
Not Only Premium, IRCTC To Soon Offer E-Pantry Option On Mail, Express Trains

Passengers on long train journeys often face overcharging and unhygienic meals, but that may soon be a thing of the past. Those travelling on mail and express trains will be able to book a meal at the time of buying the ticket – the same as premium trains.
The e-Pantry service by the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) is being piloted on Vivek Express (22503/04) – India's longest distance covering train. Based on its success, the service will be extended to more trains across the railways network, said an official statement.
The service allows passengers on mail and express trains to digitally pre-book standardised meals without hassle, helping address long-standing complaints about overcharging and unauthorised vendors.
'To address these challenges, IRCTC, in consultation with the railways, has launched the e-Pantry service – an innovative, digitally enabled solution for pre-booked meal supply on mail, express trains running with pantry cars," said a statement from the IRCTC on Sunday.
The Indian Railways already offers a well-established system for opting for meals on premium trains that can be selected during booking tickets online. There was, however, a demand for a similar system for mail and express trains.
According to sources, in the initial phase of launch, the service could cover about 20 to 25 trains in the next couple of months.
The service ensures that passengers enjoy a more organised, safe, and digital catering experience, bringing 'peace of mind, hygienic meals, and a better overall travel experience", the statement said.
For booking on the service, passengers can select the e-Pantry meal option during the ticketing process on the IRCTC website (www.irctc.co.in), either from the confirmation page or the 'Booked Ticket History' section.
After booking, passengers receive a confirmation message and a meal verification code (MVC) via SMS or email. On the day of travel, passengers share the MVC with the vendor, who will then directly deliver the pre-ordered meal to their seat.
Listing the benefits of the scheme, the IRCTC said it offers online and digital payment options, eliminating the need for cash transactions during travel. Also, meal prices are fixed and clearly displayed at the time of booking, preventing overcharging by vendors.
The option will also control unauthorised vending as only IRCTC-authorised licensees are permitted to deliver pre-booked meals, ensuring quality-assured meals and safety onboard.
Additionally, all meal orders are managed through digital dashboards, ensuring greater transparency, accountability, and compliance with tax regulations. If a meal is not delivered as booked, passengers are entitled to a refund. Cancellation and refund details will be communicated through email, SMS, or WhatsApp.

The fare on this train will be Rs 660 for a chair car seat and Rs 1,270 for executive class. The price difference compared to the first Vande Bharat train is due to a difference in catering charges. From Srinagar, train 26404 will depart at 8 am and arrive in Katra at 10.58 am, with a two-minute stop at Banihal at 9 am. Fares will be Rs 715 for chair car and Rs 1,320 for executive class. Maha Kumbh sparked ₹500 cr tax surge in UP, spurred economic growth: Report
The 45-day Maha Kumbh held in Prayagraj has proven to be more than just a massive religious gathering — it has become a significant economic event for Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous state. Attracting about 66 crore pilgrims, the mela is said to have generated substantial revenue for the state government, driven largely by a sharp increase in tax collections and fuel sales, a MoneyControl report said on Saturday. Official figures, accessed by the news portal, reveal that the Maha Kumbh contributed around ₹500 crore in additional Goods and Services Tax (GST) and Value Added Tax (VAT) to the state exchequer. A senior official from the tax department is quoted as saying, "The Maha Kumbh has contributed around ₹500 crore in additional GST/VAT to the state exchequer, clearly reflecting the scale and reach of this religious and cultural phenomenon." In the first two months of 2025 alone — January and February — tax collections from sectors directly tied to the event totalled ₹239.47 crore. Prayagraj was the highest contributor, generating ₹146.4 crore, while other religious centres like Varanasi, Ayodhya, and Noida also saw increased collections. Sector-wise contributions Sectorally, Indian Railways led the way with ₹124.6 crore in tax contributions. Tent houses and advertising together generated ₹9.38 crore, while the hotel industry added ₹7.12 crore. An increase in air travel across the state resulted in ₹68.37 crore in taxes. In Prayagraj itself, ₹2.15 crore was collected through tax deducted at source (TDS), with another ₹9.3 crore pending clearance. Fuel sales reflect increased mobility Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) data for January and February 2025 shows a notable jump in fuel consumption. Petrol sales in Prayagraj surged by 81.95% in February alone — rising from 6,058 kilolitres last year to 11,022.5 kilolitres. January saw a rise from 5,253 kilolitres to 7,157 kilolitres. One kilolitre is equal to 1,000 litres. Diesel consumption also grew. January sales increased from 10,204 to 12,428 kilolitres, while February sales climbed to 13,777.5 kilolitres from 11,061 kilolitres. This reflects an overall fuel volume increase of over 11,800 kilolitres across both months. The economic ripple effect touched smaller businesses too. As many pilgrims travelled in private vehicles, the demand at roadside eateries, small hotels, and fuel stations surged — especially in and around Prayagraj, Varanasi, and Ayodhya, as well as along key highways. While much of this informal activity goes unrecorded in tax data, it contributed significantly to the local economy. Return on government spending The Uttar Pradesh government allocated around ₹7,500 crore towards the Maha Kumbh. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath defended the expenditure, stating, 'If an investment of ₹7,500 crore by the Central and state governments can generate economic activity worth ₹3 to ₹3.5 trillion, isn't it a wise investment?' An estimate by the Confederation of All India Traders supported this, suggesting that if every pilgrim spent ₹5,000 during their visit, the overall economic value of the mela would reach ₹2 trillion.

Not a seat left vacant as J&K's all-new Vande Bharat makes first journey from Katra to Srinagar
Two passenger trains will run daily from Katra to Srinagar—one at 8:10 am and another at 2:55 pm. The trains were launched on the eve of Eid-ul-Adha. In fact, according to the IRCTC website, the pairs of trains for Saturday and Sunday were fully booked within hours of Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurating them 6 June. Katra/Jammu: When the Vande Bharat Express left the Katra railway station at 8:10 am Saturday on its first commercial journey to Srinagar, it was 100 percent booked. The return journey is also fully booked, as are the train's journeys on Sunday. The 272-km Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) will provide all-weather connectivity. The historic line connects Kashmir not just to Jammu but to the rest of India via a railway line for the first time. On Friday, PM Modi flagged off two train services: one from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi (SMVD) Railway Station in Katra to Srinagar, and the other from Srinagar to Katra. Alongside, the prime minister also inaugurated the world's highest railway arch bridge over the Chenab as well as the country's first cable-stayed bridge of the Indian Railways over Anji Khad. Within Jammu and Kashmir, trains have so far been operational between Banihal and Baramulla in the Kashmir Valley, and between Jammu, Udhampur, and Katra in the Jammu region. But for the first, a direct train link from Jammu's Katra to Srinagar has opened. The launch of this rail link comes just weeks after the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor. Kashmir has seen a dip in tourism since the 22 April attack, and the new train service is being seen as a move toward restoring normalcy in the Valley. In his address, PM Modi said the attack on tourists in Pahalgam was an attempt to 'engineer communal clashes across the country and deprive the people of Kashmir of their livelihood.' To reach the station, the train passed through two key engineering landmarks: the Anji Khad cable-stayed bridge and the towering Chenab rail bridge—the tallest railway bridge in the world. In its journey to Sangalda, the train goes through breathtaking lush green hills, stretches of pine forest, and a series of tunnels—almost one every half a kilometre—cut through rugged terrain. According to Northern Railway spokesperson Dilip Kumar, the train has been designed using advanced technology to operate in J&K's tough topographic and climatic conditions. 'The train has been equipped with such technology that it will warm up to provide comfort to the passengers during intense winters the region witnesses,' Kumar told ThePrint. The most challenging part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail link project was constructing the Chenab rail bridge—made of steel and concrete. It was a difficult task as the region falls in a high-risk seismic zone and witnesses frequent spells of gusty winds. After several trial runs, the train was finally launched on 6 June. According to the railway officials, the Chenab bridge can withstand wind speeds up to 260 km/h. It has a projected lifespan of 120 years. 'This is not any general railway line but an engineering marvel. It's the feather in the cap of Indian Railways and a proud moment for the engineers and everyone involved in building this bridge,' Kumar said.
