African Union Commission Welcomes the Election of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Liberia to the United Nations Security Council
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, His Excellency Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, warmly congratulates the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Republic of Liberia on their successful election as non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council for the 2026–2027 term; joining the Federal Republic of Somalia in representing the African Group during this pivotal period.
The Chairperson commended the democratic processes that led to the election of these two Member States, underscoring the international community's confidence in their ability to contribute meaningfully to the maintenance of global peace and security. He noted that their election comes at a time when Africa's voice and leadership are more vital than ever in shaping effective responses to complex international peace and security challenges.
Mr. Youssouf further highlighted that, as members of the 'A3' on the Security Council, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Liberia, and Somalia bear the collective responsibility of advancing the African Union's positions on key peace and security issues.
The Chairperson expressed the Commission's confidence in their principled and coordinated leadership in defending African interests, promoting multilateralism, and ensuring that Africa's priorities are heard and respected at the highest levels of global decision-making.

President of the Republic of Slovenia Visits African Union Headquarters, Strengthens Ties on Multilateralism and Security Council Reforms
Her Excellency Nataša Pirc Musar, President of the Republic of Slovenia, today paid a courtesy visit to the the African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. She was received by Her Excellency Ambassador Selma Malika Haddadi, Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC). The Deputy Chairperson warmly welcomed President Pirc Musar. Their discussions focused on strengthening Africa-Europe cooperation, United Nations Security Council (UNSC) reforms, and shared priorities in new technologies, Artificial Intellegence (AI), and security governance. Key Highlights of the Meeting: 1. African Representation at the UN Security Council The Deputy Chairperson congratulated the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the Republic of Liberia on their election as non-permanent members of the UNSC for the 2026–2027 term. She reiterated the legitimate call by African Union member states for a fair representation of Africa on the Security Council, as articulated in the Ezulwini Consensus. 2. Agenda 2063 and multilateralism H.E. Amb. Eritrea: World Environment Day Observed at National Level
World Environment Day, 5 June, was observed at the national level at the Central Region Administration Hall under the theme 'Ending Plastic Pollution.' The occasion was attended by senior Government and PFDJ officials, as well as representatives of UN offices in Eritrea and other invited guests. Speaking at the event, Mr. Tesfay Gebreselasie, Minister of Land, Water and Environment, stated that plastic pollution has reached uncontrollable levels globally, and emphasized that addressing the issue requires collective action. Minister Tesfay noted that unattended waste—especially plastic—has severe health consequences. He called for proper waste management, support for enterprises engaged in waste processing, and the implementation of long-term practical measures to improve waste management. Mr. Fesehaye Haile, Governor of the Central Region, stated that raising public awareness alone is not sufficient and emphasized the need for an integrated effort to ensure a safe environment.
