The motorcyclist that was seriously injured following a collision at a Dublin speed checkpoint last month has died in hospital.
Izzet Can Berber was seriously injured in the collision on the R132 at Lissenhall near Swords on May 11th. Garda Kevin Flatley became the 90th officer to die on duty in Ireland after he was struck by the motorcyclist during the collision.
Mr Berber had remained in a critical condition in Beaumont Hospital since the crash but died on Saturday night. In a statement to Dublin Live this morning, his wife Caitriona said: "He passed away peacefully holding my hand on Saturday night. He was an amazing husband and even more amazing father to his son and two stepchildren.
"And we are internally grateful to all our friends and family for the support over the last three weeks and also want to thank the doctors and nurses in ICU who did everything in their power to save him and support our family though his time there."
A garda spokesperson said this morning: "The motorcyclist (a man aged in his 30's) involved in a fatal road traffic collision on the R132 at Lissenhall near Swords, North Dublin, on Sunday, 11th May 2025, was pronounced deceased at Beaumont Hospital yesterday evening, Saturday 31st May 2025.
"Garda Family Liaison Officers are providing ongoing support and information to both families involved. Investigations are ongoing."
Garda Flatley's funeral mass took place in Balbriggan on May 16th, followed by burial in Newcastle. The officer had 26 years experience on the force.
The Church of St Peter and Paul was full and more than 1,000 people viewed the funeral mass on giant screens outside – including hundreds of fellow gardai from all over the country.

Evan Fitzgerald: Carlow gunman was due in court to face 13 firearms and explosives charges
A man who opened fire in a busy Carlow shopping centre before fatally wounding himself was due to appear in court on Wednesday to face 13 firearms and explosives charges after being arrested last year. Gardaí believe Evan Fitzgerald (22) of Portrushen, Kiltegan, Carlow, who died at Fairgreen Shopping Centre in Carlow town on Sunday evening, was very fearful of going to prison. Though he was described by sources as posing a danger, due to his obsession with guns, he was also regarded as vulnerable. Assistant Commissioner Paula Hilman said what 'was meant to be a normal day out on a bank holiday weekend' had become a 'terrifying experience for every person that was present' at the shopping centre. READ MORE Mr Fitzgerald walked around the shopping centre discharging shots before fatally wounding himself. However, he fired into the air and did not attempt to shoot at anyone else, gardaí said. As shoppers fled from the centre, at about 6.15pm, gardaí received 999 calls alerting them to the fact shots were being fired. Uniformed gardaí were first to arrive and saw people fleeing the building before Mr Fitzgerald exited. They were followed quickly by armed detectives, who identified themselves to the gunman and drew their weapons. However, a further shot was then discharged from Mr Fitzgerald's shotgun, fatally wounding him. Garda Headquarters confirmed no shots were discharged by any of the gardaí present. Mr Fitzgerald was arrested in Co Kildare last year as part of an investigation by the Garda Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau into the purchase of guns on the dark net. He made full admissions and had been on bail awaiting trial. The operation last year resulting in the seizure of the two guns – a G3 Heckler & Koch machine gun and a Remington M1911 handgun – also involved the armed Emergency Response Unit. Gardaí believed Mr Fitzgerald and, allegedly, a number of associates had sourced the guns for recreational purposes, including shooting targets in the woods, rather than being involved in organised crime.

Only 60 of 4,800 dangerous driving reports to online Traffic Watch system result in a fine
Only a small percentage of the thousands of reports to the garda online Traffic Watch system result in fines being issued to drivers. The online Traffic Watch system has received 4,885 reports of dangerous driving in the first nine months of operation, but just 60 Fixed Charge Notices have been issued to drivers so far on the back of the reports. The online system, which allows members of the public to report dangerous driving, replaced the Traffic Watch phoneline which operated for 10 years. On the back of the 4,885 reports, 60 Fixed Charge Notices have been issued, of which 30 have resulted in the payment of a fine so far. The statistics were released to Social Democrats TD Liam Quaide who said it raises concerns that such a small fraction of fines emanated from a large volume of incidents reported through the online system. "It would be important to know how resourced this system is to carry out its work, given the wider failure of successive governments to adequately staff the Gardaí," said Mr Quaide. Once received, the online reports are logged by garda staff at the Garda Information Services Centre (GISC) who then forward the reports to the superintendent in the relevant area to progress. A member of An Garda Síochána is then appointed to investigate the complaint, contacting the person who submitted the report to ascertain what occurred, whether there were any other witnesses and to take a written statement. Photographs and videos of incidents cannot be uploaded as part of the initial complaint but can be handed over to the investigating garda. If it is believed an offence has been committed following the investigation, a file is submitted to the superintendent who will decide what, if any action, is to be taken. Traffic Watch has been hailed as a very important tool by Gardaí as it "empowers responsible road users to work with An Garda Síochána in enhancing road safety for all". "Traffic watch has been important over the years in providing an opportunity where responsible and safe road users can report aggressive and careless drivers," garda assistant commissioner Paula Hilman previously said. The system is designed to address inappropriate and dangerous driving behaviour that occurs on the roads but does not lead to an immediate emergency situation, such as illegal parking, tailgating, or use of a phone while driving. Reports made are not anonymous and complainants are required to provide contact details and can potentially be called to give evidence in court. Bank holiday weekend operation Meanwhile, gardaí were out on roads across the country as part of a bank holiday roads policing operation which saw 1,030 drivers caught speeding in the first two days. Among those were a driver in Midleton, Cork, who was detected doing 151km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N25; another in Belturbet, Cavan, driving at 143km/h in a 100km/h zone; and one driving at 103km/h in a 60km/h zone in Ballaghadereen, Roscommon. The first 48 hours of the operation also saw 54 people arrested on suspicion of intoxicated driving while fines were also issued to drivers using their mobile phones and for seatbelt offences.
