Winger finally OPENS up about Liverpool transfer
That might have been the case with Momodou Lamin Sonko, when he emerged as a candidate to sign for Liverpool back in January 2024.
As exclusively revealed by Anfield Watch, Liverpool have admired Sonko for a long time. They invited him on a trial back in 2017, when he was just 12-years-old.

Many years later in 2024, Liverpool then tried to sign him after his brilliant performances in Hacken but in the end the move never happpened.
Sonko joined Gent, where the Reds have continued to monitor his progress and where the youngster is still honing his skills and ready to explode.
Now though he's focused on representing Sweden at U21 level and ahead of his nation's games this month, he was quizzed about Liverpool's interest.
This time Sonko finally opened up about his potential transfer to the club and even his trial at the Reds.
"The way I look at it is that they were already interested there and I went there and tried it out a bit," the winger told Expressen.

"I felt I was a little too young to move but they have continued to keep an eye on me. The development in Sweden has been good before I moved so it feels quite natural."
Sonko then also opened up about Liverpool's interest in him during the January transfer window in 2024.
"I don't actually know. I was in Hacken and tried not to think too much about sales. Then it happened quite quickly and suddenly I was in Gent. I don't really have a good idea," he said.
And then Sonko also went onto lavish praise on Arne Slot and the club's brilliant season.
"Yes, absolutely incredible. They have been superior in the Premier League. They looked very strong in the Champions League too before they had a tough match at PSG. It has been an incredibly good season. A very good debut season for the coaches too," he said.
Anfield Watch understands Liverpool will continue to monitor Sonko and the Reds might just return for him if he has a breakout season.

England star holding out for Liverpool offer after REJECTING Spurs
Liverpool are facing uncertainty in the centre-back position heading into the off-season. The 2024/25 Premier League champions succeeded in tying down Virgil van Dijk to a new contract - with the captain now set to stay put until 2027. However, elsewhere in the backline, there could be significant disruption in the transfer window. Joe Gomez has suffered a poor campaign on a personal level and could be sold with the club having considered offloading him last summer. Advertisement Jarell Quansah could be sacrificed in order to fund much-needed incomings elsewhere. And perhaps the most worrying situation concerns Ibrahima Konate. With still no breakthrough in contract talks, the French defender could be sold before he leaves on a free in 2026. It all means that Arne Slot and sporting director Richard Hughes could be in the market for a new centre-back this summer. Having seen Dean Huijsen wrap up a move to Real Madrid, the champions will have to look elsewhere for reinforcements. Guehi back on the menu for Liverpool And England international Marc Guehi could be back on the menu if a report in Football Insider is to be believed. Advertisement Tottenham failed with a last-gasp move for the 24-year-old back in January but his Crystal Palace contract expires in 2026. The FA Cup winners have little choice but to sell Guehi this summer and previous reports suggested he could be available for only £40m. The latest report states that Guehi has REJECTED a renewed attempt from Spurs to persuade him and that he is holding out for an offer from a team who consistently challenge for trophies. Newcastle are also expected to follow up on their interest in Guehi, who joined Palace from Chelsea in 2021 for £18m. © IMAGO Newcastle to compete with Liverpool 'Palace boss Oliver Glasner will be powerless to keep Marc Guehi this summer amid interest from the Magpies as well as Liverpool, who are also understood to be at the table,' the report reads. Advertisement 'Newcastle United are expected to make another move for the 24-year-old after four bids were rejected in the summer of 2024.' Guehi is a Premier League-proven international and players of his calibre don't normally come as cheap. If Hughes and Slot are planning to safeguard against depletion in the backline, they could do a lot worse than adding the Eagles' captain.

Luis Diaz keen on Barcelona move, rejects Liverpool contract offer
Barcelona have been handed a massive boost as forward Luis Diaz has rejected a contract offer from Liverpool (h/t Mundo Deportivo). Diaz has emerged as a top target for the La Liga champions in the summer transfer window, with sporting director Deco a huge admirer of his talent. Advertisement The Reds have been in talks to extend Diaz's contract, which expires in 2027, but his agent has informed them about his desire to join the Catalan giants. The Colombian international has also turned down a lucrative proposal from Al-Nassr. The Premier League champions are also open to selling the former Porto star. They value him at around €80 million as they aim to generate funds to sign Florian Wirtz. Despite their financial woes, Barca are unfazed by the price tag as they believe Diaz's efforts to force his departure will provide more leeway in negotiations. The 28-year-old has been an integral part of Liverpool since joining them in 2022, tallying 41 goals and 23 assists in 148 appearances. Advertisement He also played a key role in the Premier League triumph under Arne Slot last season, bagging 13 goals and seven assists. With Ansu Fati on his way to AS Monaco, Barca manager Hansi Flick wants to add depth to their attack ahead of next season. Díaz is known for his explosiveness on both flanks, particularly through his dribbling and ball progression. He can also play as a focal point in the attack. Barca have also lined up Marcus Rashford as a potential alternative to improve their attack in the transfer window. The Manchester United forward, who recently enjoyed a productive loan spell at Aston Villa, is open to taking a pay cut to join Barca.

From Dembélé to Salah: six contenders in an open race for men's Ballon d'Or
Mohamed Salah (Liverpool) George Weah remains the only African to win the prize and the Liverpool forward's form in the past year has put him in a similar bracket to the Liberian. 'The Egyptian King' scored 29 goals and assisted a further 18 to lead the Reds to the Premier League title, but he could not take them further than the last 16 in the Champions League. Arne Slot played Salah in every league match, a sign of his importance and his stupendous fitness. 'He's had very, very, very good seasons at Liverpool but this one probably stands out in terms of numbers,' Arne Slot said of Salah's Ballon d'Or chances. 'If there's ever a chance for him, it would be this season. If not, then he's going to try to push even harder next season'. Turning 33 in mid-June, this might be Salah's final chance to achieve the highest personal accolade in the game, even if his head coach thinks otherwise. Ousmane Dembélé (Paris Saint-Germain) Finally, at 28, the forward is fulfilling his promise and filling his mantelpiece with shiny trinkets in the process. Dembélé's career was on the slide when he moved to Paris Saint-Germain from Barcelona in 2023, but back in France he has looked more comfortable. Luis Enrique, a former Barcelona manager, is getting the best out of him, even after dropping the France international for disciplinary reasons in October. His pace and skill have traumatised defenders alongside that of Désiré Doué – this year's vote might come too early for the talented teenager – across the continent and helped PSG secure a historic first Champions League triumph to complete the treble. Dembélé makes beating defenders look easy, scoring 21 goals in 29 Ligue 1 appearances in the process. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (Paris Saint-Germain) Having started the season in Naples, the Georgian can boast the rare feat of winning two domestic titles – Serie A and Ligue 1 – in the same year. Oh and he lifted the Champions League. Not bad for a lad who used to play for Rustavi. Everyone has known about Kvaratskhelia's qualities for a long time; that ability to breeze past players, going left and right, while possessing a vicious strike to test the fingers of any goalkeeper. The son of a former international – although his father Badri played for Azerbaijan – Kvaratskhelia's path to stardom may not have taken the most direct route. The 24-year-old played three seasons in Russia before Napoli came calling. Kvaratskhelia made a difference when it mattered for PSG in Europe, taking them to the extra level they struggled to find in the league stage. Raphinha (Barcelona) Remember that bloke who once saved Leeds from relegation? Well, he is now a serious contender for the Ballon d'Or, which is an especially strange thing to consider given 12 months ago Barcelona would have quite happily waved the Brazilian off into the sunset in the hope of getting some much-needed cash. Hansi Flick always wanted Raphinha to stay because he appreciated the 28-year-old's qualities. and he has become an influential on-pitch figure at Barcelona. A goal every other league game - and 34 in all competitions - was a key reason behind Barça becoming La Liga champions for a 28th time, as well as reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League. And Raphinha, used predominantly on the left-wing, will for ever be a hero in Barcelona after scoring two goals in last month's 4-3 clásico win over Real Madrid. Lamine Yamal (Barcelona) There are few guarantees in life but if Lamine Yamal does not win the Ballon d'Or this year then he will definitely do so in the future, and almost certainly many times. The 17-year-old is a generational talent, already laden with medals and personal awards. Last summer it was the European Championship; this season the Copa del Rey and La Liga. 'He has no ceiling,' Raphinha said of his teammate. 'He can go as far as he wants. It all depends on him. He has quality, commitment and works hard.' No one wants to play against the prodigy who has a knack for cutting in from the right and finding the top corner, leaving a trail of shellshocked defenders in his wake. Kylian Mbappé (Real Madrid) Currently listed at 50/1 by some bookmakers, Mbappé retains plenty of admirers. The Frenchman came sixth at the ceremony last year and none of those who finished above him are in contention this time. Admittedly, his first year at Real Madrid can be classed as forgettable. Mbappé won the Super Cup and Intercontinental Cup but losing out to Barcelona in La Liga and being brushed aside by Arsenal in the Champions League does not do much for egos in the Spanish capital. The goals flew in for Mbappé, with the 26-year-old scoring 31 times in 34 league appearances, but when it mattered in Europe, he did not produce what was required.
