HRW accuses Qatar of discriminating against Baha'i minority
BEIRUT: Human Rights Watch on Sunday accused Qatar of discriminating against the Baha'i religious minority, citing arbitrary detentions and warning of a threat to the community's survival in the Gulf state.
"The Baha'i community of Qatar has endured decades of government discrimination and intimidation, and authorities have consistently ignored community leaders' repeated efforts to engage the government in dialogue and seek redress," said Michael Page, HRW's deputy Middle East director.
"This state-sponsored discrimination poses a threat to the very existence of the Baha'i community of Qatar," he said in a statement.
The Baha'i faith, whose global headquarters is in Israel, claims more than seven million followers worldwide.
It is based on the teachings of Bahaullah, who was born in Iran in 1817 and is considered the prophet and founder of their monotheistic faith.
Between 2003 and 2025, Qatar "deported as many as 14 members of the group for no apparent reason other than individuals belonging to the Baha'i faith", HRW said.
It cited the case of an Iranian Baha'i born in Qatar who was forced to leave in March 2025 under threat of expulsion for "disrupting public order", without a written explanation.

The New York-based rights group also mentioned Remy Rowhani, arrested and detained on April 28 over posts from an X account linked to the Baha'i community, under Qatar's cybercrime law.
Rowhani, chair of the National Spiritual Assembly of the Baha'is of Qatar, had already been released in January 2025 after serving a one-month prison sentence, HRW added.
The group said Baha'is had also faced job rejections and denial of official documents.

Gurgaon: In three years, 102 claims have been filed by families or victims of hit-and-run accidents, of which compensation has been disbursed for only two of them. Two cases are in the final stages of processing, and the remaining – 98 – are still being investigated by police. This slow pace of resolution has left families of accident victims in the lurch, with some waiting for years after they applied for aid under the 2022 Hit-and-Run Motor Accident Compensation scheme. It offers Rs 2 lakh as compensation in cases of fatalities, and Rs 50,000 for serious injuries. The scheme is only applicable for hit-and-run accidents, in which police have not been able to identify the errant driver or vehicle. Sunita, a city resident whose husband died in a hit-and-run accident on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway this year, told TOI she has been waiting for compensation for months. Her husband was the only earning member of the family. "My husband was returning home after work on a cycle when he was hit by an unknown vehicle. The tribunal, after hearing both sides, determines the amount of compensation that may be paid to accident victims or their families. In many cases, the company that insured the errant driver's vehicle is asked to provide compensation.

Two trailers collide on highway, truck driver dies
Kanpur: A truck driver died, and his attendant was critically injured after an iron girder from another truck penetrated the driver's chest on the Kanpur-Fatehpur-Prayagraj highway in the Maharajpur area on Wednesday. The incident took place in front of the Maharajpur police station when two trailers carrying iron girders collided. The impact caused the girders from the front trailer to breach the rear vehicle's cabin, fatally wounding the driver. Police and locals spent approximately two hours using a backhoe loader and crane to recover the driver's body. The seriously injured helper was sent to hospital in critical condition. The collision resulted in a two-kilometre traffic jam on the Kanpur-Fatehpur-Prayagraj lane, lasting over an hour. Vehicles formed lengthy queues, leaving travellers uncomfortable in the intense heat. Traffic flow resumed after the damaged vehicles were shifted to the roadside. UP's birth and death registrations go up: Census data
1 2 3 Lucknow: A critical policy reform undertaken by the UP govt improved the state's performance in terms of birth and death registrations. The outcome is visible in the recently released Vital Statistics of India based on the Civil Registration System-2022 report. A look at the numbers shows that birth registration increased from 48 lakh in 2020 to 54 lakh in 2022, while death registrations rose from 8.7 lakh in 2020 to 12.23 lakh in 2022. Also, 61.8% of the births were registered within 21 days in 2022, up from 50% in 2020. Also, 68% of the deaths were registered on time in 2022 compared to 50% in 2020. In 2021, the state's health and family welfare department came up with an order to designate all govt hospitals (even at the level of sub-centres) as registrars, with an explicit requirement to issue birth certificates before the mother's discharge, which powered this turnaround. Complementing this, private hospitals are designated as informants, responsible for seamlessly transmitting information about each birth or death to local area registrars. This institutional shift — from individuals to the state — enabled suo motu registrations at the point of occurrence, improving both coverage and timeliness. Going forward, replicating this model for death registration and cause-of-death data, especially in institutional settings, will be key," she said. Notwithstanding the achievements, a look at UP's position on the whole suggests that there is room for improvement, as UP is still far from the top-performing states and Union Territories where more than 80% registration of births to the total births and deaths to total deaths registered within the prescribed time period has been recorded.
