
Geologists unveil UK ‘super regions' with best potential for transition projects
Geologists have unveiled 'super regions' throughout the UK with the best geological potential to host energy transition technologies, including geothermal energy, and carbon capture and storage (CCS).
The findings, published by the British Geological Survey (BGS), show the UK has an incredibly diverse subsurface, which can play a key role in supporting efforts to reach the country's legally binding climate goals.
Many areas have geology that is well suited to certain net zero technologies, including shallow geothermal installations or critical minerals occurrences.
But BGS scientists say eight super regions contain subsurface formations and conditions that are favourable to multiple different technologies within a relatively small area.
These are Northern Ireland, the Scottish Central Belt, north-east England, north-west England, the South Yorkshire and Humber region, the East Midlands and East Anglia, South Wales and south-west England.
Here, the subsurfaces can provide a sustainable heat source for geothermal energy, geological formations for secure storage of energy and carbon dioxide (CO2), rocks containing important resources for mineral extraction, and suitable geological foundation conditions for onshore and offshore wind infrastructure projects, the scientists said.
For example, south-west England has significant deep geothermal resources offering opportunities for sustainable heat and power generation while its sedimentary basins provide potential sites for CCS and energy storage, they added.
Meanwhile, the Scottish Central Belt boasts a complex geology, including sedimentary reservoir rocks and significant igneous intrusions, abundant geothermal resources, abandoned coal mines and a legacy of subsurface data, they said.
The BGS said its findings offer crucial insights and a road map for decision makers, ministers and land managers looking to maximise return on investment in the energy transition.
The geologists assessed that strategic spatial planning for such technologies in these areas can help unlock an estimated £40 billion of annual investment and support the Government's target of creating 650,000 jobs through renewable energy by 2030.
But they added that further investigation will be required to fully establish each of the super region's true potential, ensure safe deployment of each technology, and understand environmental impact.
Michelle Bentham, BGS chief scientist for decarbonisation and resource management, said: 'The UK is incredibly diverse in its geology.
'Because it's out of sight, geology gets a little bit forgotten about.
'And I don't think people realise how blessed we are in the UK, if you like, in terms of the geology that could really help us have a sustainable future.
'But you can really see the difference that geology could make to reaching Government goals in terms of net zero, energy provision, clean energy.'
Ms Bentham said funding and the policy landscape may have been barriers to rolling out technologies such as CCS and geothermal energy across the UK.
'In Europe, geothermal energy is used much more widely. In the UK, we don't use it as widely and it's always been a bit of a Cinderella of clean energy technologies,' she said.
'And in the North Sea, we could potentially become a hub for carbon storage in Europe for countries that don't have the right geology who are trying to decarbonise,' she added.
The BGS contributed to the consultation on the Government's upcoming land use framework, which looks at how England's finite land can meet the escalating demands of food security, clean energy, nature restoration and new homes.
But the framework is focusing more on surface demands, with some scope for shallow subsurface areas such as geothermal infrastructure.
Ms Bentham said strategic spatial planning for the subsurface could also help optimise the UK's resources for the energy transition.
For example, it could stop decision makers from locking into one technology – such as wind farms or CCS – in one area where another could have yielded more benefits, or where multiple technologies could have been deployed.
'Like the map, it's not one technology that's going to be the answer,' she said.
'That's why we need this combination to give us flexibility.'
The BGS highlighted that the data underpinning its research has been shaped by geologists' current understanding of the subsurface, adding that a few parts of the country have been less extensively surveyed than others, and more research is required to fully assess their potential.

Rate of women being hired into top jobs falls for third year running
The rate of women being hired into UK leadership roles has fallen for the third year in a row, with increasing barriers to top jobs as they advance through their careers, according to figures from LinkedIn. The professional networking site revealed that women were hired into just more than a third – 36.8% – of leadership positions in the year to March 1, down 2.1% year-on-year. This has left the rate of female hires into senior roles back where it was in 2020, according to the figures. The data also showed that while more UK women are now in top management roles than they were in 2019 – at 30.9% last year versus 27.6% in 2019 – the progress has slowed significantly in the past two years, rising by just 0.3 percentage points. The figures suggest it becomes more difficult for older generations to reach senior management, with 19.4% of so-called baby boomers – those born between 1946 and 1964 – in these roles compared with 28.9% for gen X, 36.7% for millennials and 39.3% for gen Z. The statistics, compiled by analysing the group's 43 million-strong membership base across the UK, also show that, as of March, women made up 45.8% of hires in the UK, down 4.6% year-on-year. Globally, the figures paint a similar picture, revealing that less than a third of senior leadership roles are held by women (30.9%) despite making up almost half (43.2%) of the worldwide workforce. This 'drop to the top' is most pronounced in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (Stem) sector, where only around one in eight (12%) of leadership positions are held by women, according to LinkedIn. It is calling for the Government and businesses to promote hiring based on skills rather than qualifications to help ensure women do not get left behind, in particular amid the shift towards artificial intelligence (AI). Janine Chamberlin, head of LinkedIn UK, said: 'Just as AI is reshaping the workplace and demanding more adaptable, collaborative leadership, we're seeing women's progress into senior roles stall for the third year running. 'Women are 20% more likely to have that multi-domain experience, working across different industries and functions, which creates exactly the kind of flexible, agile leaders businesses need for AI transformation. 'Yet we're locking them out of leadership precisely when we need those skills most.' The online giant believes that a skills-based approach to hiring – through prioritising skills over qualifications in recruitment – could broaden the talent pool for women by 6.3 times globally.

A mighty industry may grow from Acorn project after UK Government backing
There's an old saying that 'mighty oaks from little acorns grow'. For years now, backers of a carbon capture and storage (CCUS) site in Scotland believe a mighty industry is set to grow from the Acorn project in the north east of Scotland. The site would take emissions from industrial sites in Scotland and elsewhere in the UK and store them under the North Sea, to reduce the amount of CO2 released into the atmosphere. On Wednesday, after years of 'will it, won't it', the UK Government finally gave its backing to the project at the site of the gas terminal at St Fergus in Aberdeenshire. As part of the spending review by the chancellor, Acorn, along with another site in England known as Viking, will now be given the green light. However, exactly how much Acorn will get is still to be revealed. The UK Government does say it will provide £9.4bn of funding for CCUS over the course of this parliament. That money though looks like it will mainly go to helping advance two sites already given the go-ahead in England. Acorn will get 'development funding to advance their delivery' according to the Treasury. Crucially too, as is often the case, Treasury documents also say about Acorn, 'A final investment decision will be taken later this Parliament, subject to project readiness and affordability.' The Acorn project will take the greenhouse gases created through industrial processes. Repurposed pipelines and ships will take CO2 from places like Grangemouth to the Acorn site in the north east of Scotland. From there, the CO2 will then be transported by old pipelines around 100km offshore and stored around 2.5km under the seabed. The CO2 is stored below a seal of rocks to prevent the emissions from escaping. The project has become something of a political football. The Scottish Government has long called for the UK Government to give its full backing to Acorn. It has previously said it would support the site and the wider 'Scottish Cluster', which includes Grangemouth with funding, but wanted the UK Government to back it too. Acorn previously failed to get full backing from the Government, in what was known as 'Track-1' status. It was instead given 'reserve status'. Two sites in England were given the go-ahead instead and in October last year the UK Government said it would back those projects with nearly £22bn of funding over the next 25 years. In response to the announcement, the SNP have accused 'successive Westminster governments' of dragging 'their heels on Acorn.' The 'Scottish Cluster' includes Grangemouth, where of course there have been hundreds of job losses. It's unclear what that means for the scale of the Acorn project. Those behind Acorn though are pleased that finally they've been given UK Government support. Aberdeen and Grampian Chamber of Commerce today said Acorn can, 'Unlock £7bn in private investment, to protect and create thousands of high value jobs, and to support our supply chain through the transition.' However, environmental campaigners have accused CCUS of 'greenwashing'. Friends of the Earth Scotland say Acorn is 'a fossil fuel polluters pipe dream and will never live up to the hype'. Either way, Wednesday's news has been a long time in the making. There has been talk about Carbon Capture and Storage in Scotland for well over a decade. The announcement today may take it one step closer, but it is far from a done deal yet. Major US climate website likely to be shut down after almost all staff fired
A major US government website supporting public education on climate science looks likely to be shuttered after almost all of its staff were fired, the Guardian has learned. the gateway website for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (Noaa)'s Climate Program Office, will imminently no longer publish new content, according to multiple former staff responsible for the site's content whose contracts were recently terminated. 'The entire content production staff at (including me) were let go from our government contract on 31 May,' said a former government contractor who wished to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation. 'We were told that our positions within the contract were being eliminated.' Rebecca Lindsey, the website's former program manager, who was fired in February as part of the government's purge of probationary employees, described a months-long situation within Noaa where political appointees and career staff argued over the fate of the website. 'I had gotten a stellar performance review, gotten a bonus, gotten a raise. I was performing very well. And then I was part of that group who got the form letter saying, 'Your knowledge, skills, and abilities are no longer of use to Noaa' – or something to that effect.' Lindsey said she had been worried that might be a target of the new administration soon after the election, but when a large Noaa contract was up for renewal at the end of May, her former boss told her that a demand came 'from above' to rewrite parts of the contract to remove the team's funding. 'It was a very deliberate, targeted attack,' said Lindsey. Lindsey said the content for was created and maintained by a contracted staff of about 10, with additional contributions from Noaa scientists, and its editorial content was specifically designed to be politically neutral, and faithful to the current state of the sciences. All of those staff have now been dismissed, she said. 'We operated exactly how you would want an independent, nonpartisan communications group to operate,' said Lindsey, and noted that is housed within the science division of Noaa, not its public affairs division. 'It does seem to be part of this sort of slow and quiet way of trying to keep science agencies from providing information to the American public about climate.' Noaa has been contacted for comment. It's unclear whether the website will remain visible to the public. The site was housed within the Communication, Education, and Engagement Division of Noaa, which describes itself as 'the largest team in the federal government dedicated to climate communication, education, and engagement'. The website receives hundreds of thousands of visits per month and is one of the most popular sources of information about climate science on the internet. The fired staff believe the changes to were targeted by political appointees within the Trump administration and specifically aimed at restricting public-facing climate information. 'It's targeted, I think it's clear,' said Tom Di Liberto, a former Noaa spokesperson who was also fired from his position earlier this year. 'They only fired a handful of people, and it just so happened to be the entire content team for I mean, that's a clear signal.' The purge spared two web developers, which Di Liberto says is a concerning sign. The contractor said: 'My bigger worry, long-term, is I would hate to see it turn into a propaganda website for this administration, because that's not at all what it was.' The contractor said that while there will still be some pre-written, scheduled content posted on the site this month, there are no plans for further new content: 'After that, we have no idea what will happen to the website.' Lindsey said she also fears a 'sinister possibility' that the administration may co-opt to publish its own anti-science content. Lindsey said the administration could now 'provide a content team from the Heartland Institute, leveraging our audience, our brand, our millions of people that we reach on social media every month. That's the worst-case scenario.' ' is one heck of a URL. If you wanted to basically keep the website alive to do something with later, this is what you would do if you're the [Trump] administration,' said Di Liberto. 'It's clear that the administration does not accept climate science, so it's certainly concerning.' The cuts also mean that there is now also no one left to run social media accounts, which have hundreds of thousands of followers. Since staff in charge of did a lot of pushback on misinformation, their absence may help anti-science information flourish there more readily. 'We were an extremely well-trusted source for climate information, misinformation and disinformation because we actually, legitimately would answer misinformation questions,' said the contractor. 'We'd answer reader emails and try to combat disinformation on social media. 'We get attacked on social media by people who don't believe in climate change, and that's increased over the last six months or so as well.' The shutdown comes amid broader cuts to science funding across the government, including 'significant reductions to education, grants, research, and climate-related programs within Noaa', as stated in the 2026 'passback' budget Congress is currently deliberating. 'It seems like if they can't get rid of all the research, what they can do is make it impossible for anyone to know about it,' said Di Liberto. The contractor said they worry that what may have begun as a heavy-handed attempt by administration officials to limit public knowledge of human-caused climate change will have broader impacts on public education on the cyclical drivers of weather – as well as the results of publicly funded research conducted by Noaa scientists. 'To me, climate is more broad than just climate change. It's also climate patterns like El Niño and La Niña. Halting factual climate information is a disservice to the public. Hiding the impacts of climate change won't stop it from happening, it will just make us far less prepared when it does.'
