Meet actress who was launched by Raj Kapoor, became star after debut, was thrown out from film after 10 days of shoot.., her name is...
In the glamorous world of showbiz, where success is always fleeting, many come here with dreams and aspirations of making it big on the silver screen. However, when the curtain falls, a lot more happens behind the scenes that meets the eye. Just like many aspiring actors, many people come here with the dream of being discovered by a filmmaker, launched as a lead, and get overnight fame. However, stardom often arrives like a whirlwind, it doesn't sustain for long. The same world that can launch you as an overnight star can also throw you off as a nobody the next day; this is the bitter-sweet truth of this industry.
One such tale is of an actress, none other than Mandakini. Discovered by the legendary filmmaker Raj Kapoor, this actress entered the industry when she was 16 and took everyone by storm with her debut in the blockbuster 'Ram Teri Ganga Maili Ho Gayi'. Starring opposite Rajiv Kapoor, this actress grabbed a lot of eyeballs for her beauty, screen presence, and her impeccable acting skills. She was hailed as the next big thing, but little did we know that soon she would be pulled out of films last minute.
Entering the industry in 80s, at a time when Poonam Dhillon, Meenakshi Sheshadri, and many other hit actresses were dominating the industry, Mandakini came and became an overnight sensation. It was the blend of Meenakshi's innocence and bold scene that captivated the audience and made her receive offers back to back.
However, despite the initial success, her career was not so smooth sailing. During her appearance on the Kapil Sharma show, she spoke about how she faced challenges at the peak of her career. She revealed that while she was at the top of her career, she used to get offers for films, but she would be pulled out of it last minute, and sometimes she would receive an advance for her roles, but then, due to some other reason, the film would be stopped. She shared that once she shot for 10 days and the film got called off without warning, even the makers didn't have any heads up.
Born as Yamin Josephin in Meerut, Mandakini was born in a mixed heritage; her father was British, while her mother was Kashmiri. Mandakini got married to a former Buddhist monk, Dr. Kagyur T. Rinpoche Thakur, and embraced Buddhism. . The couple has a son named Rabbil and a daughter Rabze Innaya. Making her debut with Raj Kapoor's Ram Teri Ganga Maili Ho Gayi, Raj Kapoor not only gave her her career's first film but also her stage name – Mandakini.
While even today 'Ram Teri Ganga Maili Ho Gayi' remains her most famous work, later Mandakini also worked in superhits like Om, Jeeva, Aag aur Shola, Apne Apne, Loha, Dance Dance, Hawalaat, Pyar Mohabbat to Jordaar.
