Tragic 14-year-old found dead in burning building as police arrest 14 children
A family wants to give a 14 year old boy "the best send off" after his death in what's been described as "one of the most tragic ways", while police continue their search for clues over the heartbreaking incident.
The remains of Layton Carr, 14, who went missing, were found in a torched building close to Fairfield Industrial Park in the Bill Quay area of Gateshead, Tyne and Wear. Northumbria Police have taken into custody 14 children aged between 11 and 14 on suspicions of manslaughter following the young boy's death.
Firefighters raced against the clock to deal with the inferno on Friday evening amid concerns for the teen believed to be in the vicinity at that time. The emergency crews got to the fiery scene shortly before 8pm and subdued the flames.
After Layton's disappearance around 7pm the preceding evening, police appealed to the public for his whereabouts in the early hours of Saturday. However, the police later confirmed the grim discovery of his body in the aftermath of the blaze.
Stephanie Simpson, who is a mate of Layton's mum Georgia Dingwall, has launched a GoFundMe campaign, sharing their desire to grant the tragic teen "the best send off", reports the Mirror.
She penned: "As everyone is aware My best friend Georgia Dingwall has lost her 14 year old Son Layton Carr in one of the most tragic ways you could e(v)er imagine. I'm making this go fund me to help her give him the best send off and help take some stress off Georgia right now. The last thing Georgia needs to worry trying to pay for a funeral for her Boy while going through this. Any donations will help thank you."
Locals near the dilapidated and heavily defaced Fairfield Industrial Estate in Bill Quay, Gateshead, which lies near the River Tyne, pointed fingers at inadequate security for the heartbreaking incident. The site, once home to Marconi's Radar Plant, has transformed into a 15-acre industrial estate, with residents claiming much of it is abandoned.
Despite being encircled by a 10-foot-high wall covered in graffiti, parts of the barrier have been compromised in several spots, even though community members have tried to seal the breaches with corrugated iron. However, these makeshift repairs are frequently torn apart by vandals.
Neighbours reported that kids could enter the premises through gaps in the iron sheeting and exit by wriggling under the main gate. Today, the gates were shut and taped off as part of a crime scene investigation, adjacent to the demolished security office, now devoid of all its glass doors and windows.
A local resident remarked: "It has never been right since Marconi closed. The kids have been getting in for God knows how long. There is not a building in there that has any copper wire left in it.
"They have damaged loads of cars by throwing things over the wall. Kids get in and run riot. I caught eight of them on Thursday. Four were on this side of the fence. Another four were trying to get under gates to get out. They were scraping their knees because they had shorts on trying to get under the gate. It has been like that for years. There is a security camera but no one goes in and checks it. Someone comes in a van and takes a picture of the entrance and goes off again.
"Marconi closed a few years after we moved in 43 years ago and it was rented out to different businesses. What happened is terrible. It is a shame someone has had to lose their lives for it to get all this attention. Hopefully, some good will come of it."
Flowers and other tributes have been left at the scene Including one that read: "Rest in Paradise Layton. Always in our hearts. Fly high with the angels. Took too soon. Love you forever. Lots of love."
Another handwritten note left alongside flowers and toys read: "Thank you for brightening up our lives. You will be missed beyond words. All my love."
And another card stated: "Thank you for brightening up our lives. The Close will never be the same without you. We will all miss you."
Officers have arrested 11 boys and three girls, aged between 11 and 14, on suspicion of manslaughter.
Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner Susan Dungworth has sent her "heartfelt condolences" to the family and mates of the young teen during this "devastating time". She said: "I'm being kept updated regularly by the Chief Constable and her team and would like to thank all emergency services involved in the response and ongoing inquiries."

Thousands have been raised after a Filipino mechanic's home was targeted in the Ballymena riots. Kevin Rous, a mechanic at the nearby Wrightbus Factory, had his car destroyed and Cullybackey home damaged in an arson attack during violent disorder in Ballymena on Monday night. He had been working at the time of the attack in the family, with his family being left terrified during the ordeal. On Tuesday evening during further disorder in Ballymena, some Filipino residents posted their country's flag on their doors in the hopes of not being targeted by racist attacks. Following the attack on Kevin's home, a fundraiser has been set up by Zuzanna Dziwulska in the hopes of supporting the mechanic and helping him to get back on his feet. A post on GoFundMe read: 'We all know about the incidents which have been ongoing in Ballymena. This fundraiser has no political intent. 'I hope as residents of Ballymena/Cullybackey we can agree innocent people should not be punished by the actions of others. 'Therefore I am hoping to fundraise a small amount of money and get in contact with Kevin Rous in Cullybackey who has had his family unfortunately hit by an attack. 'Everyone should feel safe in Ballymena and hopefully we can help get this man's life back on track. '24 hours in we have gone way over target, I have managed to get in contact with Kev and his family and am now going through the process of getting money to them. 'I have also been reached by the wider Filipino community so it would be great if we could also give others affected a helping hand'. Tonight it was reported that police working on the Madeleine McCann case found two guns buried underground during last week's searches in Portugal. Clothing and animal bones were also found. The items will now be sent back to Germany where they will undergo forensic analysis. It follows fresh claims about prime suspect Christian Brueckner, with a new documentary claiming images of children's swimming costumes, guns, a mask and toddler's toys were found at a property linked to the convicted paedophile. Last year, Brueckner was acquitted of carrying out five other sexual offences in Portugal between 2000 and 2017 after a judge in Braunschweig said there was not enough evidence to convict him. No, no, no.' The UK has spent several million pounds in its efforts to find out any information about Madeleine McCann. Funding given to Operation Grange has reached more than £13.2million since 2011. As of 2022, there were five Metropolitan police officers who were working on the case. The residents of Praia da Luz have said they hope the family of Madeleine McCann will "get closure." Long-term residents in the resort town said they hoped the search would bring the family much-needed closure. Speaking to the BBC, residents said: "We hope her family get closure." A former homicide police chief has shared why this missing person case captured the public in particular. Simon Foy, who led Operation Grange to find Madeleine in 2011, explained that the case had captured the world because it was 'every parent's nightmare'. He told The Guardian: 'When I was working in homicide investigations in the Met, occasionally these cases would come along which for some reason just connected around the public consciousness. 'It's a whole load of things: it's a young blond girl, it's a middle-class family, it's a holiday, it's every parent's nightmare. All that sort of stuff very unpredictably would combine together and you would go from virtually minimal media interest and coverage to significant and substantial media coverage, and that was all before the days of social media.' How did it happen? When did it happen? Where did it happen, you know?' 'That's why these situations are so frustrating … because there's way more questions than answers. The only thing that anybody knows for sure is that there's a little girl who used to be walking the streets; now she's not.' He believes that the renewed search clearly suggests that officials are still searching for answers in an unsolved case. Investigators are looking into claims a British man and his German wife were somehow involved in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann after the sister of the Brit tipped off detectives. The woman claimed in 2018 that the couple had been drinking close to where Madeleine went missing. They reportedly had been in a car that hit Madeleine while under the influence of alcohol. A note written by Christian Brueckner asked six questions. According to a note translated by The Sun, Brueckner wrote: "It is the important questions, the decisive questions that can never be answered." These are the six questions he raised: Portuguese police reportedly did not know what intelligence German police were working with when they launched the latest search. German officials packed up a few soil samples from the site during the search, although they have not commented on the significance of anything that was found. German police had been searching for any links that tied Christian Brueckner to the location where he had been at the time of Madeleine's disappearance in 2007. Madeleine McCann vanished on May 3 while she was on holiday with her family at the Ocean Club in Praia da Luz. Her parents went out for dinner with some friends while she and her brother and sister stayed at the holiday flat about 100 yards away. The adults had a rota system and, when it was Kate McCann's turn to check on the children, she found Madeleine was missing. Police were then alerted and guests at the complex started to search for Madeleine.

Following a fresh search from investigators of a vast area in Lagos, Portugal, it has been hinted that fragments of clothing and bones may have been found, and are set for analysis this week.
