International relief effort underway, China aid team lands
BANGKOK, March 29 (Reuters) - International aid began to arrive in Myanmar on Saturday as rescuers searched for survivors after a powerful earthquake devastated the Southeast Asian nation amid concerns the number killed would soar.
The death toll in Myanmar jumped to 694 with 1,670 injured, the military government said, up sharply from the 144 dead that state media reported on Friday.

"Infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and buildings were affected, leading to casualties and injuries among civilians. Search and rescue operations are currently being carried out in the affected areas," the junta said in a statement issued on state media.
The junta leader, General Min Aung Hlaing, had warned on Friday of more deaths and injuries as he invited "any country" to provide help and donations.
A Chinese rescue team arrived on Saturday while Russia and the U.S. offered aid in the disaster, which struck at lunchtime on Friday and damaged hundreds of buildings in neighbouring Thailand.
The United States Geological Service's predictive modelling estimated the death toll could exceed 10,000 people in Myanmar, and that losses could be greater than the value of the country's gross domestic product. Susan Hough, a scientist in the USGS's Earthquake Hazards Program, told Reuters it was difficult to predict an earthquake's death toll, for various reasons including timing. When an earthquake strikes during the daytime, as it did in Myanmar, "people are awake, they have their wits about them, they are better able to respond," she said.
SEARCHING FOR WORKERS IN TOWER RUBBLE
Much of the devastation was in Myanmar's second-largest city, Mandalay, close to the epicentre of the quake.
In the Thai capital Bangkok, 1,000 km (620 miles) from the epicentre a rescue mission was stepped up on Saturday to find construction workers trapped under the rubble of a collapsed 33-storey tower.
A 37-strong team from China landed in Yangon, Myanmar's former capital, early on Saturday, carrying medicine and equipment to detect signs of life with them, the Chinese embassy said in a Facebook post.
Russia said it was sending 120 experienced rescuers as well as doctors and search dogs, state news agency TASS reported.
U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday he had spoken with officials in Myanmar and that his administration would be providing some form of assistance.
Hough, who worked in Myanmar on the local seismology network, said the country's mix of modern structures and traditional buildings would also play a role. Traditional buildings "are going to be less potentially deadly than concrete," she said.
Thai authorities said nine people had died and 101 were missing in Bangkok, mostly labourers trapped in the rubble of the collapsed tower.
"We will do everything, we will not give up on saving lives, we will use all resources," Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt said at the site on Saturday, as excavators moved debris and drones scoured the rubble searching for survivors.
The Thai capital ground to a halt on Friday and Chadchart said hundreds of people had spent the night in city parks, but he said the situation was improving.

British couple try Chinese takeaway in America and spot one big difference

Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info A British couple, James and Siana, recently tried Chinese takeaway in America for the first time and noticed a significant difference. In the UK, ordering 'a Chinese' is a beloved tradition, with favourites such as egg fried rice, chow mein, and sweet and sour chicken. Chinese takeaways are dotted all over the UK and are a popular choice for relaxed get-togethers with family or friends. For some families, getting a Chinese takeaway for dinner is a treat, while for others it's a convenient option when they don't feel like cooking. Americans also enjoy Chinese takeaways, and this British couple decided to document their experience of trying one in the US on TikTok. James mentioned that a Chinese takeaway "is normally very good in Britain", so they were "intrigued" to see how it compares in the US. Siana started by opening a "stunning" container of broccoli beef, noting that it "actually smells really good," reports the Mirror. Next up was orange chicken. James confessed that he had never tried this dish before in the UK, and Siana admitted she hadn't heard of it either but knew it's a "big thing" in the US. Upon opening the container, James took a whiff of the chicken and exclaimed: "Oh it smells amazing." Siana excitedly chimed in: "Ooh yum, that smells like sweet and sour chicken." They also ordered some chicken fried rice. The next dish left them puzzled. They explained that the item was labelled as egg rolls, but the couple thought they looked more like spring rolls. In their exploration of different Chinese takeaway options between the US and the UK, Siana questioned whether 'egg rolls' were simply a stateside term for 'spring rolls', imploring her viewers to weigh in. She also pointed out one key item missing from American Chinese takeaways: "The one thing that we're missing is prawn crackers." James chimed in, remarking on how they didn't receive the customary prawn crackers but instead got complimentary white rice: "They usually just put them in for free but it seems like they've just added some white rice for free. Maybe that's something they do here instead." Despite the lack of prawn crackers, they were pleased to find fortune cookies included. Tasting the egg rolls, Siana immediately noted their resemblance to chunkier spring rolls: "That's a spring roll but thicker." She expressed enjoyment at the heartiness of the roll, finding it "actually really nice." When they delved into the orange chicken, James declared it "really good" with both agreeing it bore a similarity to the sweet and sour chicken back home in UK takeaways. Their verdict on the broccoli beef was less enthusiastic, branding it "average" and somewhat uninspired in flavour. Siana however found its subtlety ="still quite nice." Digging into the chicken fried rice, the pair were unanimous in their approval, with Siana commenting it was "just your typical fried rice" and akin to that served in the UK. To clear up confusion over egg rolls versus spring rolls, The Food Network has differentiated the two on its website, noting that egg rolls are an American invention, while spring rolls have their origins in China. Egg rolls are known for their thicker skin, utilising a "wonton or thick, yeast dough wrapper", in contrast to spring rolls which boast a "more delicate, thin skin and use a spring roll wrapper." When it comes to what's inside, egg rolls are usually packed with "typically contain cabbage and meat", whereas spring rolls tend to be "traditionally vegetarian or vegan", although there are versions that feature meat or seafood.

Two-second trick can show if soy sauce is high quality or not

A cook has shared a simple trick that will tell you if a bottle of soy sauce is of good quality or not – and you don't even need to open it to find out Soy sauce is a staple in many of our kitchens. Its complex, umami-rich profile makes it a staple in various cuisines, especially in East and Southeast Asia. The food product comes in countless different varieties – so which one should you pick up next time you're at the supermarket. To assist, a cook named Paul has revealed his straightforward trick. ‌ On TikTok, he shared: "Quick hack to tell if soy sauce is actually good before you even buy it. I discovered this trick while researching how soy sauce is actually produced - and it's surprisingly simple. ‌ "Just shake the bottle. If bubbles form and linger, that's a positive sign. It indicates more soy beans and excellent fermentation. No foam, that usually means shortcuts." Paul also elaborated in the video's caption, writing: "Cheaper sauces usually watered down and rushed - seen by bubbles that disappear quickly. Good cooking starts with good ingredients." People were very appreciative of the advice and left their thoughts in the comments section. One wrote: "Love this. I've wondered about this for so long." Another shared their own tip, writing: "If you can't pronounce the name of the brand, or if the text on the package is written in more Chinese than English, it's going to be good." Meanwhile, a third added: "Look at the ingredients list. It should preferably only contain soybeans, wheat, water, salt. Sometimes potassium sorbate. Absolutely no caramel colouring and no taste enhancers." ‌ More ways to check soy sauce quality 1. Check the ingredients High-quality soy sauce should contain minimal ingredients. These are typically water, soybeans (or soy concentrate), wheat, and salt. Lower quality products may include added sugars, artificial preservatives, flavour enhancers (like MSG), or caramel colour. Avoid soy sauce labeled as 'hydrolysed vegetable protein' or 'chemical soy sauce,' which is typically cheaper and made artificially. ‌ 2. Fermentation process High-quality soy sauce is made through traditional fermentation, often over several months to years. This process gives the sauce a deep, complex flavour. Low-quality soy sauces are chemically manufactured, which speeds up production at the cost of flavour. Look for the words naturally brewed or traditionally brewed on the label. ‌ 3. Look at the colour and texture Good soy sauce should have a translucent, rich, brownish-red hue and a thin, slightly syrupy texture. It shouldn't be overly dark or watery. 4. Smell it Finally, don't forget the scent of the product. Authentic soy sauce has a balanced, complex aroma that is slightly sweet, malty, and savoury. However, lower quality options may smell overly salty, sharp, or artificial due to additives or chemically-produced ingredients.

It crashed at the end of the runway of the local airport. The aircraft experienced an 'unknown issue' before it crashed into trees. Pictures from the scene show the mangled wreckage with the plane split in two. Six of the 20 people on board were rushed to the hospital. Meanwhile the others on board were treated at the scene, as reported by the NBC affiliate WSMV-TV. Officials revealed no one was killed in the plane crash. Locals were urged to stay clear of the airport in the immediate aftermath of the crash. National Transportation Safety Board investigators and federal aviation chiefs have already launched a probe. A string of plane crashes have already been reported across the US this year. In January, an American Airlines plane carrying 67 people collided with a Black Hawk helicopter before both aircraft plunged into the freezing Potomac River in Washington DC. CLUSTER OF CRASHES All sixty-four people on the passenger plane, including passengers and crew, perished in the crash that left the aviation industry reeling. The crash was America's deadliest air disaster in almost 24 years. Days after the collision over the Potomac, a medical jet crashed and burst into flames in Philadelphia, killing seven people. More than two dozen people were injured and the impact saw rows of homes torched. The plane came down just 30 seconds after takeoff. The plane, carrying a girl who had just undergone surgery, was flying back to Tijuana, Mexico, and was set to stop in Missouri. In April, six people were killed in a plane crash in New York. Top neurologist Michael Groff and his wife urogynecologist Dr. Joy Saini were among the victims. Recent college graduate James Santoro and his girlfriend Karenna Groff were also killed in the tragedy. The couple died just months before they were set to get engaged. Last month, rocker Daniel Williams, best known for starring in the group The Devil Wears Prada, was among six people killed in a plane crash in San Diego. Hours before the crash, he shared a picture that showed him sitting by the controls of a private plane. Talent agent Dave Shapiro was also named among the victims. Kendall Fortner and Emma Lynn Huke, both of whom were booking agents, also died, as did mom Celina Marie Rose Kenyon, 36. Meanwhile, the impact of the plane crash saw eight people injured and 10 homes damaged. 3 Pictures show the aircraft split in half as investigators cordon off the scene of the crash Credit: AFP
