, and inflicted heavy damage across 11 airbases in Pakistan. After this, on May 10, an understanding on the cessation of hostilities between India and Pakistan was announced. (ANI)

New Delhi [India], June 3 (ANI): Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and MP Sanjay Raut on Tuesday supported the call for a special session of Parliament during the INDIA alliance meeting, saying that his party had already signed the draft proposal prepared for the special session demand. Speaking to ANI, Raut said, 'I was told that we are meeting today in the Constitution Club regarding a draft on the Special Session of the Parliament. Our party has already signed the draft. If the Opposition parties demand that a special session should be held, then it should be done...' The meeting will be held today at the Constitution Club in New Delhi. The meeting of opposition leaders under the INDIA alliance aimed to build consensus on demanding a special parliamentary session on major national issues. Meanwhile, reacting to Congress leader Salman Khurshid's controversial remark regarding Article 370, he said, 'You go abroad as a representative of the country, not of any party. No one can set the standard of patriotism on opposing or supporting Article 370...' Earlier on Friday, BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla also responded to Congress leader Salman Khurshid's comments on Article 370, acknowledging that the former External Affairs Minister had admitted the provision was a blunder. Poonawalla highlighted the positive changes in Jammu and Kashmir since the abrogation of Article 370, citing increased prosperity and people's voices being heard. Speaking to ANI, Poonawala said, 'Salman Khurshid is a senior Congress leader and has been External Affairs Minister previously and today he also accepts how 'Pakistan-Parasti, Pattharbazi and Problem of Pakistan' was increasing. Now that Article 370 has been removed, there is Prosperity and People's voice is audible... Article 370 was a blunder of the then governments and especially Nehru, this is accepted by Salman Khurshid himself... But even today, some Congress leaders back the Article 370...' Khurshid had earlier defended Congress's stand on Article 370. He said that Article 370 had created a feeling that Jammu and Kashmir was separate from the rest of India. While addressing Indonesian think tanks and academics in Jakarta, Indonesia, Khurshid stated, 'Kashmir had a major problem for a long time. Much of that was reflected in the thinking of the government in an article called 370 of the Constitution... But Article 370 was abrogated and it was finally put to an end.' Also, earlier today, all-party delegation member Salman Khurshid, said that Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir must be given back to India. Khurshid, in conversation with ANI, said that India has clearly stated that talks, including talks on the Indus Water Treaty, can happen only when Pakistan's commitment to peace is clear. 'There is a long standing unanimous resolution of parliament of India saying that the Pakistan occupied Kashmir must be re-vacated and given back to India and as you know that even in the assembly of Jammu andKashmir, the seats that should have been in that area are kept vacant just for this reason that we have we have a long term commitment that the area is to come back to us. That's one important factor,' he said. Khurshid further said that Pakistan negated attempts at making peace, as it continued to attack India over the years. 'The second is that the government has reiterated this because, you know, often questions are asked about whether you will talk or not, etc. We have expressed our distress that repeated attempts to speak and negotiate have been betrayed by Pakistan by a subsequent attack and several attacks that happened over the years,' he said. Khurshid is part of an all-party delegation led by JD-U MP Sanjay Kumar Jha. The delegation includes Aparajita Sarangi (BJP), TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee, Brij Lala (BJP), John Brittas (CPI-M), Pradan Baruah (BJP), Hemang Joshi (BJP), Salman Khurshid, and Mohan Kumar. The delegation is visiting many countries as part of India's global outreach against Pakistan-sponsored terrorism. The delegation has visited Japan, South Korea, and Singapore so far. (ANI)
