4 accused in student gang-rape case minors, say cops, plan to try them as adults
Berhampur/Bhubaneswar: Four of the 10 suspected to be involved in the alleged gang-rape of a college student on Gopalpur beach on Sunday are minors, police revealed on Tuesday, adding that they plan to prosecute the 17-year-olds as adults.

"Considering the gravity and heinous nature of the crime, we will pray to the Juvenile Justice Board to prosecute the four minors as adults under the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015," Berhampur SP, Saravana Vivek M, said following the arrest of all accused on Tuesday. The adult accused have been identified as Pramod Nayak (23), Baburam Dalai (19), Laxmana Pradhan (24), Kunal Pradhan (24), Deepak Tarain (19) and Om Pradhan (19), all residents of Ganjam district.
The survivor, aged 20, hails from another district.
During Raja festival, the student had gone to the beach with her male friend and was sitting in a secluded, dark stretch when they were attacked by the men.
"Investigation showed three of the adults accused sexually assaulted her while others aided them by attacking and overpowering the girl and her friend," Saravana said. The incident has sparked widespread condemnation with CM Mohan Charan Majhi directing police to take exemplary action against those involved in the gang-rape.
"Such acts are highly deplorable and a crime against humanity. No perpetrator involved in this incident will be spared. The harshest punishment permitted by law will be enforced," the CM's office said in a statement.
According to the police, the accused were already present on the beach when the victims arrived around 6.30 pm. Between 8 and 9 pm, they overpowered the male companion and dragged the woman about 50 feet away before assaulting her sexually, police said.

"Post-assault, the perpetrators extorted some money through cash and UPI transactions from the girl and her friend," the SP said. They left around 10 pm, threatening the duo with severe consequences if they went to the police.
According to police sources, Pramod, the prime accused, has a criminal history. A BTech dropout, he is an employee at an electronics factory near Bengaluru, and had been previously arrested in an attempt to murder case.
"Besides the attempt to murder case, he was also booked in a bomb making case under Purusottampur police station area a few years back," Saravana said.
Police said Pramod had recently returned home on holiday break. On the occasion of Raja festival, he and his friends had gone to the beach.

Three men, all vendors at Sarojini Nagar market in south Delhi, were arrested on Tuesday and booked under various provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act and the Juvenile Justice Act after two disturbing videos emerged of them assaulting, stripping, and threatening a nine-year-old boy at the market on Sunday. The assault occurred on Sunday after the vendors allegedly suspected the boy, a Class 3 student and a native of Nepal, of petty thefts in the market, police said. The incident came to light after two videos—reportedly recorded by the accused themselves—were widely circulated on WhatsApp. The accused—identified as Pankaj Kumar, Pradeep Kumar, and Vishal Singh—were booked under Section 12 (sexual harassment) of Pocso Act, Section 75 (cruelty to children) JJ Act, and various criminal charges, including assault and wrongful confinement. In the first video, one of the men is seen forcibly unzipping the boy's pants while another films the act. The child, stripped of his shirt, is heard crying and pleading as the accused hurl abuses and attempt to remove his trousers. One of them is heard saying, 'Show me your underwear,' while another pours a liquid into the boy's pants. The second clip shows the boy being shoved into a car, where one of the assailants slams his head against the steering wheel, triggering the horn. A voice in the background taunts, 'He will die inside the car because of the summer.' Another threatens, 'I will kill you.' Deputy commissioner of police (southwest) Amit Goel confirmed that the videos were brought to their attention through WhatsApp. 'We identified the victim, a nine-year-old boy whose mother works as a cook in the market. Ex-minister's son stopped at airport; arrested for cheating sister of ₹17cr
Chennai: Former AIADMK minister Shanmuganathan's son, Raja Shanmuganathan, who is also a councillor in Tuticorin, was intercepted and arrested at Chennai airport in connection with a ₹17 crore cheating case, moments before boarding a flight to Malaysia. A lookout circular was pending against Raja Shanmuganathan. He is AIADMK's 59th ward councillor and Thoothukudi Corporation's opposition leader, and faces a case of for cheating his sister of ₹17 crore by misusing her property under the pretext of offering company shares. In her complaint, Ponnarasi Ashokkumar, 38, said her brother Raja and his wife Anusha lured her into investing in their company, Omeena Pharma Distributors Pvt Ltd, by promising her 16% equity. To facilitate this, they mortgaged securities and bonds belonging to her late husband, and pledged her two-acre land in Sriperumbudur. Using these assets, they secured a loan of ₹11 crore in the name of the company, which was later diverted to another company — Ashun Exim — owned by Raja. Raja also made Ponnarasi to invest in a quarry business named Golden Blue Metals Pvt Ltd in Thoothukudi. She allegedly handed over 300 sovereigns of gold jewellery, which Raja pledged to raise funds. Using these funds, he reportedly purchased around 40 acres of land in Thoothukudi, and registered it in his own name. Investigations revealed that instead of honouring the agreement to share profits or provide equity, Raja and Anusha forged documents to illegally transfer the company's shares to Raja. They fabricated a resignation letter in Ponnarasi's name and uploaded it to the Registrar of Companies (ROC), removing her from her position as director of Golden Blue Metals Pvt Ltd and appointing Anusha in her place. Based on Ponnarasi's complaint, the central crime branch registered a case and began investigations. Police also issued a Look Out Circular (LOC) against Raja. Raja was intercepted at the Chennai International Airport On June 10 and was taken into custody for inquiry. He was subsequently arrested and remanded in judicial custody.

Delhi: How govt employee duped colleague of Rs 24 lakh — splurged on 2 iPhones, motorcycle, laptop
A routine visit to the bank turned into a nightmare for Surender Kumar, posted as the chief household assistant in the President's Estate. The 59-year-old, who is nearing retirement, was getting his passbook updated when he noticed several large transactions on his and his wife's accounts. When he asked the bank for clarity, he was told that the transactions were all done through a UPI app. But Kumar had never installed a UPI app on his phone. Kumar subsequently lodged a complaint, and police said they registered a case under Section 318(4) (cheating) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. It later turned out his own colleague was stealing from him — a total of Rs 24 lakh — said police. According to police, the financial trail revealed that Rs 16.05 lakh from Kumar's wife's account had been transferred to the account of a man in Kolkata. Rs 4 lakh from Kumar's account had been sent to the same man's account as well, but the latter had transferred the amount to another account, said police. Police traced the account holder and arrested the culprit. 'The police team apprehended the man from Kolkata. During questioning, he admitted to receiving the fraudulent money on behalf of his associate, Prakash Singh, in exchange for a 2-3% commission. Based on his disclosure and technical surveillance, Prakash Singh was identified and arrested,' said DCP (New Delhi) Devesh Kumar Mahla. It turned out that Singh was working in the same department as the victim and often had access to Kumar's phone, said police. Exploiting the fact that his colleague was not technologically adept, Singh installed a UPI app on Kumar's phone and allegedly transferred the amount. Singh would allegedly transfer Rs 1 lakh each time, every three to four days, said police, and would delete the transaction alert messages and the app before returning the phone to Kumar. Singh then used the money to buy himself two iPhones, a motorcycle, a laptop and a myriad other household items. He also spent Rs 2.25 lakh on online games on his phone, and even used some of the money to travel. He spent the remainder to pay off debts he owed to his friends and colleagues, said police. Police could recover only Rs 2.25 lakh of the stolen amount. The police have advised senior citizens unfamiliar with digital banking to exercise caution while using smartphones and financial apps. Additionally, citizens are advised to never share their phones, banking credentials or OTPs with anyone, including colleagues or acquaintances, and to regularly monitor bank statements and SMS alerts.
