UAE hits highest May temperature on record at 50.4C
The United Arab Emirates recorded on Friday its highest temperature for May since it began documenting them in 2003 at a sweltering 50.4 degrees Celsius, according to the National Center of Meteorology.
"The highest temperature recorded over the country today is 50.4°C in Al Shawamekh (Abu Dhabi) at 14:30 UAE Local time," it said in a post on X.
"This is the highest temperature we've ever recorded (for May) since we started keeping records in 2003," the NCM told AFP.
That topped the highest temperature of 50.2 Celsius recorded in May 2009, said the centre.
The UAE is one of the world's top oil exporters, but has also invested heavily in renewable energy.

Scattered showers may also fall on parts of the governorates of Saada, Amran, Hajjah, Mahwit, and the highlands of Lahj and Abyan. Rainfall over the past 24 hours, measured at meteorological stations, reached 25 mm in Ibb and 2 mm in Taiz. The center warned citizens of the hot and extremely hot weather and advised them to avoid direct sunlight during the afternoon and to drink plenty of fluids. Seafarers, fishermen, and ship captains were also warned of high seas and rough waves at the entrance to Bab al-Mandab, the southern coast, and around the Socotra Archipelago. The center stated in its weather bulletin that hot to very hot and dry weather is expected in the deserts and coastal plains, with maximum temperatures ranging between 38 and 46 degrees Celsius. It will be hot and humid along the coasts, with maximum temperatures ranging between 34 and 39 degrees Celsius. Rain of varying intensity, sometimes accompanied by thunder, is likely in the governorates of Al Dhale'e, Taiz, Ibb, Sa'dah, and the highlands of Abyan and Lahj.
